The age-old question. Who do you take? What version of Van Halen was best? Cabo Wabo Sammy Hagar or Diamond David Lee Roth? Curious what you guys think. I know there are a lot of VH fans out there in Pearl Jam land.

  • I enjoy both versions of VH, but Sammy all the way for me.
Dave's VH produced lots of great stuff of course, but, to me, he gave them a cartoonish, bafoonish even, quality which isn't what I look for a in rock band. Plus, he's an arrogant ass.

Absolutely David Lee Roth, the best songs were made in the first VH era, Runnin' With The Devil, Drop Dead Legs, Panama, etc. the high pitch this guy achieved is still a great complement for the energetic and explosives Eddie's riffs.

It's a shame the group was separated for so many years, but it looks that the last tour they made was pretty awesome. Does anybody have saw them in this last tour?

    David Lee Roth for me.

Having said that, one of my favorite VH songs is Why Can't This Be Love which was sung by Hagar.

Still taking DLR on this one.

David Lee Roth -- He's a pompous fuck, but I just like his material better.

But they're both equally fun to make fun of.
    The age-old question.

I believe the real age-old question is this: Ozzy Osbourne or Ronnie James Dio

I trust many of you know where my vote lies. \m/  \m/

I started the ball rolling, so I might as well tell ya my vote goes to DLR. Yes, he's a cartoon character. Yes, the band was more refined under Sammy, but when I think of VH, it's Dave. The guy is the essence of a self-absorbed rock star.

I have to say BOTH I saw VH on the The Women and Children First & 1984 tour twice and it was in my younger tom foolery days. Yes I was clownish way back and so was DLR. I then saw Hagar on the 5150 tour and a very good album and his frontman work was good also. 1022.gif

That said i did see David Lee Roth on his solo tour after leaving VH on April Fools Day 85'. I have to say that concert is easily in my top 15 of all time concert enjoyment. I didn't expect much from a free ticket but he kept surprising the sold out Capital Centre in MD all night long most of which had me standing throughtout. He does know how to entertain even though he comes off very corny at times.1022.gif

Van Halen has been my favorite band since I was 6 years old in 1978 and my older brother cranked VH on friggin 8 track. They are still my favorite band. Love all the albums with Roth and Hagar. Roth, however, wins this vote for me no question. Mean Street is my favorite song.
