PJ becoming an elitist band?

I don't think the band is elitist at all. I do however think a number of people around here and at the shows are. Particularly those with low numbers always in the front rows. And just look at the multiple "Eddie Concert Etiquette" threads.

asking for people to be respectful at the Ed shows and pipe down so everyone can hear what he's saying/singing in an intimate setting isn't elitist, it's courteous.

I love that the creator of the thread is complaining about having to travel, but the location in their info says Austin...where PJ are playing a show this year. What am I missing?

Anyway, I love Pearl Jam and will happily travel to see them when I have the money. When I don't, I won't hold it against them if they don't play in my neighborhood...I can always pick up boots, crank up the stereo and imagine the scene to match the sounds of the show.

    We are some lucky MFers!

I don't think they are being elitist. I think they are expecting that people who don't live nearby won't go.
  • I think the fucking fans are the ones becoming elitist!! I f they don't play a hop skip & a jump from peoples houses then they wanna talk shit and moan and cry!

First of all...you know dam well that these are not going to be the only US tour dates to support a new album...they will take some time off after this little stint and then they will be back on the road and touring the south as they all said they were going to and then the North East will get some shows...how do i know this..easy...past experience..i know this band!!

sometimes we are quick to scream foul play when we are upset and we let our emotions get in the way of our rational thinking...i have been guilty of this myself...live and learn!.

I'm from Boston one of their biggest markets...i have no doubt in my mind that they will be here sometime in the next year or so...but for now...thank God i am fortunate enough to go to Philly!!!

hang in there OP..they will be around your way sooner or later!!

by performing shows ONLY in large metropolitan areas (with the exception of the festival shows) and forcing fans to fly to those cities from everywhere? Just curious as to what everyone has to say.

Aside from losing the awesome experience of doing road trips to several concerts as someone pointed out on another thread, this is an odd time with the economy being what it is to ask everyone to fork over money to fly. Philly reps the East, Chicago reps the Midwest and LA reps the West. With the "no plans for shows in 2010 statement", I'm really feeling left out. With the exception of ACL, where they'll probably play for an hour, I'm not able to see any of the concert shows because I haven't had a full-time job in 17 months.

    What does everyone think?

I hate to be rude but...

Maybe find a job between now and then so you can save up some money to go to the shows that are being played. I really don't see why it's PJ fault or how they are being "elitist" by not playing in your backyard. They are not forcing you to do anything. If you can't afford to go to the shows then you can't go.....simple as that.

They're not forcing you to fly anywhere. Maybe drive a bit longer, but not fly.

I do think it's annoying when they only play the same major markets over and over again when they won't hit up other markets but such is life.

It sucks, but it's part of life. I've saved up some money and hopefully will be making it either Toronto or Philly.

+1.. The band are not obligated to play where the fans want them - though it may be a financially wise decision. That said, they're selling out the shows they've booked, so what's the problem? To quote a wise TV character pretending to be a female prostitute on the Maury Povich show, "Whateva, I do what I want!"

There is a difference between asking nicely and telling people how to act. There were a few people trying to tell people how to act.

My guess is that's because those who try and ask nicely are generally ignored.

Its also funny and sad how you always see people in america complain. You never ever see people in south america or asia or people in non major canadian cities complain.

Austin has very strict rules regarding live music and how late it can go - which apply even to ACL.

Okay, you are either not really from Austin or you are just clueless, first no headliner ever plays the ACL Fest. and only plays an hour!! That is just a stupid ass statement, last year Foo Fighters play 30 mins. over!! Second of all the "very strict rules regarding live music and how late it can go - which apply even to ACL" is also a bogus statement, the strict rules you speak of that are going on in Austin right now are about the noise levels at area clubs and restaurants NOT at the ACL fest. Everyone knows that the "noise police" are not going to be at ACL,

Just the fact that you think they are going to play an hour at ACL is enough to make me think you don't really live in Austin, you just moved here or that you have NO CLUE about the music scene in Austin. As far as Pearl Jam and the way they do their tours, after 2003 they do tours how they want to do them now, I'm used to it by now. Do I like it, no, but it's not going to change anything. If people think that it's bad, I saw Grateful Dead over 150 times and this is what their fall tour looked like almost every year towards the end.

    Philly 4 shows.
    Landover, Maryland 4 shows.
    New York, N.Y 6 or 9 shows.
    Boston 6 shows.

Yes that would be the whole tour about 20 or 23 shows in 4 cities, makes things a lot easier, what I don't like about this new tour announcement is that there aren't many weekend shows, but who am I to complain, they are playing in Austin so I get to see them here. I will enjoy the show here, I can't really travel to see them this year anyway, so it works out great for me, I also just saw Phish 3 shows in June for my birthday, it was quick and EASY, flew into Chicago, drove to Deercreek for 1 show, drove to Alpine Valley for 2 shows and flew out of Chicago on Monday morning, no fuss no muss, all my tickets were $55.00 and they announced all the shows at once, what a concept!

i think the term 'elitist' is over-utilized on this board. that said, no, i don't think they are elitist, nor do i think it is an elitist move on their part. right now, it's a small tour, just a kick-off. i think smaller markets WILL see shows in the coming year in full support of their new album. that said, i think the band is simply being strategic, balancing their lives, trying to still reward their fans, but you bet...doing what they have always done - doing things on their terms. the band, like many, are at a point in their lives where they have young families. they also are at a point of (more than likely) damn fine financial success. of course one caqnnot know with certainty, but i still feel pretty secure in assuming that if they wanted to never put out another album or tour again, they all could still manage damn comfortable lives. they continue to make music and put on live shows b/c they WANT to. however, they also want to see their families. i think ANY one of us would do the same....try to find the BALANCE that works for us. beyond that.....they play these large metropolitan areas simply b/c they ARE large, meaning - LOTs of fans in a given area. if you're only going to do a couple of shows...doesn't it make sense to go to areas with significant populations of your fans? that's not elitist, that's just common sense. beyond that...i do believe they'll spread the love around, later.
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...
