All of my pet-friendly-friends know how hard it is to outlive our pets, every single time. I wasn't quite prepared on dealing with the grief of a six year old. Anger, sadness, disbelief, astonishment: "How can he die? Why do we have to die? Why can't God send him back down to be with US? He wasn't even OLD. My best friend never got to see him. I want to die so I can go see him." Tears. And kids aren't supposed to see mommy and daddy cry, but come on, who are we kidding. No more laps on heads, no more throwing a huge paw on your leg to ask for attention, no more eviscerated stuffed toys, no more squeaky balls, no more watch wear you step, no more "get em Tomus" when barks at an outside cat who dared step on our porch were necessary, no more drool to avoid after water drinkage, no more bear hugs and belly rubs and dancing and ball tossing and treat giving and brushing and soft ear rubbing and soulful eye gazing.
Until the next one. Who will not be a replacement, of course, but just another dog. Just another bit of unselfish life that will make our hearts grow a bit more. Just another companion who will give us whatever we ask, with a wag of a tail to boot. Just another happy life that will always be happy to see you, will always be happy and welcoming of our love. You know- just a dog."Sun sets on this ocean- never once on my devotion."

How Dog Owners See the World...The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

I can hear in your words you know you are the lucky ones to have known and loved Tomus,
a forever love.
We lost two at five years old, five years apart. Thought we were jinxed. Thought it was so unfair.
Thought our children suffered so much without a good enough reason.
Looking back now, 15 + years later, I see my children and how those losses have made
them who they are. Helped my boy rescue an old bulldog and give her a great final five years,
bravely, then say goodbye. For all the pain, good comes as we move forward.
Dogs and the plan they are in our lives is divine for me.
The love we learn from them a lesson in unconditional. And they are just the besets friends ever
and forever missed.0 -
