Most of the stuff sounds rushed, like they banged it out as quickly as possible.

people don't like it because it's a shit album with copious amounts of boring filler.

songs like cropduster, ghost, green disease, and bushleager are almost laughably bad.

I'm really surprised by this! To me it sounds lovingly crafted and bitter sweet, and lyrically and musically I think they are on top form!

I'm surprised there's not a bigger backlash against Backspacer as lyrically, in large parts I think, it's pretty ropey and musically is not up to scratch. This to me seemed more rushed than any album so far and Olé seems like a b-side off this project. There are still some choice tracks on there though!!

I hope this isn't the sound they carry forward, or they get better at it, whatever "it" is, but Of the Earth is rocking so I'm not too worried!

I read an article around the time of release which said something like Eddie in particular didn't want to do loads of vocal takes - but this was deliberate - he wanted to get into a particular place, record the vocal raw - and then that was the take.

From the article I read, and from listening to it - I don't think that seems a case of rushing it but rather of trying to capture something a bit real. I love Eddie's vocals on Riot Act, I really do - and the vocals have been the main thing I have always focused on in Pearl Jam's stuff, since the early days. I personally think some of the vocals on Riot Act are amongst the best we've had from EV - it's just a different side of them. Nobody else seems to think this though - so I should probably go and sit in the corner on my own.....

From the article I read, and from listening to it - I don't think that seems a case of rushing it but rather of trying to capture something a bit real. I think the vox can be a bit dry at times, but I think that helps give them more impact live. I generally dig the studio versions and all the intricacies they offer, but RA may be one of the few exceptions to the rule.

Just been looking for the article I remember, in my house and online, because it was a good one. No joy though. It was a musician type magazine with Tom Morello on the cover (Audioslave debut), and stuff about Riot Act inside. Irritating....

I love it, listen to it all the time... in fact I need a new one my CD is scratched and old. Slowly replacing all the old tapes and CDs with the 10C ones... My old ones are worn and torn and abused...they go everywhere with me. Yeah an Ipod would be easier...but...

It's not that most people hate it. If I had 9 kids i would love them all. But if you ranked all their SAT scores, there is bound to be someone who comes in dead last.

Binaural and Riot Act are the retards of the family. It's still Pearl Jam but its not very hard to notice where they stack up aginst some of their more brilliant siblings. Give them a seat in the back and a bib.
