His voice sounds amazing on the solo shows....that type of setting definitely plays to his strengths at this point.

Does anyone know if Ed has always been a ciggy smoker? It seems to have only become a habit in the 2000's? I know he use to smoke a lot of pot, maybe the habit was substituted for the other?
He has always smoked cigs.. since San D. Sad to say..

He didn't start smoking until '94, just after Kurt died.
Funny you say that.. cause look at alot of the pics from Lollaplooza, and the shortly after Smashing Pumpkins tour.. he has a cig in his hands or mouth in many that was 92 and I've seen pics of him with the Bad Radio guys..where he has a cig in his mouth.. so..Either way it's his life which is the entire point..

Just going off of what the man said himself about when he started. It's not that big of a deal to me.

  • Right or wrong I can't ever find it in my being to criticize Eddie Vedder.

Given me way too much with so little in return.

    Yes. This.

This argument crops up every now and then on this board.

It's true Ed can't hit some of the notes -- or, rather, the screams -- of the early records. But by the same token, there is shit he does today that he couldn't have done in 1992 either.

I contend 1992 Ed could never have pulled off Arc. Seriously. Go listen to recordings from the recent solo tours and tell me -- pause to stifle a laugh -- that Ed Vedder can't sing.

It's just that his wheelhouse has changed. He's not going to sound great on "Blood" anymore. He'll knock "Just Breathe" out of the park.

He totally cold have done Arc 1992 - 1999. Just go back and listen to those Tower Record instores from 1992.

I totally agree with this thread. The cogs hurt. Ed go cold turkey til Sept! Plus maybe you'll have some extra angst!

I will say, I thought his voice sounded really good on 2006 tour. Best since 2000.

Personally, I think the Ed solo tour setting is really the best setting for the ol' voice.
Him, sitting and really putting the effort into the tunes really made his voice sound incredible on this current solo tour.
I saw him in San Diego and his voice blew me away. The PJ shows I've seen and heard from '03 to present have really been hit and miss.

Face it, the guy is 46. He still has one of the best singing voices in the history of music, but to deny it's decline over the years makes one blind...er tone-deaf.

I hope PJ doesn't necessarily retire any songs, but I do think some just sound bad anymore.
That, or just have the guys sit and play...it's not like they move around much (other than Mike) anyways... :? :D

I agree with this post!

I also agree with the above post. And wow.. some of the comments from people just make me think that some of the members are either asking for too much or are just not feeling the passion anymore. Sad!! I am sure the fans in Central America and South America and other parts of the world that don't get spoiled like us in the US will be jumping from joy and thankful to the fullest extent to have in their country such awesome and beautiful voice!!

    .

I have, and I disagree. He had a more powerful voice back then. But "more powerful" doesn't necessarily mean "more technically sound."

Since we're going back in time, go listen to any show from 1995 -- even the legendary Soldier Field show. There are some REALLY rough vocal moments on that tour.

I stand by what I said earlier: Technically speaking, Ed is a better SINGER now than he once was. At pushing 50, his voice just isn't suited for the powerful, screaming stuff anymore. He's better suited to the slower or mid-tempo stuff. His wheelhouse has changed. That's all.

What's happened to Ed's voice isn't any different than what's happened to Roger Daltrey's.

second verse same as the first.......

this has been an ongoing to topic since the advent of message boards.

and he is still bringing it at forty freaking Six.....
  • If you heard him last night you would have nothing bad to say about the quality of Ed's voice. I've never heard it better. Sure, he wasn't performing Blood and screaming the whole time but vocally I think he is at his prime.

I own Soldier Field (def an off vial might) plus 50 more boots circa 92 through 99 and there is no doubt that the Eddie of that era had the power, techincal wherewithal and finesse to ace Arc with half his vocal chords tied behind his back. I stand behind what I said. Get out your time machine and let's go back to 1992 and settle this debate like real men!
