Best official scorer in the business. I just saw him last week and we were joking how Game Five arrived to the seventh inning stretch in a brisk three hours and 15 minutes.
When I used to have to keep track of games on a pitch-by-pitch basis, he had a simple way for keeping track when at-bat reached five pitches on a non full count. He would briefly look at his scorecard, turn around and wave his hand to indicate we were at five pitches.
When he signed his copy of the official scoring book four years ago, he inscribed it: "Thanks for all the fives".
By the way I still keep score that way, partially because it's a way to keep your head in the game.
Forgot to add the way he read the pitching lines was a treat. Here's the line on Pettitte, 7 IP, 2 runs, 4 hits, 1 walk, 9 strikeouts, 1 home run. He would read that a second time and it would end with him saying after a pause and one home run.
Plus nobody hated the sacrifice fly more than him. You'd hear in a low grumble say, sacrifice fly.
Fantasic stuff. I thought you would probably have something great to add about him and was hoping you did. From everything I have read about him today and heard about him in the past, baseball lost a great guy tragically.
I also remember MIchael Kay talking about him quite a bit during one of the Felix Hernandez games. It was the one that there was a passed ball (I believe) on a strike out and the runner reached first. No one could figure out if Hernandez was able to retire every other batter whether it would be counted as a perfect game or not because there were no no hits, errors, or walks but a runner did reach base. I believe Bill Shannon was not even sure and they finally figured out that it would not be a perfect game (which I didn't think it would).0 -

Wood? Seemed like he was huge for them. $11.5 or some shit like that. Way too much. Would love to see him somehow back but he will find a closing role somewhere I would imagine.0 -

i was thinking the other day, "holy shit, nick johnson is a yankee." he got swept under the carpet pretty quickly.
surpised about wood though. thought he would be back.0 -
I definitely think it would be worth it to bring Wood back. Our bullpen wasn't exactly a strong point for most of the season and he was a pretty damn solid eighth inning guy.0
-
Would love to have him back but not for that money, that's crazy0

looks like lee's value will be going down now. 7 earned runs.I miss igotid880

Girardi has been signed. Now please get Jeter done ASAP.0
-
So the guy that the majority of people in this thread wanted to manage the Yankees instead of Girardi has added another gaffe to his resume...
Donnie Baseball ran out of pitchers and had to call the game while managing in the Arizone Fall League.
This on top of...
Not noticing a team batting out of order during a spring training game and walking off and back on the mound and having to take his closer out of the game which resulted in a loss.
I love Mattingly as much as everyone but I think we can all be thankful Cashman and the Steinbrenners picked Girardi over him.0
