See, I think that's bullshit. I htink you have ot hot at least 1 of them and then try some of the others if you wanna see the difference. If you're a Philly local I can understand it since I assume you've already tried it, right?

Thats fine, go try Pats or Geno's and then go to another place and see the difference. Im just basing my opinion on personal experience.

Yeah, I didn't mean for my post to sound harsh. Sorry if it did. I just meant that it's ok to do the touristy thing in a new city sometimes.

can any of you guys who visit these places frequently see if you can solicit a gift card or 3? I have reached out to many of these named places trying to get us some gift cards for raffle prizes to our 3 Philly Spectrum Wishlist fund-raisers and no one has responded. Maybe in person with cash in your hand works better? PM me if you can help. Thanks!

I would like to quickly interupt this debate that is making me starving and lunch is still almost 2 hours away with the aforementioned request!!

You're probably thinking of Lozaro's on South Street - one component of the South Street Taco.

Also, when you go to JRP, make sure to get there before 3pm because they close early.

a lot of people say that it's for tourists and not the real deal.

Agreed that tourists end up there, but I think it became a tourist trap for a reason-- it's damn good. And I can't guarantee this, but I'd guess that Pat's is part of the reason why Philly is known for the cheesesteak. Pat's didn't pop-up as a "Philly Cheesesteak" place to cash in on the phenomena, Pat's was part of the reason why the phenomena happened in the first place.
All I can say is go there at about 2:30 am after having 6 or 7 beers and thank me later

Pat's was good when I was growing up and the steaks were like $3.50. Twenty years later, the price has doubled and the quality is no where near as good as it used to be.

John's was good but the only time I've gotten one there, I had to wait 2 hours in a very slow moving line that wasn't that far out the door. Won't be going back because of that.

I prefer Jim's and Campo's but I like Geno's/Pat's for a quick stop before I leave the city.

I couldnt believe how much business those 2 joints were doing when i went there.....

Hundreds of people waiting in line.....

For what was possibly the worst sandwich i have ever eaten....Its amazing how those 2 places are making gazillions of dollars......selling crap on a bun......

There was some joint selling cheesesteaks about 6-8 blocks from our hotel.....I dont remember the name...

But I am going to try their sandwich.....

Because when I walked by that place......The fucking smell of those cheesesteaks was just fucking incredible...

The name of the place will come to me sooner or later....
    Take me piece by piece.....
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....

That's what we mean by tourist traps. Those places can't keep up with the demand in line compared to how the sandwich should be, so they know people are there for the "experience" so they give them barely any meat slapped on a roll. The best time to go to Pat's is during the week after lunch time....or at 6 am on a ride back from an AC trip and they need to turn on the burners for you and prepare your sandwich special since you're the only customer.

I can't believe they put cheese whiz on their steaks....that's just wrong

    It's a cheesesteak, not a steak sandwich, Indiana. ;)

I personally go with the mushroom three cheese(whiz, provolone, and american - also called the heart attack) wit.

John's was good but the only time I've gotten one there, I had to wait 2 hours in a very slow moving line that wasn't that far out the door. Won't be going back because of that.

I prefer Jim's and Campo's but I like Geno's/Pat's for a quick stop before I leave the city.

holy fuck! 2 hours...there ain't a cheese steak on earth i'd wait 2 hours for!!

Agreed. It was fourth of July weekend but it didn't seem like that bad a line, just moved really really slow. Once we waited a bit we kind of felt obligated to stay in it, since it took like and hour 15 before we even got in the door. The cheesesteak was good, but the 10 minute wait at Campo's the next day was much better :D

    I still swear by Pat's

As someone who lives two blocks from Pat's and Geno's, you'll never see me there unless one of my out of town friends is visiting and specifically asks to go there.

There are so many better cheesesteak places than those two tourist traps.

    Jim's?
    Nice shirt.

    Jim's.....

I am almost positive it was Jim's....

The guy is standing in the window with about 5-10lbs. of steak cooking on the grill??????

I walked by that place late night.....and I couldnt believe how good that food smelled....
    Take me piece by piece.....

I would never ever ever ever eat a cheesesteak outside of the Philly area unless the proprietor is from the Philly area.

I married a Philly girl, and in three years, she, nor anyone in her family has taken me to Pat's or Geno's. Obvious how they feel about those places. I've been to Jim's a number of times, and they're great, but it is a tourist spot, and the lines are usually pretty long. There was another, hole-in-the-wall, place right down South Street from Jim's, called Ishkabibble (not kidding). It was really good, too. My wife is a big fan of the pork sandwhiches, too, that many have mentioned already.

It just doesn't taste the same outside of the Philly area. I know the ingredients are the same. It's just something intangible.

There used to be an Ishkabibble right across the street from Pat's and Geno's and when my tourist friends would go there, I would go there instead. Not the greatest steak, but much better than Pat's or Geno's.
