Actually, security personnel in airports are also looking at passports, and the names therein often give an indication. It's certainly not definitive or foolproof, but it can assist. Now, while there are racists, bigots, etc. who mindlessly support profiling, one doesn't have to be a racist or a bigot to support profiling. Sure, if someone is saying search every Muslim, that is asinine and bigoted. It wouldn't make sense to single out a 55 year Muslim man, or a 12 year old Muslim boy, or any Muslim females. Why? Because they generally haven't been responsible for any of the hijackings or attempts to blow up planes over the last 35 years. It's primarily been Muslim males in their early 20s to late 30s. Some can cite McVeigh, Rudolph, the Unabomber and some others, but any rational person should see that they are an anomaly, in general, and certainly don't belong in any rebuttal concerning AIRLINE security. And Richard Reid is also an anomaly... isolated incidents don't warrant a profile. However, when it comes to hijacking or blowing up planes, there IS one demographic that is not simply an isolated incident. Again, it's not racist to focus on the obvious. If La Cosa Nostra was in the business of hijacking or blowing up planes, I wouldn't want 20-40 year Arab men or Italian grandmothers getting extra attention at the airports; I'd want Paulie Walnuts getting a pat down, though.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh... yeah. That's why they call it 'profiling'. Again, if I was looking for meth dealers in the 1980s, I was looking for white male bikers. Absolutely. And by no means can we assume the worst about everyone who fits a profile. Some of the finest people on this earth happen to love motorcycles and dressing the part. Doesn't make them meth dealers or otherwise bad folk. Profiling should only be for professional use, and isn't for the general public at large.

Anecdotally, shortly after Oklahoma City I was in Brooklyn with a friend and needed something from a convenience store. As I was going in, he said he wouldn't go there because the owner was an Arab and, "they just blew up the Murrah Federal Building." I shook my head and then gave him a ration of shit when I came out, saying that for all we knew it was some anti-government white supremacist. Literally hours later, it came out that it was McVeigh, who wasn't white supremacist, but was anti-government and certainly not an Arab. I get that we can't just mess with an entire race because of some bad apples within it, but giving some extra attention to 20-40 year old Muslim males before they get on a plane isn't a human rights travesty IMO.

How about looking at a name. How about looking at where they are coming from. Jesus Christ what kind of fucking world do we live in here. There is a terorists organization that is mostly made up of muslims and they want to kill us. Sorry but you blind ass fucking liberals don't have a clue. i agreed with your post until this part right here. you said we can't mess with an entire race because of a few bad apples, but giving extra attention a a smal group of that race is not going to make us safer. how good would you feel if a 41 or 19 year old muslim, or american, or nigerian, or brit, or aussie, or mexican, or peruvian blew up a plane? you either look at everyone more thoroughly or you change nothing.

Yeah, but at this point the use of women and children is still primarily taking place on the ground... there is not ample empirical evidence to create a profile for them when it comes to AIR TRAVEL, which is what I was discussing.

We're going to have to (hopefully) respectfully disagree on this point. I think you would be correct if we only used profiling, to the exclusion of random checks of people and heightened security, in general. However, I do believe that there is a place for profiling in the mix.

It would suck. But, at this point, it would be an anomaly, not the norm. Shit will always happen... there is no 100% effective way of handling security. However, even catching one episode is worth the extra effort, IMO.

Again, I don't feel that looking at everyone more thoroughly is mutually exclusive with profiling. I also don't think "changing nothing" is ever a good option, as the enemy needs to realize that things always are in flux and that they want to think twice about trying anything.

Yeah, I was angry at the time I wrote this. Probably should've cooled down before writing. I have no deep seeded issue with muslims, why would I? I don't even know any. And if I did know any they would be more than welcome in my home......as long as they didn't want to blow me up

Sorry if I offended anybody, I just get really angry sometimes because sometime something really bad will happen....probably a plane will get blown up, and more than likely with a little common sense it could have been prevented. I'll put it this way, if I was muslim I would want myself and other muslims checked before getting on a plane, it makes sense and it would make me feel safer, but I guess more people will have to die from Al Qaida attacks before anybody in this administration can see that. And just out of curiosity, you are all afraid of profiling or being labeled a racists...how would you suggest we make our air travel safer? Haven't heard any other ideas except for putting an x-ray machine at every terminal which will cost billions.
