I agree which is why I go there when people are visiting the city the first time. Luckily in October, one of my friends who is staying with me for the PJ shows is a vegan so I won't be going anywhere near there.- Busted down the pretext

WTF is wrong with you people?
Nothing is wrong with us people...I prefer Johns
In all fairness I've only had the roast pork from John's so I can't disagree with you on the cheesesteaks. I was just surprised that we were on page 4 and no one had mentioned Dalessandro's yet.
Unfortunately I live in NYC now so that means no good cheesesteaks anywhere :(0 -
tony luke's or geno's. tony luke's is usually voted "best of philly" geno's and pat's will give you a more authentic experience, however. i say try 'em all.....and put the hot peppers on them.
then when you're ready for a real cheesesteak....randy's in williamstown, nj0 -

Penn Station is awesome!!!hippiemom = goodness0 -
Something else to try, Dinic's hot pork sandwich in Reading Terminal Market. Awesome.
Someone mentioned the rolls in the Philly area, what's their name? Amarosa, or something like that?0 -
You guys are on the right track there with Johns. Solid eats. Pats (wiz wit) is a great drunk steak at 3am, but not truely Philly's finest.
Philly's other sandwiches are just as great as a cheesesteak and also not matched anywhere else in the States. No one has mentioned my top two places in the city.
SHANK AND EVELYN'S - Insanely good sandwiches, I get the roast pork combo wet with the broccoli rabe and sweet peppers, then douse it in crystal. Everything there is good down to their breakfast sandwiches. Place is run by a bunch of ladies, order correctly and try not to look too much like a tourist or you will get sh*t for it.
GEORGES - Great tiny place in the Italian Market, just off 7th and Christian. Recently redone, but it is still a dive place. Might be 7 bar stools in the entire place. Everything is great there, including the cheesesteaks. My favorite is the Sauteed ground veal, sharp prove, hot seed, and hot pep. Mark, the proprieter, makes the best sanwhiches in the city as far as im concerned.
Honorable mention goes to Nick's Roast Beef on 20th and Jackson for having a belly busting Roast Beef Combo and gravy fries to die for.
Im in for 10.31, hoping it can top the 10.3.05.0 -
That's it. I had enough - I'm going up the street for lunch to Primo's for a mild sharp Italian.0

if you wait an hour and a half you might be able to catch the first few innings of the phils as they sweep the crappy cubs. cliff lee today, lock it up0 -

Yeah, I know. Got a meeting at 2. Another start by the General that I'm gonna miss because of stupid day games. Alright, getting annoyed - need to feed the need.0 -
I actually had one from Fishtown Pizza recently that was out of this world. But I get mine, sans the cheese, I don't like cheese so I probably shouldn't even be contributing to this discussion
But I am a fan of Jim's as wellDon't come closer or I'll have to go0 -
I like Tony Lukes the best .....Plus it's right down the street from the spectrum....We usually stop there on the way to tailgate for games and shows....all the cheese and steak allows you to party longer in the lots!
edit: American whiz without0 -

I'll have to respectfully disagree with some of this...
don't go to Pat's or Geno's...they are tourist traps and the sandwiches there are subpar (compared to the other options).
I think Jim's on South Street has the best cheesesteaks in the city...
tony luke's has great steaks as well, but their best sandwich is the hot roast pork. This is located near the stadium complex and I make a point to hit tony luke's early before games/concerts to pick up a sandwich to bring to parking lot for the tailgate.
There are tons of places to get a 'philly cheesesteak'...I would strongly recommend not hitting geno's/pat's, unless you just want to say you were there.
Agree...Walks on his own... With thoughts he can't help thinking...0 -
For those staying at the Radisson with the PJ discount there is a Tony Luke Jr's right by the hotel. I went there when i lived in philly like 7 years ago. Never actually went to the real Tony Luke's. Anyone if Philly know if Jr's is as good as Sr's?

John's Roast Pork blows anyone away. The problem is you need to get there by 2-3pm on a weekday to get one. If you can't go there, go to the Tony Luke's on Front/Oregon. Pats/Genos/Jims is only good if its latenight and you're drunk.
