Dave Matthews Band vs. Pearl Jam

Easily two of the most amazing live artists of the last two decades, both are comprised of amazing musicians, treat their fans consistenly than many bands ever came close to, and make some of the best and most original music of the last couple decades.
However, Pearl Jam, in my opinion, is superior in nearly every category, except maybe musicianship (Carter Beauford is one of the best drummers, hands down, in a long time - no one can deny that. Boyd Tinsley, although there aren't many violinists in rock music, kicks complete ass and puts an amazing and unique touch to the music. However, I believe that Stone writes better riffs than Dave does, and Dave's songwriting cannot even touch that of Eddie's.)
Pearl Jam is more consistent in their music. It doesn't matter if you hate Riot Act, or their self-titled, or at least in comparison to Ten and Vs. When you look at those two albums in comparison to the latter, they are much, much, much closer than that of Stand Up to Before These Crowded Streets. BTCS was one of the best, most amazing and creative albums of the '90s. Stand Up is repetitive, boring, and doesn't even sound like the same band.
When it comes to fans, both have a large, very loyal following. However, I have to quote the old rule - quality over quantity. Many people like DMB because it's "cool" to love "Dave". Not to take anything away from their loyal fans fromt he beginning, but it's true. Pearl Jam, however, have gotten less popular, and more loyal, fan base over time. They still play the same venues, and sell out the same venues, but at a Pearl Jam show you cannot find hardly anyone who is not a truely dedicated fan. At a DMB show, you'll find preppy high schoolers who know 'American Baby', 'Crash Into Me', and 'Two Step' and get pissed when they don't play it at the show they go to.Pittsburgh 6/23/06

DMB used to be a great live band, last couple times I saw them I was bored, back when BTCS and Everyday were out I used to love going to see them, now all their fans that come see them are so trendy, and just go because, "I'm in college, I have to love DMB", PJ blows them away live, and plus DMB's last album wasn't good at all, had a few good songs on it, PJ's last album was incredible, PJ doesn't keep you waiting 5 years for albums either, then put out songs that sound like you could write them in 10 minutes, I'd much rather go see Dave and Tim or Dave play with Trey9/4/98, 8/4/00, 12/8/02, 12/9/02, 4/15/03, 4/16/03, 4/19/03, 4/25/03, 4/26/03, 4/28/03, 4/29/03, 4/30/03, 7/8/03, 7/9/03, 9/28/04, 9/29/04, 10/6/04, 9/1/05, 9/2/05, 5/16/06, 5/17/06, 5/27/06, 5/28/06, 5/30/06, 6/1/06, 6/3/06, 8/5/07, 6/11/08, 6/12/08, 6/14/08, 6/16/08, 6/24/08, 6/25/080 -

why on earth does this comparison keep cropping up? the two bands are nothing alike. personally i'm not a big fan of DMB, but that's just because they're too jazzy for my taste. i don't even consider them a rock band."Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States, Barack Obama."

Have never understod the deal with DMB...no one listens to them where i live...have two of their records, theyre ok, but kinda boring and i havent listened to them for years.
They seem to be massive in the US, but really ignored in Europe, have no idea why.
Pearl Jam therefore wins, and it wasnt even close to being a dificult decisionPJ

I'm guessing by your screen name that this is a loaded question and you are here only to fight your point.
My problem with DMB (I've been to probably 10 of there shows, none in the past 3 years or so) is that there is no freakin' lead guitar. I mean would it hurt to throw in a guitar solo ever now and then? I get board with that sax and violin stuf song after song after song..
And fans wise? PJ. No contest."You would be punctilious in assuming that."0 -
sorry, i think dave has talent...but what is with that violin? i mean it actually takes the place of a lead guitarist...awfull!!!!
its like a hoe down...
i heard him doing all along the watchtower...with a 2 minute violin solo...if dylan was dead he would have been rolling in his grave...
i think dave needs a real band, add a guitarist..stop with the violin and trumpets and get into rock
it really sounds like crapIts My BLOOOOOOOOOOOD!0 -
The collective value of the lives of every single fratboy in the crowd of any given Dave Matthews concert still doesn't match the value of one note of Pearl Jam's worst song. I mean, good grief, what a dumb question.0

DMB can lick my big hairy, sweaty....back....
DMB arent in the same league as PJ by a mile
dont see the hype. gave them a shot, have three albums and while BTCS was good.....they have tons of repetive albums and i dont consider them a rock band, theyre a jam band.
the people have spoken Dave, and its not you they want.0 -
can't compare, they are apples and oranges...obviously depends on your taste in music and given that you're asking this on Pearl Jam's message pit....s

a very hard one.
obviously, matthews band has a deeper bench. no doubt at all that they control the rebound. BUT, and its a big but, on any given day stone can duck-walk you to death. add to this Jeff's incredible trash talk ability and all of a sudden the picture changes.
now, you'll probably say that the matthews band is in a great shape in the last few weeks, but you know, the statistics tend to straighten up. Pini Gershon always says that.
so, in my opinion,
pearl jam wins. unless matthews gets into the zone and starts making the 3-pointers.0 -
NO CONTEST !!0

But in no way does he compare as a song writer, and as a musician that's the ONLY category that really matters.0
