This. That's the point I made earlier. I don't play guitar but I had much rather listen to SRV do voodoo chile than Hendrix. I listen to music..don't play it, so what pleases these ears the most is what I like...not the "most technically sound" tunes or playing.
And yeah I'm the idiot who thinks SRV is "better" than Hendrix. May not be but I'll take Stevie any day

im just going to say rory gallagher is better than both

i agree with yellow ledbelly. Eric Clapton is a better guitarist than mike. but i rather listen to PJ then EC. But you did make a great point in that Eric can go on stage for 2 hrs and play like a genius and sing. dont think mike could do that. and Yellow Ledbelly has just convinced me to go and see EC in Dublin in may. BUt i must state that i love how mike makes PJ sound. BUt clapton is one of the best of all time. as i said he gives PJ that edge that i love

Mayer IS a brilliant guitar player, one of the best out there today. Very soulful, I have the feeling he holds back a lot of the time, but every once in a while I hear a lick that just sneaks up on me and is awesome. Nothing wrong with saying he's good.

Although, Derek Trucks wipes the floor with both of them. By far the best guitar player I've ever had the privilege of seeing.

I think Mayer is awesome, but I don't think he is as creative as McCready.

Gotta disagree here. Mike noodles on the pentatonic scales for the most part. Very little melody in Mike's solos. Different styles of course, but I don't see very much variety in Mike's solos.

I see what you're saying about the solos and I agree, but I am talking in ALL of Mikes work, so it just talks to me more. I just think his songs on Yield are earth shatteringly creative. I also thought Mad Season was an awesome step outside of PJ for him.

It's nice to see people here (although they do not like Mayer) still respect his blues work.

................. I love Mike's guitar playing, and he is the reason I started playing 14 years ago, but he is a good rock guitarist. I bet there are thousands out there with his abilities. He, Stone, and Jeff hit the lottery with Eddie Vedder. They are all talented, but they hit the lottery with Ed. Ed is the reason they are the only Seattle band standing.

I've said it in other threads, but I think PJ's musically style limits McCready's creativity, so I could be wrong.

Well...on all other points i would disagree..re: Mike's ability...I think he's the best ...HOWEVER i do have to agree with your statement about Eddie lifting them up to new heights. I know I speak for many when I say that Eddie lured me in at the beginning...and Eddie kept me there throughout the years..allowing me to get to "know" the other band members and the awesome musicians that they are. But you are right, IMO, Eddie is what shot them to stardom and beyond. NOW though, I think each of the band members is a star in their own right. Of course, they were before Pearl Jam (if musicians hadn't been perishing left and right in the 90s things may have been different)...and they will be forever. :) But my thanks HAS to go to Eddie for allowing me to finally realize that yes, Mike IS God :D
    peace,

on a technical scale...maybe. As a songwriter or riffmeister mccready cleans his clocks. Being a good musician means puting out good music and john mayer refuses to do that. He can still play the guitar but his music blows; waste of talent.

I don't like John Mayer's music, but the guy is a phenomenal guitarist.

Hate to say it, but I gotta say Mayer better.

This is ridiculous. This is like saying one athlete that has ability but is rarely seen playing hard is better than another that displays constent effort and is a consistent superstar. You dont reward someone for sometime performance. A true PJ fan wouldn't make any claim that John Mayer is better than Mike McCready. Mayer is known for radio happy crap, and McCready is known for being a phenomenol guitar player. Why is that? I don't know why Clapton is even brought up. He's 65 years old and is still doing it, he doesn't fit into the discussion. Hendrix was great, obviously. But he didn't make past 27. Everything he did will always be magnified ten fold. Stevie Ray was phenomenal too. And at least he was trying to reach his potential. A person can't base Mayer's abilities off of the few times he actually let's loose. And yeah, I've seen his live solos, right after "Your Body is a Wonderland." He's talented, of course. But hes a two-faced artist. Pop bullshit one second, then trying to show he's a real blues artist the next. How can you respect that? McCready gives us our money's worth everytime out. And I disagree that he took a break on Backspacer. Go back and actually listen to it, he's all over the album. And even if he's not as much as other album's, that's part of being in any band. The only consistently featured performer is the lead singer.

Without Pearl Jam, would Mike be a superstar?

John Mayer is with his own thing. And to the OP, that's like saying Ed is only a good guitar player sometimes because sometimes he plays acoustic (well) and when he's playing electric, he's doing things everyone else can do. I'm a Pearl Jam fan, and I think John Mayer is a better player. Being a good player isn't about being flashy all the time, it's about playing whichever part is right for the song, and Mayer does that as well as anybody today.
