  • I was proudly in the NRA, I'm still glad they are around and doing what they do or we would have some ridiculous gun laws out there. I quit because they were constantly and i mean constantly asking for money to help further their cause. Which is cool, but I'm in texas and we love guns in texas so there isn't a lot of need for them. But like i said, I'm glad the NRA exists. Can it still be my fault even if i'm not a member anymore? It would be a great conversation starter.
if you think what I believe is stupid, bizarre, ridiculous or outrageous.....it's ok, I think I had a brain tumor when I wrote that.

I am not trying to start a debate, but I am curious as to what you would consider a "ridiculous gun law".

Do you think the NRA would ever coooperate in devising some sort of "middle ground"?

I'm not in the NRA, but I do own firearms. I love to hunt and shoot at a few local gun clubs.

Just sharing some information from an article I just read:
    http://www.ctpost.com/news/article/Source-29-dead-including-22-children-in-Newtown-4118505.php?cmpid=twitter

"Connecticut's gun laws are tougher than the national average. Consumers need permits to buy handguns. Assault-style weapons are banned as is the possession of bullet-proof vests. Another law, adopted about 10 years ago, lets neighbors who are suspicious of the activities of other neighbors to file police reports. Also, people with protective orders filed against them are prohibited from owning firearms."

  • NRA haters, if you family was threatened, and the law would do nothing about it. What would you do. Seriously, if someone was leaving death threats at your door, harassing phone calls, signs around your neighborhood and the police did nothing, what would you do. You'd think, the Police will help right, WRONG. Threats are just that, a threat. I've experienced this, and believe me.......I could not have been happier to walk into one of these stores and purchase my 9mm and protect my family with it.

I read an article not long ago - I wish I could find it - about how there are moderates in the NRA, people who WANT stricter gun buying rules and restrictions on the gun shows, etc. But the moderates are drowned out by the people who say, "If we give in on ONE thing, the government will take away ALL our rights."

Which of course isn't true and I've posted this before - I own a gun, I consider myself a responsible gun owner but why can't there be more restrictions? Reasonable restrictions, not taking away everybody's guns.
  • i'm not sure, i would have to go back and look and what they were trying to stop. see they would send these emails with updates about what they were trying to accomplish or stop in each of the different states. mostly states with tougher gun laws. no i don't think the nra wants any common ground. they are like a pit bull alpha male, any giving in is weakness to them so they will fight every possible thing.

Agree, I think it's a game-changer too. A kindergarten class. You can't even wrap your mind around that.

I think there are people that need our thoughts and prayers right now. This will be politicized to the nth degree (and probably rightly so), but now's probably not the time.

i thought the last one in colorado was the game changer?

i thought the giffords shooting was the game changer?

i'm not arguing with you, because this event is honestly disgusting. it takes a lot to make me experience nausea when i read a news article, but that is what i felt today.

truth is. there will be no changing the game as long as people in government do not take a firm position on where they stand on the issue.

it is time for a real discussion on gun rights and gun control in this country. not just bullshit lip service.

which is what we will get. If we have limits on certain speech, we can certainly have limits on certain weapons and the clips that go with them.

  • for what it's worth, as a gun owner/collector/lover, i would be ok with these restrictions.
no guns for anyone convicted of anything violent. extensive background checks and registration system for every gun purchased
pistols- 21 years or older, with extensive classes and shooting requirements for a carry conceal permit.
semi auto rifles- 21 years or older with a gun safety class
full auto- i think full auto is fine right now in texas. if i'm not mistaken, you have to get a class 3 permit which is a couple hundred bucks plus you have to get a recommendation from a judge or sheriff in your county that explains why you want/need a fully automatic machine gun. also, the bastards cost 20 to 30 thousand bucks, so they are pretty hard to come by.

Thank you. I love to hear this stuff from gun owners. There are a lot of small things that could be altered that might slow the process of an unstable person on their way to a mass killing, or just an irresponsible person wanting a gun because its so easy to obtain. Small compromises could work.

Also, we need tougher penalties for illegal guns...Very tough penalties for this.
I've also heard of programs in the past where local police stations offer something in return for citizens turning in unregistered or stolen/misplaces guns. I'd be willing to pay more taxes to fund something like that.

I dont know. This is a completely different level of hell. If this was done with a semi-auto weapon I think those will be all but toast and nobody is going to want to publicly stand in the way.
Like you said just thinking about this, makes the room spin and your teeth go numb
