RICE not getting in probably has more to do with attitude towards press than his actuall stats ,i've heard that on sports talk radio and then again maybe not ..who knows but it seems someone has a bug up their ass about him ....
his playing was before my time...but he seems like a nice fella during his commentary on NESN.

He basically would not talk to reporters during most of his playing days, so many now are exercising their revenge...quite petty.
    This weekend we rock Portland

If they let Sandberg in they should let Andre Dawson in as well.
Dawson had better numbers and was a multi-gold glove winner.

look at these numbers and explain why this man isn't in the Hall

smh @ bitter sports writers. isn't part of journalism to be objective, holding a grudge against a player who refuses to talk for 10+ years is a bit bias don't you think? They should just look at his numbers and era, instead of his personality.

Yeah but same can be said for Robby Alomar who played longer than Sandberg
I'm not sure I could put Alomar in there

I can't think of anyone better than Dawson either in the OF during the same era and there are 3 times as many OF'ers....Eddie Murray? Dave Winfield??
Henderson??? Dawson had more gold gloves and as good of numbers as all these guys

Eddie Murray didn't play the OF.

I would probably take Rickey Henderson, Tim Raines, Dale Murphy, Kirby Puckett, Dwight Evans, Tony Gwynn, Jim Rice.

Dawson had a lower OPS than Raines for his career and he was a slugger and Raines was a leadoff hitter for the most part.

Well he has a .298 career average.
    He was MVP in 1978.
77-79 he hit 39, 46 and 39 Hrs when 20 hrs was a big power season and hit .320, .315 and .325 those same years He was the AL's most feared hitter from 1976-1983.
Eye problems cut his carer short, today lasix surgery would have extended his career a couple o fseasons and 400 Hr's would have been a lock.

I agree he had a good run during those years, but five or six great seasons is not enough to get into the hall of fame without something more. And we know that all-star status does not mean much in HOF terms. Like I said, great player for a long time, a borderline hall of famer, at best.

Jim Rice got 161 more votes than Tim Raines and Alan Trammell combined. Tim Raines alone should have garnered more votes than Rice.

If you answer yes, then you should Jayson Stark's article, and then you should agree that Goose belongs.

True, but he did hit .336/.386/.661 at Yankee Stadium which is probably why Red Sox Nation is so fond of him.

I think Dawson, Rice AND Murphy should be in. offensive explosions have destryed people's thinking. These 3 men were feared more than any other in their days.

Plus dont give me that Championship BS, post season performance can enhance a career, but it certainly does not define it. I mean baseball is a sport where you need the other 24 guys playing well and a competent manager.

Possibly. But that just means their perception of him is skewed, just like some Yankee fans irrationally thought they would be better if they parted with the best player on their team.

Murphy had 5 in 5 years while winning back to back MVPs. Dawson by my recollection only won one MVP for a team that came in last, while Murphy won his by winning a division and coming in 2nd.

I think a big issue is that he pitched mostly one inning saves and the fact that Hoffman has the record now and the fact that his number of saves will be passed by Rivera as well hurts him.

Sutter, Gossage and Fingers all averaged over 100 IPs a year while Smith only averaged 85. He was seen as more of a one inning specialist. And starting with his era that one inning closer came into fashion.

I mean Randy Myers, Tom Henke, John Wettleland, Roberto Hernandez, Jose Mesa, Robb Nen, Rick Aguilara, Troy Percival and soon Todd Jones, Armando Benitez, Jason Isringhausen and Bob Wickman will all have more saves than Gossage and Sutter for their careers. But does anyone really think any of them are better than Sutter and Gossage?
