Saw them live with the replacement singer in 2007. That guy blows Layne out of the water.
i wouldnt go that far0 -
I had a Dinosaur Jr break from Backspacer (I think I was craving some lengthy guitar solos) and also listened to Binaural again - I think Backspacer has trained my ears to pick up on the subtleties as I'd never noticed the shuffling chains sound on Slight of Hand before, amazing. Anyways, it felt very reassuring going back to it!Nature drunk and High0

Not listening as much as a I did a couple weeks ago, but definitely gets a daily rotation. Just got the Monsters of Folk album. That shit's killer right now and has - dare I say it
- taken the lead. 0 -

Oh shit, get your towels ready
It's about to go down
Everybody in the place hit the fucking deck
But stay on your motherfucking toes
We running this, let's go
I'm on a boat, I'm on a boat
Everybody look at me
'Cause I'm sailing on a boat
I'm on a boat, I'm on a boat
Take a good hard look
At the motherfucking boat
I'm on a boat motherfucker, take a look at me
Straight flowing on a boat on the deep blue sea
Busting five knots, wind whipping out my coat
You can't stop me motherfucker, 'cause I'm on a boat
Take a picture, trick, I'm on a boat, bitch
We drinking Santana champ 'cause it's so crisp
I got my swim trunks and my flippie-floppies
I'm flipping burgers, you at Kinko's
Straight flipping copies
I'm riding on a dolphin, doing flips and shit
This dolphin's splashing, getting everybody all wet
But this ain't Seaworld, this is real as it gets
I'm on a boat, motherfucker, don't you ever forget
I'm on a boat and it's going fast and
I got a nautical themed, Pashmina Afghan
I'm the king of the world, on a boat like Leo
If you're on the shore, then you're sure not me, oh
Get the fuck up, this boat is real
Fuck land, I'm on a boat, motherfucker
Fuck trees, I climb buoys, motherfucker
I'm on the deck with my boys, motherfucker
This boat engine make noise, motherfucker
Hey ma, if you could see me now
Arms spread wide on the starboard bow
Gonna fly this boat to the moon somehow
Like Kevin Garnett, anything is possible
Yeah, never thought I'd be on a boat
It's a big blue watery road
Poseidon, look at me, oh, all hands on deck
Never thought I'd see the day
When a big boat coming my way
Believe me when I say I fucked a mermaid
I'm on a boat, I'm on a boat
Everybody look at me
'Cause I'm sailing on a boat
I'm on a boat, I'm on a boat
Take a good hard look
At the motherfucking boat0 -

How can it be Alice in chains without Layne Staley ? Why is it so hard for musicians to walk away from something that is no more, that goes for everyone from gnr to journey. Why must they feed on the brand that was built with other configurations. Just call it what it is, something different.
A couple of things. Sometimes replacing singers falls flat and sometimes it works. The best example of it working is probably AC/DC. Is AC/DC still AC/DC with out Bon Scott? I would say Brian Johnson was pretty successful when he took over.
As for AIC. I think they can pull it of because AIC wasn't all Layne Staley. Jerry Cantrell wrote alot of the music and had a heavy influence with his backup vocals. Listening to the new album, I don't think I realized how much of the classic AIC was Jerry Cantrell. I'd like to think that AIC has done a great job carrying on. No its not the Layne era AIC, but they're pretty damned good. I think everyone should give them a shot before forming an opinion.
On the flip side could you imagine Pearl Jam have to replace Eddie. That'd be sacrilidge!0 -
The thing with AIC is all down to Jerry Cantrell. Listen to his solo album Degradation Trip, Layne sounds like he's all over that album yet obviously it came out after his death. AIC now sounds great because they have a very competant singer and Jerry still writes 90% of everything so it still sounds like AIC. PJ would die without EV! Anyway, Backspacer took a little while to float my boat in the first place but it's on a good voyage now and still not slowing down. Best songs, The End and Johnny Guitar!!

Whether its top 10 or not, I don't know, but it is definitely the one that has stuck with me the longest since the album came out, which is interesting because it didn't grab my attention much the first time, but I swear I love it more every time I hear it. It is an amazing song, and I might be willing to go as far as to say it is at least my favorite song they have made since Yield came out.words seem so out of place.

Here too! Was hooked from the 2nd listen onwards...I'll admit the first listen had me going "???" but then those are often the best albums, the ones that take a little time to sink in. I look at 'Backspacer' as yet another significant chapter, from a band who has never given us the same album twice. It's special."I know I was born and I know that I'll die...the in between is mine"0 -
love it
favourite song from backspacer at the minute is Gonna See My Friend0
