why not publish the names of those who own guns?

where do they publish the names of dog owners? never heard of that one! what city?
they used to do it in missouri. st. john, charlack, and other small town papers have done it.

this was a few years ago when my sister got her pit bull. not sure if they still do it now. i have a lab so it does not concern me.

you can drop a gun and it might go off. so yeah that is a potential danger. it happens all the time.

don't claim that it doesn't happen.

So in your mind I'm no better than a child molester. Good to know.

with being a "lawabiding" gun owner this info is a matter of public record. A news outlet decided to do a story. One which I would have to assume(not having seen or read) they thought was for public safety.
Dont like it? Work to change what info is fit for the public domain.

  • I am pro gun and I don't think there is anything wrong with the list. Like people said it is a matter of public record. It is my understanding that these are permits for handguns. In WA where I reside we don't need a permit to own a handgun. Only if you conceal and carry. I am all for making background checks more in depth but i'm not into the banning thing whether it be assault like rifles or high capacity mags. Didn't work, won't work, and only made a bunch of gun nuts alot of money. Even if you banned all guns from now on there would be a huge black market. The hundreds of million guns already in America would still last a very very long time. I guess you could have a very extensive and expensive buy back along with the total ban. That would cut down the amount. It could possibly cost a trillion dollars or so. The government would have a big problem on their hands if they actually started to ask for or take back peoples firearms.

Under your logic I am, as a legal law-abiding gun owner equal to a sex offender in respect to public safety.

    That's an insult.

I don't agree with it, but I don't think you should take it so personally. He didn't say gun owners were like pedophiles. If you just try for a second to realize what his angle was, you'd realize he was just trying to identify potential threats. They can be completely unrelated but still be threats. Don't try so hard to be insulted... But yeah, it's a silly comparison and the idea of publishing gun owners names is silly too.

  • I like that the information is available via a public records request. However, I think publishing that kind of info is unnecessary... Except, that I think it's valuable for people to know what kind of information is obtainable by John Q Public.

I try to remain aware of what people can find out about me without asking me directly, especially after an extended stint on unemployment. I've searched records, and I do not look good on paper.

i would have liked to know who in my neighborhood has guns so that my kids do not go over to their house without supervision.

It's probably not the best idea to let children go to anyone's house unsupervised. If "fearing" a legal gun owner in my neighborhood when it comes to child safety is my biggest problem...I'll lay all of my chips as the kid being safe.

Guess we need to publish lists of people who have pools...since children that are unsupervised have a grossly higher chance of being accidentally killed by drowning than by accidental gun discharge. Also include in that list posions, fire. suffocation, etc.

Chicago had a gun ban, how was that working out?
  • unfortunately the gun climate is starting to feel a lot like the abortion issue. anti gun people getting it in their heads that they can do no wrong because being pro gun is being pro baby killer and no one can be pro killing babies except evil people. are we about to see gun shop owners being murdered by "right to lifers"?

    Wow
    Name calling, insults and labelling!
    I must comment
    READ THE ARTICLE PEOPLE
The names and addresses of the two NY counties' permit-holding residentswere obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.
Also: The website notes that the map does not indicate whether the residents own handguns, only that they are legally able to, and that the data do not pertain to rifles or shotguns, which can be bought without a permit.
Do any of you who are pissed own a car?
Do any of you who are pissed own a home?
    All part of the FOIA...
    Been around since the 60's...
Call me crazy, I don't believe gun thefts, house theft or car thefts have increased due to FOIA
I also don't think some deranged group of people are going to cross reference a list to rob a home NOT on the list.
I also believe if you are a parent (and half of you commenting on this issue here are not) the info of where you're child is playing/spending time re: to having guns in said place is important. Especially if you are not a gun owner. Why? The questions that should be asked:
    1) Are your guns locked up?
    2) Does your child have access to locked up guns/ammo?
    3) Is it safe?
    4) Are the people there trained to use such firearms?
    5) Do any of the children have access to the lockers where the firearms are kept?
    6) Do any of the people who have access to said firearms have any mental incapacity that should prevent them from handling such things?

everyone who purchases whiskey, wine, gin or tequila, brandy or bourbon should have their names & residence alphabeticalised & put on public display.

everyone involved in domestic abuse... listed & publicly displayed, alphabeticalized front & center. same as all others.

anyone buying ninja swords... listed & displayed for public viewing at the court house, public libraries, local mcdonalds', all kentucky fried chickens' & taco bells...

all folks who eat fast food trash... alphabeticalized, gathered up, listed, flogged & brutalized with bats covered in barbwire then rubbed down w/ giant salt licks & piranha

child predators... public execution... bushmaster .223, hanging, medieval torture devices, boiled in their own pudding, heavy equpiment largeness rolling them flat w/ a lot of fire... all publicly listed right down the line alphabetized... this goes back 100 years or further... yes we may dig up graves of child molesters & light their bones on fire then crush them w/ heavy equipment and drown their nasty asses

I've read or heard, dunno which, recently that it's best to live like every action is in public. And, it wasn't about conforming to other people's standards. It was about owning your shit.

I'm pretty sure I know some people who would be willing to own up to eating fast food trash despite your suggested consequences.

I would say the public has more to worry about as far as accidental child deaths from legal gun owners. They're doing their jobs. Almost four times more kids die from suffocation that accidental gun issues.

That's a matter of opinion.. I would say any accidental deaths of children with gums is too many. And also, Adam Lanzas mother was a responsible legal gun owner until a few weeks ago, so no, they're not all doing their jobs.
With all the talk about mental health care, if we were able to improve in this field and at the same time enact some restrictions on guns, we might avoid some crazy people suffocating their kids and at the same time we might avoid some mass shooting. Imagine that, doing two things at once!

ban the guns and problem solve..

Are you saying all firearms should be confiscated or that they just shouldn't be sold going forward? Also, what outcomes are you hoping to achieve and what evidence are using to benchmark how similar actions have achieved those outcomes in the past? Remember, you're taking a majority of municipalities where firearms have been legal and available for a couple centuries.
