Backspacer still floating your boat?

My cold stone cynical heart has been baking in the sun of this new album for a couple of weeks now, every day the puddle beneath it grows as the thaw continues. Initially the pulse had quickened and it was the songs Gonna See My Friend, Got Some, The Fixer, Johnny Guitar and Supersonic that pushed the red ice flows forwards, smashing and breaking, clearing a path. The sorrow and longing of Speed of Sound cracked it anew, rips and tears reopened to welcome the darkness devouring its beautiful honesty. The heat of love and light from Amongst The Waves and Force Of Nature dried the pool and slapped my heart with colours leaving it almost proper. Yet, a conflict remained seesawing emotions, the rise of Unthought Known and the fall of The End, extremes too strong to handle and too powerful to resist. I wondered if such a reconciliation would ever be possible, should parts of this album remain as mysterious to me as the sea? This morning it got through, that thumping kick drum, happy piano, epic echoing vocals, the sugary moonlight path was before me and I walked it with a pounding heart. This album is completely owning me at the moment.

Hows the new Alice in Chains album, I'm a bit worried it'll feel too weird having that replacement singer?

I havent heard it enough but Jerry seems to be the lead vocalist. He also sings similarly to how Layne did - maybe its the harmonising with William Duvall which gives that sound.

In general, the sound isnt much different to old AIC. Which makes me wonder about listening to new music which sounds like 1994 but in 2009!

I have seen them live 2 times in the last few years and will see them again in Dec. They were great the first 2 times and i'm sure they will be again. William Duvall is a great "front man" and I love hearing Jerry's guitar playing.

Saw them live with the replacement singer in 2007. That guy blows Layne out of the water. Hits everything just like him but without oversteping his bounds; he knows his place. He plays the guitar on the acoustic sets and sounds amazing with JC. If you get a chance to catch them live definitely do it! I dont like the single so I havent bought they new album. Cant help you there.

    Still lovin Backspacer.
How can it be Alice in chains without Layne Staley ? Why is it so hard for musicians to walk away from something that is no more, that goes for everyone from gnr to journey. Why must they feed on the brand that was built with other configurations. Just call it what it is, something different.
  • Love the album. But just for fun I listened to S/T and I realized (once again) how good that album was. Once the dust settles, I'm not sure which of the two most recent albums I will like the most.

Regarding AIC - Duvall is awesome, although I wouldnt say he blows Layne out of the water. That's absurd. He is however, a great replacement and fits in perfectly with the rest fo the band. I've seen them 4 times in the last few years and Cantrell gets better and better. The new album is extremely solid and the old AIC sounds comes through for sure. Private Hell is probably the best song on the album (think Down in a Hole) but there are many others that kick ass.
