Hows the new Alice in Chains album, I'm a bit worried it'll feel too weird having that replacement singer?

Saw them live with the replacement singer in 2007. That guy blows Layne out of the water.

    i wouldnt go that far

I had a Dinosaur Jr break from Backspacer (I think I was craving some lengthy guitar solos) and also listened to Binaural again - I think Backspacer has trained my ears to pick up on the subtleties as I'd never noticed the shuffling chains sound on Slight of Hand before, amazing. Anyways, it felt very reassuring going back to it!

Not listening as much as a I did a couple weeks ago, but definitely gets a daily rotation. Just got the Monsters of Folk album. That shit's killer right now and has - dare I say it :o - taken the lead.

Still my least favourite PJ album. I still have issues with it but i was in CEX today and Backspacer was on so I stayed in the shop for a while listening to it.

How can it be Alice in chains without Layne Staley ? Why is it so hard for musicians to walk away from something that is no more, that goes for everyone from gnr to journey. Why must they feed on the brand that was built with other configurations. Just call it what it is, something different.

A couple of things. Sometimes replacing singers falls flat and sometimes it works. The best example of it working is probably AC/DC. Is AC/DC still AC/DC with out Bon Scott? I would say Brian Johnson was pretty successful when he took over.

As for AIC. I think they can pull it of because AIC wasn't all Layne Staley. Jerry Cantrell wrote alot of the music and had a heavy influence with his backup vocals. Listening to the new album, I don't think I realized how much of the classic AIC was Jerry Cantrell. I'd like to think that AIC has done a great job carrying on. No its not the Layne era AIC, but they're pretty damned good. I think everyone should give them a shot before forming an opinion.

On the flip side could you imagine Pearl Jam have to replace Eddie. That'd be sacrilidge!

The thing with AIC is all down to Jerry Cantrell. Listen to his solo album Degradation Trip, Layne sounds like he's all over that album yet obviously it came out after his death. AIC now sounds great because they have a very competant singer and Jerry still writes 90% of everything so it still sounds like AIC. PJ would die without EV! Anyway, Backspacer took a little while to float my boat in the first place but it's on a good voyage now and still not slowing down. Best songs, The End and Johnny Guitar!! :D

force of nature....top 10 pj song of all time

Whether its top 10 or not, I don't know, but it is definitely the one that has stuck with me the longest since the album came out, which is interesting because it didn't grab my attention much the first time, but I swear I love it more every time I hear it. It is an amazing song, and I might be willing to go as far as to say it is at least my favorite song they have made since Yield came out.

Here too! Was hooked from the 2nd listen onwards...I'll admit the first listen had me going "???" but then those are often the best albums, the ones that take a little time to sink in. I look at 'Backspacer' as yet another significant chapter, from a band who has never given us the same album twice. It's special.
