Eddie's voice sounded incredible at his last solo show in Sydney, I couldn't fault his voice at all. I do think that Eddie's voice sounds more powerful when you are actually there though (in comparison to other singers). I knew he would sound great before I saw the solo show, but from the moment Eddie opened his mouth I was completely awestruck for his entire set.

Yes I am 110% against smoking in general and hope that Ed chooses to quit for his own reasons. Singing voices also do deteriorate with age, but given that Ed is only a few years away from turning 50 he is still sounding great.

I saw Dylan a few years back and he is one of my all time favorites.. and to sit through that show, watching a true hero to me, listening to how he sings now... Folks, we are all still very blessed.. complaining about an "h" sound?? Its just fuckin ridiculous to me...

I saw a clip of Bob Dylan's 2011 performance at the grammy's and he sounded really bad to me...

Uh... James Hetfield? But that's not necessarily a good thing -- I really don't care for the way he sings the pre-black album stuff nowadays.

Hey, shouldn't the subject of this thread be "Eddie: Adding H's to words that begin with vowels=HUGH!!!"?

Don't get wrong, i still think he has the most amazing voice. BUT, this new style he's adopted, willingly or unwillingly(cigarettes), is a bit annoying at times. It's very breath-y, and john mayer-ish(that's WAY too harsh, just the first breath-y singer i thought of that i can't stand), but the worst part is when he adds an "H" to every word that begins with a vowel. It even happens in the middle of words too. Again, his voice is still unreal, but this "style" of singing, for lack of a better word, drives me crazy !:) Anyone else notice or agree?? Example: Speed of Sound: "a whisper HIN the dark..." Can't Keep on uke songs: "HIVE lived, all these lives.... HI won't live forever..." ...just a couple examples.

Does anyone know if Ed has always been a ciggy smoker? It seems to have only become a habit in the 2000's? I know he use to smoke a lot of pot, maybe the habit was substituted for the other?
He has always smoked cigs.. since San D. Sad to say.. I finally quit this year and it's hard.. I HAVE NOTICED THAT HE SEEMS TO NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE IT THROUGH TO THE "BREAK" before he requires a cig these days..That sucks.. It is quite the difference from have been smoking for 14 years then to quit.. suddenly I can breathe...I agree he should quit, for health's sake alone.. but again it's HIS choice.. and it is a very hard thing to just walk away from..

Honestly the only person that I can think of that still can hit the notes they did when they started is the singer from Extreme (Gary something or other). I saw them play recently with Ratt (yes it was an amazing 80's hair metal show, don't judge me!) and he sounded INCREDIBLE. Steven Pearcy, not so much, but whatever the singer from Extreme has been doing has worked wonders.

my thoughts haven't changed from last years post
for me he keeps getting better and better and growing as an entertainer and person

as far as the smoking thing...

some people don't want to quit, this I respect and totally understand.

There are an awful lot of 'shoulds' going on in this world, seems more and more everyday.
I'm more for 'cans' cause it is our own path we walk, learning and choosing on the way.

I can do it my way even if its the wrong way because that is the right way for me.

I hate smoking cigs but I will defend to the death his right to smoke.

I saw him in Sydney in 2009 and he had a terrible cold/flu but absolutely gave it his all. Three days later in Brisbane he had recovered and was absolutely on fire!

The thing with Ed is that he remains true to the music. He never changes the vocal in a song simply because he is tired of singing it in a particular way like many singers do. I respect him for that.

The 'h' thing, the cig thing etc are all small things compared to the greatness of the musician that he is! :|

He has always smoked cigs.. since San D. Sad to say..

He didn't start smoking until '94, just after Kurt died.

People are just too sensitive about this whole thing.
About a year ago I posted a thread on the evolution of Mike's live performace, specifically his solo work, and how I think it's become too safe and repetitive (one note solos anyone?) and there were similar responses.

"Uh, I don't hear it" "Leave the guy alone" "Mike can still shred, you're crazy!"

There is a difference between criticism and pointing out something that's glaringly obvious. Some people on here get more offended by pointing these things out than if I was to make fun of their mom!

Oh, since I commented on Ed's vocal changes earlier in this thread, I might as well just say this...
    Your mom is fat!

The Austin City Limits show was a bit of a disaster...he's definitely better than that.

His voice sounds amazing on the solo shows....that type of setting definitely plays to his strengths at this point.
