  • I like it more than I used to, but it's still in my bottom 3 of studio albums.

For one thing, as far as listening to an album from start to finish goes, Riot Act doesn't seem to have any flow to me. It just feels, to me at least, like a collection of songs as opposed to an album. I think there is a fine line between having an album that is diverse and eclectic, and having an album that is just all over the place and the songs just don't seem to belong together. I would say No Code is the former, and Riot Act is the latter.

And while I like some of the songs on Riot Act, I don't LOVE any of them. I like the outtakes better than 2/3 of what made it on the record.

This is all a matter of taste obviously, but that's why I don't like it as much as other albums.

Riot Act is one of my favorites, I've loved it ever since it came out. Some people complain that Ed's vocals sounded too "tired" or "sad" on it...well, after all the crap he'd gone through in the couple of years before the album was recorded, I'm not surprised!

I never could really pinpoint why I dont love this album more, but I think you nailed it on the head. its the FLOW. I dislike cropduster, Ghost, Get Right, and You are, but I think the rest of the album is outstanding.

This...and I felt obliged to say it b/c sadly I fall outside of Dimi's "most fans" demographics. Being a shade north of his 30-35 assessment, I fell in love with Ten the first time I heard it.

That being said, this biased fan doesn't think Pearl Jam has put out a bad album. Riot Act is not among my favorites though.

    Hell yes. :D

    Definitely.

Right there in my top three, between Vitalogy and Binaural, and #1 in terms of times played. Probably the album that took the longest to grow on me, but I just can't get enough of it. Really feels like an odd addiction now. :?

  • i love riot act my vinyl copy of it is probs one of my most favourite things! i love every single song from this album my least favourite from it is probs help help however i think it is awesome live. ghost is one of my favourite ever pearl jam songs and then uve got i am mine, half full, you are, save you, get right, green disease all in my opinion amazing songs which i will never wana stop listening to. i do like it when this album gets some love cus it dont happen enough! my favourite album along with ten nough said :)

not only is ghost one in a handful of pj faves for me, i think its their most underrated song. especially live, this track just rips. st paul 2003 is my perfect version and a perfect example, just 4 songs in (following of the girl >last exit >gtf to boot) and with slightly altered lyrics. its prob my 3rd most desired song i have yet to see live, behind only fatal and HTI. the album as a whole is one of my faves because it came out right around the time i became a bit 'obsessive' about this band. 2000 tour was my first show, followed by purchasing every boot from that tour, and then the 2003 tour was the first one i was on the board everynite there was a show, a-setlist a-following. :D good times. that said, its not my top album but it is up there.

  • Riot Act is one of my least listened to Pearl Jam albums
It took time for it grow on me definitely, that and self titled as whole albums took their sweet time before I really connected to them. I only occasionally listen to the album as a whole - I tend to just listen to most of the songs on their own. I always get a craving to listen to Cropduster or 1/2 Full. - 2 of the best songs on there IMO.

For me, it's more about the moods and messages in the album that I didn't emotionally connect with straight away. Maybe it's because I'm only 16 or haven't experienced some of what's going on in the albums-but the instant connection that I had with Ten, Vs, Vitalogy, No Code + Yield wasn't there with Riot Act. Yes with a majority of the songs it's there now and it did take time, and it's still not 100% because I'm not forcing it to happen.

I personally think that the lyrics are great - some of the songs contain wonderful, insightful lyrics. There is definitely less Mike and Stone but I don't necessarily think that this detracts from the album. I think, similarly to Binaural, it's an album of moods and atmospheres. But it is definitely more varied in these moods and maybe that does make the flow a bit jerky but to me it's not an album to listen to as a whole. I prefer it separately, like I do Vitalogy.

As to Eddie's voice - well I think it was just another shift in style and how he's singing - I don't think it sounds weak and it only sounds "sad" because of the songs, the lyrics, the atmosphere of them. I think Eddie's voice has these subtle and then not-so-subtle changes each album and again, they just add to the music.

And also because Eddie cut his hair.

    Joking, of course
  • I like Riot Act, but I'd probably switch out "Green Disease" and "Get Right" for "Down" and either "Undone" or "Other Side." It's not that they're bad songs--I just don't think they're great and I like the b-sides and the other songs on the album better. I'm not sure why they've played "Green Disease" more than the band has played "Cropduster" and "Ghost" combined, but they clearly don't share my opinion on this matter (although they have played "Down" 10 more times than "Green Disease," so at least that song gets some love, too).

I don't really care about Push Me Pull me but Help Help is definitely a keeper

I miss songs with somewhat non-typical arrangements like Help Help or Faithfull....I'm starting to wonder if we'll ever see any again :?

no code and yield were a different time period. If you were going to shows and listening to bootlegs during this time period you would understand. I remember working at a gas station on 11/3/96 and blasting the live feed from berlin.
also no code was my first show (randall's night 2) and yield was the first time I traveled to s ee the band live (san diego/la both nights along with 8 other shows).

Riot act live doesn't come close to either album live. There's a reason riot act is the bands lowest sold album.
