True. With that said, I dont want Pearl Jam to play the SB.........because you have to be a sellout to accept that offer.
Also probably true.the nfl and the network produce the show...atleast they did last night
Again, also true.
Which means that PJ might not want backup singers and Lady Gaga (I was more or less joking in my initial response), but because the show is usually not produced by the band, they wouldn't have a lot of ability to protest if the producers wanted, say, Steven Tyler to come out and sing with the band. (Can you imagine the boardroom thinking that would produce a suggestion like this? Sadly, I can...)
This all leads me back to my subjective conclusion that PJ playing the Super Bowl is a nightmare scenario.1998-06-30 Minneapolis

Spin me around, roll me over, f*cking circus... was my first thought.
Actually the first one was, oh god no.
I am just a dreamer, but you are just a dream...

So what if the NFL said - hey, whataya think of having Pete play with you?
Why are folks saying what pj would be "forced" to do based on what peas and Madonna did? That makes no sense. You need look no further than the who, Springsteen, petty to see that bands that don't do that stuff ordinarily, don't do it here? I've never seen Madonna, but I'm guessing her actual show is not much different than the over production we ignored last night.
And I love the sell out comments. So,when thet get in the rock hof, should they decline? Or do what their heroes did and accept? The sb is a prestigious event. Pj should be begging to do it just to mark it off their bucket list. It has nothing to do with getting a popularity bump or selling out. It's just something cool to do that not many folks get to do. And it is the largest crowd by far that would ever have the option of seeing them.
I don't care either way, but all this self righteousness is silly. They work with ticketmaster! Can we please stop pretending they are in their 20's?Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.0 -

Look I'm not trying to debate the politics of selling out or not (although I seriously beg to differ that the Super Bowl is a prestigious event or that PJ would have it on their "bucket list"); I'm just saying that for me personally, seeing PJ on that stage, with the ridiculous circus that it is, is personally a nightmare for me as a fan. It's not self-righteousness; its my opinion.
I guess I'm actually shocked that more people think PJ would actually entertain playing something like this. With all we know about the band, is there any doubt that the band (Ed in particular) would be completely averse to this? Again, this is just my opinion and I'm just shocked that on this point, more people don't share it.1998-06-30 Minneapolis

I'm not going to pretend to know what someone I don't know personally thinks, but who doesn't want to be a rock star and play in front of 100 million people?
I also find it interesting that it seems that folks on this board think pj is not talented or good enough to overcome the limitations of the set up. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
And going on MTV unplugged is NOT selling out, but playing to the biggest audience of your life is?Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.0 -

going on MTV UnPlugged at the beginning of your career, 20yrs ago, is NOT selling out....
playing the SuperBowl 20yrs & 70 million records later, IMO.....is

I think the feeling is mutual. I'm guessing they are not on the nfl's radar. Maybe if Theo becomes NFL commissioner, that rumor could start.

And what is going on late night tv and agreeing to sing balls in your mouth? (as funny as that was)
And who cares? Either I like their music or I don't. Whatever they choose to do is fine with me.Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.0 -

I don't care, but I don't see how that is not worse. The only reason to do that is sell records. Which is perfectly fine. But feel free to rationalize.
They would do it if asked (assuming they are not forced to do a Madonna style show. Though it would be fun to see Stone in a corset.

No million dollar stage set-up, extravagant costumes, outrageous light show ... just a simple stage and PJ.
Now that would be entertaining and something to see (definitely better than sitting thru another boring lip-synced performance by Madonna). And who wouldn't love to see Eddie staring into the camera and repeatedly screaming "F@%k NBC ... berating the crowd, excutives and government officials..... while destroying the stage. :PBrian Merkle0 -

Fair enough. But who turns down the biggest gig of their lives? Paul McCartney didn't. The Who didn't. Bruce Springsteen didn't. So on and so forth.Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.0 -
can anyone who thinks pj would play the sb please get a clue and leave? if you have any clue what the band is about you know they wont be there. sorry for candor but its just how it is.He was ok but wondering about wandering0

The Who sounded terrible & they said so: "Daltrey says, "It didn't even feel like a concert. It's a television show. And what can you do in twelve minutes?"
He continued, admitting that the show could have gone better, "Cameras were everywhere, I was so blinded that I couldn't see.
Springsteen did ok....but what did he gain?
agree to disagree

wasnt springsteen also on american idol or one of those shit shows? w all due respect to all other bands, they still arent Pj. i can maybe see it when pj's reached the iconic level of a springsteen or who (if they do). Basically, when theyre really, really old and its just like what the hell, why not?He was ok but wondering about wandering0

I'd bet that the artists that play the SB Halftime show are only doing it because they are getting obscene amounts of money to do so..... I'm guessing that gig could command a cool million.0
