Mayer is actually a hell of a guitarist. His music is pretty lame but some live performances of his show his talents better than his studio stuff

Definitely. I saw Mayer at Eric Clapton's Crossroads festival last summer and he is pretty damn good live.
  • Mayer is better. I love McCready. He is awesome. But, Mayer can do anything McCready does, and I'm not so sure vice-versa.

To those with the clever why they won't listen to him quips - that's fine. Your loss. I'm not saying buy his normal CD's. But, when you see a Clapton thing come on with him playing (or BB King, etc.) where he's just going to rip and not play the songs you hate, it's worth your time. (And quite frankly if you sit through one of his own concerts you will be rewarded with a couple of shreds that will show you what I and others are telling you).

I remember when I was a kid, folks told me that Prince was one of the best guitarists of all time. I never listened to him b/c I hated his standard fare. Well, he has some stuff out there that would make Jimi cry. And it was my loss for the years that I refused to seek out any of his stuff. He is by far one of the top 2 or 3 guitarists of his generation. You just have to avoid Partying like it's 1999 and find the good stuff.

    Widen your horizons....
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

I think Mayer is awesome, but I don't think he is as creative as McCready.

Both are great guitar players. McCready melts faces and Mayer melts girls hearts. Totally different styles but both obviously very talented.

Both are excellent, just different styles.

John is actually a big PJ fan. I grew up with him and can tell you of numerous times driving around listening to Pearl Jam. He's covered Yellow Ledbetter in concert before (although not recently) but he is a fan of McCready's work.

You can probably also find somebody out there that says the Jonas Brothers and Taylor Swift are better guitar players than Mike. My advice would be to just ignore these people. I will admit I'm not all that familiar with John Mayer's work. I've heard some songs and seen him play on TV a few times, and if what I saw/heard then was any indication I wouldn't say he's all that great. When your friend says "better", maybe he means he likes John Mayer more and not saying he is technically more skilled, because from what I've seen I don't think you can make that argument and keep a straight face.

John Mayer is actually fairly technically talented. He graduated from the Berklee shcool of music, which is a fairly hardcore place. he, unfortunately, chooses to play sappy pappy crap most of the time. when he jams the blues, he is good. as a musician at least
John Mayer dropped out of Berklee after 2 semesters  . He was probably the most boring guitar player there. He's the new Eric Clapton

I could be wrong, but isnt this the guy who came out with a song that sounded identical to Yellow Ledbetter?

Just as much as yellow ledbetter sounds eerily familiar to Little Wing?

Mike is one hell of a player...

John is good, but I am all that well acquainted with his work to make an informed decision...

What I can say is that he clearly likes pj because of previous comments about Black and Betterman, so I like the guy....

This is so true....I guess it's a just way of saying "I like this person's music better than that person's"

BETTER is in the ears of the listener...not necessarily always a matter of actual talent
