Newspaper Sparks Outrage For Publishing Names Of Gun Owners

Was this the right thing to do? I have to say IF I was a gun owner I wouldn't want my name published for ALL to see.

What is your thoughts on this issue?

  • I support privacy..seems not cool things to do..i don't know if its even legal someone put your info out to public..
but,im thinking, maybe its good for them, cos criminals now know where are the house with guns and will afraid to go in those house ,cos the good guys with the gun, will shoot them cos they will protect their property and life..
and don't tell me that those bad guys will get into those houses to steal the guns..
we all know that all are responsible guns owners and the guns are safe and locked and no one can find them!!!

  • I like how CNN has followed suit by providing the same map to an even wider audience. I don't think that anybody should have their names published like this. It also bothers me that the media seem to believe they are above reproach when it comes to publishing a list like this. There is absolutely no respect for privacy anymore.

this is public information correct? what is the outrage over? the gun owners didnt do anything wrong so what are they worried about? to me its similar to the government eavesdropping on our telephone calls, texts and emails, TSA body scanner images and etc. If your not doing anything wrong whats the issue?

I have a different take on this. I don't think think it's much of an issue for the gun owners as it's public record.

For the NON GUN OWNERS, this map gives criminals targets where they can be pretty sure there aren't guns.

Also if I were a person looking to move I would want to be smack in the middle of the Law abiding gun owners...
Pondering if this could make property value go up or down?

What's next, outing the gays? After that let's out the Jews. Then lets go after those smokers.

And don't even try to tell me there's a difference.
  • Yes publish the names! LOL If your child was being raped in the woods by a pedophile, wouldnt you want the nearest homeowner with a gun to shoot him?

they publish the names of sex offenders in effort to protect the public.

they publish the names of people who own pit bulls in effort to protect the public and those 2 examples seem to be ok with everyone.

why not publish the names of those who own guns?

I think know1 made a good point that smart criminals could use this to target non gun owners.

And sex offenders are listed because they broke the law.

I haven't ever heard of a pit bull owner public list. I have heard of towns banning pit bulls though.

Under your logic I am, as a legal law-abiding gun owner equal to a sex offender in respect to public safety.

    That's an insult.

Jesus man, where do you even draw those conclusions from.

I'm actually starting to agree with these gun nuts, more emphasis needs to be placed on mental health issues, starting with a few on here.

It is a very bad comparison. And insulting as well to those (including me) that own a firearm.

Hypothetical questions do not = mental health. They actually = reality sometimes!

B/c it's no one's fucking business, until I do something illegal lose the privilege of privacy. Your mindset is frightening.

As for the op, I don't really understand why they need to publish such a list. It could only have a negative effect.

Maybe, but I think the personal insult card is usually played in an effort to change the subject or distort the issue. I do think the pitbull comparison is spot on - many people don't realize their dog can be dangerous until it is too late. And I am a dog lover. Too many of the gun advocates I have interacted with in the last few weeks are clinging to this idea that their guns are safe guns. And they probably are...right up until the moment when they are not.

Chances are its the nearest homeowner committing the rape, so no I'd rather not include a gun into that scenario. Now we're both playing silly hypothetical situations
