310 saves is not much but many were of the three-inning variety, which takes three guys these days not to screw up (more often than not they do).

i realize for 8-10 years he was a hell of a closer......

but the hall of fame in my opinion should only be for the elite.....the best of the best....

    not the really fucking good.....

valid point, but is 8-10 years of being a hell of a closer considered elite? i consider it elite, especially in that era before some schmuck was called the seventh-inning guy and the eighth-inning guy.

    absolutley.....

eck won over 150 games as a starter.....

and he was the best closer to walk the planet for 8-10 years.....

390 saves in 10 years as a closer??? FUCK!!!!

baseball is a game of numbers.....and eckersley blows gossage away.....

I think only 1 player getting in this year is crazy. 2 owners, 2 managers, and a former commish, and only 1 player.

I think Goose got his due, but I also think Jim Rice should be there as well.
I love to turn you on

just checking....i wanted to gauge who you think belongs in the hall......as for goose, i'm either way on him....he's in fine.....the only problem is that the bar has been lowered so we might see more players like him get in....

    thats just it....

    has the bar been lowered????

the hall should just be for the ELITE!!!!

if nobody gets voted in for a few years......then so be it...

dont lower the standards just to elect someone....

Jim's numbers are borderline and the votes reflect

pretty sure he never was a batting champ and has never won a championship
even though he was a very good player for a very long time, .280 hitters dont get to the hall without something more.

by the way Im a sox fan, but he had less than 3000 hits, less than .300 avg, 90 RBI avg., and less than 400 home runs.
Of course you could look at the converse, more than 2400 hits, etc..
But quite simply not HOF numbers

GOOSE helped establish the relievers role in Baseball and was one of the most dominant for a long time.

Like he said "can you imagine how many more games I could have saved if I only had to pitch one inning? People say Mariano Rivera is the best of all time. I take issue with that."

and I dont think thats enough for the HOF, especially on a team that did not win a championship

The Boston papers recently had a bunch of articles and columns pleading for Jim Rice's voters to get him in the Hall. I think it was in one of Bob Ryan's column awhile back, saying that with all the steroid scandals, Rice's election into the Hall had a great chance in '08. Apparently not yet :(

by the way, isn't there a 15-year limit after a player's retirement to get in the Hall?

Last year is the last time before the Veteran's comm. He deserves to be in as he was as dominant as they come during his peak 10 year period.

RICE not getting in probably has more to do with attitude towards press than his actuall stats ,i've heard that on sports talk radio and then again maybe not ..who knows but it seems someone has a bug up their ass about him ....

Yep, one MVP and 5 other top 5 in the MVP voting in 10 years is pretty dominant. Plus 3 home run titles and 2 rbi titles.

I like the fact in 1978, he just missed the triple crown finishing 3rd in batting, first in homers and rbis, but more impressively, he also finished first in triples. What slugger ever leads the league in triples?

Well he has a .298 career average.
    He was MVP in 1978.
77-79 he hit 39, 46 and 39 Hrs when 20 hrs was a big power season and hit .320, .315 and .325 those same years He was the AL's most feared hitter from 1976-1983.
Eye problems cut his carer short, today lasix surgery would have extended his career a couple o fseasons and 400 Hr's would have been a lock.
    This weekend we rock Portland
