oh and I'm a Christian just so you don't assume I'm an atheist.
Yes that link appears to be an official document and not some cooked up internet POS!
To your other point I agree - anyone thinks that the Pope is God on Earth needs to be institutionalized! I'm Catholic and love PJ and completely understand Ed's view against organized religion, not that it affects my practicing, to each his own.Raleigh '03; Hartford '08; Mansfield II '08; Buffalo '10; Hartford '10;East Troy I '11; East Troy II '11; DeLuna Fest '12; Wrigley '13; Buffalo '13;Toronto II '16; Wrigley I '16; Wrigley II '16; Wrigley I '18; Wrigley II '18;

Not orthodox, but I do pray to a piece of Vedder driftwood. It looked just like him. Had to be heaven sent.0 -
Interesting replies...
Yes, I am catholic and am a huge Pearl Jam fan.
While, I'd consider myself very spiritual, and not that religious, Catholicism is just the best vehicle for me. I agree with some things the church says, but I'm certainly very much against many of the Catholic Church's antiquated stances on others. Just the same, I agree with many of Ed/PJ's stances and don't agree with others.
I see God present in many places - and yes, I've even shared at Catholic retreats that I feel God in Pearl Jam concerts (maybe just the feeling of bliss, like your on a higher plane or something gives that feeling). Also, I know not everyone agrees, but lyrics can mean different things to different people & to me, Given to Fly has a very positive spiritual message.
but actually, I'm right on with Ed's opinion of religion - many times religions are a problem, and while my faith is strong, I totally believe in the message of Marker in the sand. Whatever anyone believes is fine and they sure don't need to fight over who's God is better.
What's important is people open their minds to others views and perspectives and share their love with others in the world.0 -

Im Catholic
I dont think Ed is against belief in God, just organized religion. But either way soesnt have anything to do with what I believe in0 -
I was raised Catholic. I went to 12 years of Catholic school. When it was time for Comfirmation I was the only one to not participate. I too was an altar boy and unmolested. It seemed to me that Catholic were very hippocrytical(?) I've been exposed to many other forms of christianity since(it was in the 70s) and still find most followers of organized religion to be so. It has made me a skeptic. I believe in a higher power but don't believe it wants our "worship."
BTW I think EV is mostly full of shit too!#FHP0 -
i'm catholic. everyone has a different path in life that eventually leads all of us to a similar ending. death! our free will determines our eternal fate. heaven or hell.
i'm cool with everyone having different opinions.eddie may or may not currently have a different view but we all face the same ending. my path as a catholic is different than other catholics i like my bowls and 4/20 @4:20 is around da corner0 -

I'm Catholic and I take everything Ed says with a grain of salt.
There's a lot of Catholics on here. There was a pretty big Ash Wednesday thread on AET awhile back and everyone was listing what they were giving up for Lent.- Busted down the pretext

one other thing while i get my buzz on b4 crashing. a little trivia 4 all who don't know
who started da catholic church?
da answer is Peter. peter was one of da main apostles to jesus back in da day. as far as i know none of the other apostles started another church
one thing i don't understand is why people who dislike/hate/or leave the catholic church. i've done more wrong than most people in here. i'm open minded enough to realize their is good in most religions.0 -
Indifference wrote:I think you meant to say "he is actually way off base on many of his views WHEN COMPARED TO MINE."
I'm a baptist and a hugh Pearl Jam fan.
I feel that it's Eddie that thinks people are way off base when their views are different from his. At just about every concert I've been to, he has thanked the audience for having a conversation, even though it was a one way street conversation. Anytime he has encouraged fans to "get out and vote", it was after 20 anti-Bush rants throughout the concert. If I were to get up on stage with him and debate Bush and religion, I'm sure he would say I'm way off base because I don't agree with him.
I'm not trying to bash Ed. He's got his opinions, and I got mine. I just think he shouldn't assume everyone at the concert shares his opinions.
Like someone posted earlier: Baptist is my religion, Pearl Jam is my music.
There are some songs of PJ I really love and can relate to, and there are songs that I skip over because I don't relate to it.
The reason I got into Pearl Jam is because they are one of the last true rock bands. Excellent musicians, and Vedder is a inspiring songwriter. I'm very confident in what I believe in, so whatever Vedder says won't shake my faith or change my vote.0 -

I'm sorry but I don't see how Eddie is anti religion. Perhaps he is against the religious establishment...but that is an entirely different thing.
Besides how many times has he referenced religious ideologies in a positive way...off hand he references the words Church and Prayer ALOT in a very positive way. These terms are traditional Catholic/Christian/Jewish ceremonial words.
I can see how he rejects the establishment...the man made actions that have been created which surround the Jewish, Christian, Muslim faiths as depicted in songs suchas Marker in the Sand, Faithful etc.
But to say that he is anti-religion, IMO is way off the mark!+--+-Official Upcoming Australasian Tour:Member #9-+--+0 -
sometimes80 wrote:why are you so preocupied with the fact that you were "born" into being catholic. so what? im going to raise my child catholic and if they change religions when they get older, more power to them, as long as it's not some wierd ass cult or something. being born into a religions doesn't mean anything besides the fact that that's what you're exposed to. if you change religions then you're no longer catholic...simple as that.
Because, believe it or not... not every parent feels the same way you do... there are parents who would take offense to their kids leaving religions... believe me I know a few (not mine).
If you grow up learning the differences between your religion and others and you choose to stay in that religion and be a part of it, fine... but my beef is with people who raise their kids under any religion and don't teach them the fundamental aspects of the religion, heck I went to Sunday school and learned nothing about that kind of stuff... it was all just assumed and we all know what happened when you assume eh?0 -

That's an ... interesting interpretation, to say the least. It also forces you to make some serious logical jumps to actually believe it.
But, to the main question. There's a difference between "Catholics" and "the Catholic church". There are "Catholics" that don't fit the mold in my opinion, but it's not my place to judge. So, no, it doesn't affect me.
Sure, the church has made its mistakes and I don't agree with everything the Catholic church claims. But religion, and especially Catholicism, are very personal experiences and relationships. A good Church/parish, to me, is defined as "good for you and your faith."0
