WICHITA - George Tiller, the Wichita doctor who became a national lightning rod in the debate over abortion, was shot to death this morning as he walked into church services.
Tiller, 67, was shot just after 10 a.m. at Reformation Lutheran Church at 7601 E. 13th, where he was a member of the congregation. Witnesses and a police source confirmed Tiller was the victim.
No information has been released about whether a suspect is in custody.
Homicide detectives and Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston have arrived at the church.
Members of the congregation who were inside the sanctuary at the time of the shooting were being kept inside the church by police, and those arriving were being ushered into the parking lot. Witnesses are being transported downtown for interviews and other members of the congregation are slowly being released from inside the sanctuary.
Tiller has long been a focal point of protest by abortion opponents because his clinic, Women's Health Care Services at 5701 E. Kellogg, is one of the few in the country where late-term abortions are performed.
Protesters blockaded Tiller's clinic during Operation Rescue's "Summer of Mercy" protests during the summer of 1991, and Tiller was shot by Rachelle Shannon at his clinic in 1993.
Tiller was wounded in both arms, and Shannon remains in prison for the shooting.
Tiller's clinic was severely vandalized earlier this month. According to the Associated Press, his lawyer said wires to security cameras and outdoor lights were cut and that the vandals also cut through the roof and plugged the buildings' downspouts. Rain poured through the roof and caused thousands of dollars of damage in the clinic. Tiller reportedly asked the FBI to investigate the incident.
Sgt. Bart Brunscheen of the Wichita Police Department said there has been no activitiy today at Tiller's clinic, although security crews were being brought in to make sure the building was secure. Officials also were going to check the clinic's security cameras to see if there was any activity over night.
Tiller and his clinic have faced continuous threats and lawsuits. A Wichita jury ruled in March that he was not guilty of illegal abortion on 19 criminal charges he faced for allegedly violating a state law requiring an "independent" second physician's concurring opinion before performing later term abortions. Immediately following the ruling in this criminal case, the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts made public a similar complaint against Tiller that was originally filed in December 2008. Tiller's medical license could eventually be suspended or revoked by the board on the basis of the complaint.

I had a feeling this was going to happen sooner or later. I dont agree with what happened to him but at the same time I dont feel sorry for him. This man was a sicko how could any one live with them selves let alone even sleep at night. why would any one want to perform late term abortions0

I wouldn't say he deserved it. Not by any stretch of the imagination. But he was openly flaunting the fact that he was doing late term abortions in a VERY red state filled with armed and psychotic Christians. The guy's basically had a target painted on his back for the past 20 years or so.Rock me Jesus, roll me Lord...

Either life begins at conception, or it begins at birth. I've never really understood what makes late term abortions "special"Rock me Jesus, roll me Lord...

I know its a legal procedure still doesn't make it right though, why dont go look at some pics of a late term abortion and then tell me how you feel. I would post a link on here but I'd probably get banned. Like I said I dont agree with the man getting gunned down in his church but at the same time it's really hard for me to feel sorry for him. He didnt get the name Tiller the baby killer for nothin :twisted:0 -

Did you know him personally? If not, then you have no right to judge that he was a sicko. I know many people who did know him personally, and they all have said that he was a soft-spoken, kind, compassionate man.
You may not understand why anyone would perform late term abortions and you may not agree with them, but it needs to be recognized that Dr. Tiller performed them - and dealt every day with the reality of the pictures you would post and the target on his back - out of compassion for the women who required those services (and oftentimes for the babies he aborted), NOT out of hatred, cruelty, or sicko-ness.0 -
I hope Pearl Jam performs Porch tomorrow in response to this. No matter what side you're on, murder is murder and cannot be justified. It's nice to be nice to the nice.0

Killing in the name of ending abortions? Wow...
No matter which way one believes, killing someone because they do not believe as you do, and others rejoicing over it, kind of reminds one of the radical Islamists when they rejoice over the killing, toture or beheading of someone from another faith, ethnicity or country.

do you know that all those late term abortions were "required" ? I'm pro-choice (I think), but I have no compassion for a Dr who knowingly performs late term abortions.0 -

Who's rejoicing, as far as we know this guy could have shot him for something else. Highly unlikely but you never know. Most Pro lifers are exactly what they stand for. Life. and they don't condone what happened to him,but of course pro choice groups won't see it that way and the media won't let us see it that way0 -
well since it is all over our news........i live in wichita, no one is rejoicing. the interviews that have been conducted, people state their views that they did not agree with abortion but he did not deserve to be shot either.
tiller drove an armored vehicle, he had security at all times except at church. it is my opinion that the person who killed him had been stalking him for sometime and found the hole in his pattern. i could be wrong though.live and let live...unless it violates the pearligious doctrine.0 -

Yes. If not, it would have been illegal for him to do them, per Kansas abortion law:
65-6703
Chapter 65.--PUBLIC HEALTH
Article 67.--ABORTION
65-6703. Abortion prohibited when fetus viable, exceptions; determination of age of fetus; determination of viability; reports; retention of medical records; viable, defined; criminal penalties. (a) No person shall perform or induce an abortion when the fetus is viable unless such person is a physician and has a documented referral from another physician not legally or financially affiliated with the physician performing or inducing the abortion and both physicians determine that: (1) The abortion is necessary to preserve the life of the pregnant woman; or (2) a continuation of the pregnancy will cause a substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function of the pregnant woman.jlew24asu wrote:I'm pro-choice (I think), but I have no compassion for a Dr who knowingly performs late term abortions.
Why? Do you understand any of the medical and emotional reality behind late term abortions or do you just buy into the sensationalized propaganda when making the judgement that they should never be performed? These abortions are extremely rare, but there are sometimes needed. The women who need them deserve to have the best possible care, from the most skilled and compassionate physicians.
This is a big deal in part because Dr. Tiller was one of only two or three docs in the country who performs these procedures. Who is left to serve and protect these women and their families now? I know of only ONE other doc in the whole country who has stepped up to fill this need, and his bedside manner is... lacking. The access to and quality of care for women in the United States has just suffered a HUGE loss.0 -

Reality check to right wind nut jobs- Like it or not, Abortion is legal. Deal with it other than killing people.0
