Saving Private Ryan.
The first section, at Normandy, is probably one of the greatest movie scenes ever, although it was done before, and as well (with a better cast. I'll take John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Henry Fonda and Sean Connery over Tom Hanks any day thanks), in The Longest Day.
The rest is some shitty, overblown, unrealistic Hollywood melodrama that is INSULTING to those who actually experienced the time in question."I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0 -

It's just that, I don't mind sentimental, patriotic crap or whatever, I just don't like it masquerading as historical drama. I don't mind Hollywood cheese, as long as it doesn't try to make it seem sincere by tacking it onto the back of some half-formed idea of historical documentary. I feel like the filmmakers are saying "here is some really important stuff that happened once upon a time, but you are just a normal cinema goer, what you really want is love triangles and stories of dead family members". I like easy-going, sentimental movies as much as anyone, I just don't like massive blockbusters that make out like they're huge war epics when they're just the same old love triangle as a million other films or just a film about sending a kid home because his brothers died. I'm sure they had other things to worry about in WWII than how upset Mrs Ryan might be if her other son caught a bullet over in France

How can you "hate" Saving Private Ryan?? That blows my mind. The Longest Day is awesome, I'll give you that, but Saving Private Ryan was also a great film. I don't think Spielberg ever claimed it to the God honest truth or anything. I'll tell you this, when I saw it in the theater, two older gentlemen with their WWII jacket and hats sat behind me. I heard them balling throughout the movie and smelled the whiskey on them we walked out. I'm pretty sure they weren't insulted.0 -

I know that dude, but I thought it captured something all the same. There were some intense moments along the way, in fact the first time I smelled cheese was when Ted Danson appeared...and that was nearly the end
