I could be wrong, but isnt this the guy who came out with a song that sounded identical to Yellow Ledbetter?
Just as much as yellow ledbetter sounds eerily familiar to Little Wing?
Not quite as much.Pick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)0 -

at 6:20 the lump in the throat started, at 6:50 i was still holding back the tears, soon after that the floods came. no one, no one makes that guitar cry like Mike. And he makes it look so effortless. inevitably, at shows, my eyes are closed as i just take in the beauty of that sound, and i have to remind myself to "watch!". Mike is God!
now let's see John Mayall do that to me...i don't think so :roll:peace,

I knew my answer before any of those Mayer clips, but even after watching them...its not close, Mike is a better technical guitar player, can improv better, has more varied style of playing, looks cooler doing it, and is ten times the human being John Mayer is....and to the person who said SRV is better than Hendrix, yeah, you dont know squat :roll:I hold the pain, release me!0

I'm guessing you don't play the guitar  . Jimi is more creative but SRV destroys him in all other aspects. Hendrix is a sloppy mess compared to SRV. SRV never plays a bum note and he's playing with fat gauge strings that would make your fingers bleed.zootown wrote:I knew my answer before any of those Mayer clips, but even after watching them...its not close, Mike is a better technical guitar player, can improv better, has more varied style of playing, looks cooler doing it, and is ten times the human being John Mayer is....and to the person who said SRV is better than Hendrix, yeah, you dont know squat :roll:0 -
John Mayer is an incredibly talented guitarist, unfortunately he writes poppy crap songs most of the time. His live performances are great though. He does some good stand up in between songs and can really make his electric sing when he is playing the blues. He really is quite amazing.0

Ive played guitar since I was 11...so 29 years now. Hendrix INVENTED chords and progressions that had never been played before, his songwriting ability was massively superior. I see your point that SRV was more "clean" than Hendrix and he can certainly play blues scales mighty fast. I would challenge anyone to learn songs like Castles Made of Sand, Voodoo Child, Little Wing, etc note for note, especially the solos. And not to mention, Hendrix revolutionized the way effects were used and how the electric guitar was played. I think SRV is an amazing guitar player, better than McCready or Mayer by a country mile, but in my book, no one is better than Hendrix. It was good thing for SRV that he was that talented, or he would have been dismissed as a complete Hendrix wannabe (and in some circles that is how he is regarded). I doubt we will agree.....but one more thing, Hendrix died at 27, which means he had only played the instrument for 13-14 years with zero formal instruction...its scary to think about how good he would have become if he would have stayed aliveI hold the pain, release me!0 -
Being a 'technically' trained guitarist as opposed to one who plays from an emotional training make Mike the better of the two IMO. When soloing, Mayer resorts to his training and it sounds differently, soap vs dirt - clean vs distorted. My son has taken lessons for over 8 yrs since he was 6, and to play the blues for the sound style he emulates (Hendrix, SRVaughn, Mike) he drops the technical skill and plays them by ear like the early blues musicians did. He is also left handed like JH & MM, playing a right handed guitar which I believe changes the manner in which he places his fingers on the frets when riffing and strumming also creating a different sound. Mayer plays a very clean notes style. Chris can play both but IMO the loose style sounds more bluesy to me, so I opt for dirt over soap sound everytime. : ) He could explain it better technically, I just know which sound I prefer and my experience from watching him play & learn over the yrs. Wonder what the kid thinks about Derek Trucks' style.======================================================================

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88rF8T2S3Dk Hendrix never played his songs as well as SRV. He's more creative but not better at playing the guitar. It's not even close. Jimi's live playing is all over the place.0

A person can be a better guitar player than another person. It's a learned craft. The things they play may tickle your fancy more but it's not impossibble to compare. People have trouble removing the emotional attachment sometimes.
Neither Mayer or Mccready jumps out at me as the clear cut winner as a guitar player. Both good enough for people to say "that guitar player has some pretty nice chops", but a long way from players like Page,Hendrix or SRV's for the overall mastery of of the instrument.0 -

. I agree with alot of that. I'm just talking about live playing. SRV> Jimi 0 -
Will john mayer still be relevant and playing as good as mike in 2031? i think not. Mike has been playing lead guitar in one of the biggest bands for the past 20 years. he is better now that he ever was. if you take mike out of Pj they dont exist. he gives them that edge. hes truely great. mayer has a lot of catching up to do but to say he is better than mike is just lunacy.

Disclaimer: Not trying to put McCready down. He's awesome.
Actually, history will tell you that the solo artist has a greater chance of being around longer.
I still think people are getting too hung up on the songs. Nobody on the board is going to say John Mayer's albums are better than Pearl Jam's (even if it was true, which it isn't anyway).
The point is, remove the "money making" part of John Mayer, and he's a more gifted guitarist. I'd still pay to see Pearl Jam instead (but whould I pay more to see just McCready? Maybe).
And to the person who back hand slapped Clapton - ha, ha, ha. That is funny. Go see him in concert. At 60, he's doing things that even Mikey himself wishes he could do. He is the one guitarist all guitarists look up to. Do yourself a favor and get a ticket next time he's in town. One of the best shows you'll ever see if you like the guitar (funny aside - in college, my roomate goes with his girlfriend to see EC. Next morning she complains that he played too much guitar and didn't sing enough. He had to usher her out of the apartment before I laughed her out). I would pay 10 times what I pay for PJ to see EC. As would Mikey (so to speak). But, to be honest, I have 5 PJ CDs in my car and only 1of EC. Live is where it's at with guys like him.
Here's a test for you - If Pearl Jam decided to play an 2 hours of McCready solos and 20 minutes of the rest of the band, would you go as many times as you've gone? (i.e. not once, but repeatedly). Well, people do that for bands like the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, etc. I'm not trying to put Mike down. But, I think if you took him out of Pearl Jam, you'd have a different opinion of him. Would Mike still be MAIN STREAM relevant if he was no longer in Pearl Jam? Your question isn't a fair one.Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.0 -

Gotta disagree here. Mike noodles on the pentatonic scales for the most part. Very little melody in Mike's solos. Different styles of course, but I don't see very much variety in Mike's solos.0 -

Is Mike relevant now? He basically took Backspacer off. If Mike is this historic guitar figure this board makes him out to be, he doesn't sit out records. I love Mike's guitar playing, and he is the reason I started playing 14 years ago, but he is a good rock guitarist. I bet there are thousands out there with his abilities. He, Stone, and Jeff hit the lottery with Eddie Vedder. They are all talented, but they hit the lottery with Ed. Ed is the reason they are the only Seattle band standing.
I've said it in other threads, but I think PJ's musically style limits McCready's creativity, so I could be wrong.0 -

This. That's the point I made earlier. I don't play guitar but I had much rather listen to SRV do voodoo chile than Hendrix. I listen to music..don't play it, so what pleases these ears the most is what I like...not the "most technically sound" tunes or playing.sawyerjam wrote:
