I don't know if Mike would be well known or not. But without the crap Mayer puts on the radio would he be a superstar? At least Mike is known for what we're discussing: playing the guitar. Mayer's extremely talented, not saying he isn't. But is production doesn't necessarily display that. (Unless you somehow "get Pearl Jam" and like radio mainstream.) Mayer has ability, but that's called potential, which doesn't really mean shit. Vedder is known for his singing, and hell yeah he can play too. But he's probably the 3rd best guitarist on PJ. Kinda hard to argue otherwise, being that he is the lead singer. Doesn't mean he's not a great guitarist too, but its not like that's his strength, at least to the people that follow him. So do you think Mayer is more talented than Eddie too? Just wondering how casual you are.

  • I now have a new favorite part of this discussion. You're not a real PJ fan if you don't say everything about them is the best thing you've ever seen or heard. Good to know. Blind Faith is always a good thing ;)
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

You should listen to covered in rain by Mayer, it's awesome. Whatever you say about his songs, you can't deny that's one hell of a solo

I think (truly) without the hit singles, Mayer would be a well respected blues player, touring smaller venues. And this crap about 'getting' Pearl Jam and liking radio mainstream... I saw Lady Gaga play last month and loved it, does that make me less of a Pearl Jam fan? I don't hate Mayer for writing good pop songs, he's good at it. Some of them are actually pretty good tunes, while some of it is crap. Furthermore, 'Your Body Is A Wonderland' helped me score, so it can't be all bad.

Do I think he's more talented than Eddie? I think he's a better guitarist for sure, but Eddie's a better vocalist/songwriter. I don't think he can do what Eddie does, and I don't think Eddie can do what he does.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

John Mayer is great at writing pop songs, which appeal to many - usually not myself. That being said, he's a hell of a blues guitarist, with consistently better tone (in my opinion) than Mike's. Do I enjoy John Mayer more than Pearl Jam? Nope! Do I appreciate John Mayer's guitar playing when he pulls out a good bluesy tune more than Mike's typical playing? Absolutely.

    Fair enough, well put.

  • Mayer falls into that category of guitarists who have great chops but play music that doesn't really showcase them at all. I put Prince into that category as well. They are top 40 pop stars who have built careers making r&b infused and occasionally synth-saturated music. We're told they're great players (and they are) but you'd wouldn't know that from, you know, actually listening to their music (at least their well-known stuff). As a guitar player I personally find it kind of maddening.
    So this life is sacrifice...
