From your previous post it looks like that is what you think?

    It is what I think.
Sorry to confuse you...it's a little standing joke here that I am the only person in the Pearl Jam universe that thinks Fight Club sucks the big one......
    go ahead, destroy me.

no, it's about guys meeting in a car park to have a fight.
Where I came from people fought like fuck, mostly on a Saturday night afer the pubs closed, they beat up each other, coppers, passers by...it was disgusting, but it was 'aggressive tendencies', as you say, finding an outlet. I don't buy that that stuff can be 'bottled' and used when and as you like.

You say potatoe, I say potato...you say cinematic visionary, I say load of fancy old bollocks.
It's not about guys meeting in a car park to have a fight. I don't think it's visionary at all, I think it's a really obvious comment on something that most people could identify with. I don't rate the film itself that much beyond the two main performances, I love Norton and I thought Pitt was great in it. I'm much more a fan of the book because it's the concept I thought was well done. It's not about fighting people in car parks, it's about kicking the shit out of someone because you can't kick the shit out of yourself. It's not great art, it's just venting. Everyone has to do that, right? :) It's about ordinary people not having an outlet and then when they find one, they realise it's immature to expect to be able to do it for life. The whole second half of the film is for people like you who don't sympathise with the narrator, when it goes too far and it all goes to shit for him. When he has to live in the real world.

There's nothing particularly big or clever about it, it's just ordinary people trying and failing to find a way to cope with themselves. I just happen to quite like it. I don't think it's particularly profound or anything :o

Yes I did. Because you put me up to saying it, and I knew...and suspect you also had a fair idea, what was gonna come my way :p which is a shit storm of pompous art wank, fancy, fanny film fans, wanting to tell me what a fecking moron I am :p
I don't think you are a moron and I don't like it for dumb artsy fartsy reasons. I don't even find it to be that much of a cinematic stretch. I just love it is all.
Helena B Carter, Brad Pitt and Ed Norton are hysterical in it.
And the costumes and sets are to die for. :)

  • A History of Violence - that movie was a hot mess. I can't believe it was nominated for anything. I cringed through the whole thing.

What I don't get is why everyone who doesn't like Fight Club assumes that those who do think it is "deep".

I know that. I can read. What I'm asking is "Why do you think that every person who likes Fight Club is the same. Why do you think we all think it's deep?"

I can't buy that it's ordinary people :( sorry, it's just Hollywood tosh, and it is about fighting in car parks...which never ever happened btw, if it was set 200 years ago in Wales.....no, even then people only fought if they had an argument, or for prize money.
Sorry guys, I aint having this profoundity at all.
A film about real life....Twin Town, there, I relate to that, but not fancy bankers or whatever saying...."hey guys, listen, keep this a secret okay...our little secret.....listen, we come here and have a fight...! oh yeah...a fight...you heard me, it relieves all you stresses...oh boy.....a fight...goody goody, a fight "
    sorry...not buying it :o

I just said it's NOT profound, and it's not supposed to be Hollywood either. It's a book by Chuck Palahniuk. He's one of these nihilistic, anti-consumerist guys. That's why the character has a nice job etc. He has to. Some guy working on a shipping yard is supposed to hate his life. In Fight Club, the narrator has a nice job, a nice Ikea house and he's not satisfied. That's believable right? Having financial security isn't a passport to eternal contentment. Why is it so unbelievable that he might have a fight with a friend in the car park of a pub while hammered one night just because they're bored with everything else they do and they've never done it before?

God knows I've felt like it sometimes.

What I want to know is, why is this bit of dramatic license for the sake of a film any more reprehensible and full of shite than Saving Private Fucking Ryan? :D

    go ahead, destroy me.

The fighting is symbolic of people wanting to re-connect with what it is to be a human being in the purest sense of the word - eschewing all the commercialised bull shit that we surround ourselves with and how we create our own little universe through consumerism and stuff. Like the fact we are all chatting away with each other via the internet, rather than actually being out there talking to a person face to face and experiencing the world. Fighting is generally regarded as a primal action thus it serves its purpose within the film. Kind of like how people self harm so they can feel something - anything.

"You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your fucking khakis"

I think about the above quote quite a lot actually, because it's all too easy to define yourself by the things you own and surround yourself with, yet at the end of the day you are nothing more than a human being, the same as anyone else. I dunno, maybe that's all 'artsy fartsy wank' to you, but to me it's pretty much the basis for any existential dilemma going.

i think that's another movie in a whole other genre. thankfully one tom hanks is absent from *vomit*
