The south is all fucked up. Sorry to those of you in the minority that are not fundamentalists and racists or just plain stupid, but the south deserves the stereotype.
I was in Daytona beach about 10 years ago. I thought I was going down for spring break, MTV, naked chicks, the whole deal. It was actually what is called "Black College Reunion" week. Its essentially when the "black" colleges break for spring and many head to Daytona Beach. It was an interresting experience to say the least to truely be the minority. That said, it was a great week and my white ass met a lot of cool people, of all colors and cultures.
Here is the point of my post...
I got there about 2 days before the "reunion" began. The suvenior shops were all closing down. I asked them why they close down during spring break, like what the fuck?, and they told me its "because all the niggers come down here for the week". I swear to god, they said it as if it was no big deal. I was totally taken back by it. This happened in TWO different shops. Even the waitresses were saying it, in the restaurants. Saying shit like, "you take the table full of niggers" under their breath, but not really under their breath. Never in my life had I seen anything like it. I was blown away. Needless to say, I have never been back. What is happening to these kids does not suprise me in the least. Its horribly sad. Fuck, I have had the shit beat out me, but never did I consider it attempted murder. All that's sacred, comes from youth....dedications, naive and true.0 -
america has never been interested in dealing with the nitty gritty ... it's much easier to ignore it ... it's just like this fraud of a war where the lives of soldiers and innocent iraqis are inconsequential to the masses ...

If you really think the majority of people who live in "The South" fit your stereotypes then you are completely misinformed. It really shows your ignorance. Clearly you can find places such as the town in the article that have never progressed and have a higher percentage idiots than others. There is no defense for these morons and I agree that I hope they weed themselves out of the gene pool. However, you can't take this town and these people and make them the poster children for The South. For what it's worth, some of the most vile and racist shit I have ever heard has been muttered by Northerners. People are the problem, not people from a certain longitude and latitude range. It is much easier to stereotype, though, isn't it.Brian0 -

it seems that lack of religion can do that too from the above comment. The wiki page mentions nothing of religion being the cause or associated with it.

The white students who hung the nooses played a very stupid prank. They were punished accordingly. The choice they made did not cause physical harm to anyone.
The black students who beat the white kid to a pulp that landed him in the hospital should indeed be prosecuted for assault. The choice they made did cause physical harm to someone.
The later actions are not excused by the prior.
Try looking at this without the racial aspect. Take the color out of it and apply it to bullying in general.Makes much more sense, to live in the present tense.

Yes this is true and i was a part of that racism in Boston in the 70's. I was to go to high school in South Boston due to busing that was implemented in the 70's. It brought out the worst of the "Southie" youths and really showed what was REALLY on their minds set with hatred to others.
We moved away to South Carolina, Goose Creek where as a youth I could here KKK rallies off in the woods. Several months before we arrived there a 21 year old black male and his white girlfriend were killed, beheaded and dumped in a tree stump. I gather it was to send a message that black and whites were not meant to mix.
My point here is that racist behavior is all over this country, in some places more blatant than others. I mean we have a President whose grandparent (Prescott Bush) helped, worked to launder money through his Union Bank. not much has changed in this country except more now have the guts to say racism is wrong.

Nonsense, you're looking at it likes it black and white when it's not. Take a look and read on the sequence of events in an atmosphere of 80% white students and a town about the same.JACQUIE SOOHEN: A few days after the nooses were hung, the entire black student body staged an impromptu demonstration, crowding underneath the tree during lunch hour. Justin Purvis, the student who first asked to sit underneath the tree, described how the protest came about.
JUSTIN PURVIS: It was like, the first beginning, in the courtyard, they said, “Y’all want to go stand under the tree?” We said, “Yeah.” They said, “If you go, I’ll go. If you go, I’ll go.” One person went, the next person went, everybody else just went.
JACQUIE SOOHEN: The school responded to the protest by calling police and the district attorney. At an assembly the same day, the District Attorney Reed Walters, accompanied by armed policeman, addressed the students. Substitute teacher Michelle Rogers, one of the few black teachers at the school, was there. She recalls the DA's words to the assembled high schoolers.
MICHELLE ROGERS: The kids didn't say anything. They were listening. The kids were quiet. And so, District Attorney Reed Walters, you know, proceeded to tell those kids that “I could end your lives with the stroke of a pen.” And the kids were just -- it was like in awe that the district -- you know, Reed Walters would tell these kids that. He held a pen in his hand and told those kids that, “See this pen in my hand? I can end your lives with the stroke of a pen.”
JACQUIE SOOHEN: A series of incidents followed throughout the fall. In October, a black student was beaten for entering a private all-white party. Later that month, a white student pulled a gun on a group of black students at a gas station, claiming self-defense. The black students wrestled the gun away and reported the incident to police. They were charged with assault and robbery of the gun. No charges were ever filed against the white students in either incident. Then, in late November, someone tried to burn down the high school, creating even more tension.
Four days later, a white student was allegedly attacked in a school fight. The victim was taken to hospital and released shortly with a concussion. He attended a school function that evening. Six black students were charged with attempted second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, on charges that leave them facing between twenty and one hundred years in jail. The defendants, ranging in age from fifteen to seventeen, had their bonds set at between $70,000 and $138,000. The attack was written up in the local paper as fact, and DA Reed Walters published a statement in which he said, "When you are convicted, I will seek the maximum penalty allowed by law."
Here's the full interview from Democracy Now @ JENA SIX. One of the charges was assault with a deadly weapon and that weapon turns out to be a tennis shoe just to get that charge on the books.

I did get a bit of revenge when I got back to the city, tho. Every brochure of theirs I saw in all of the travel kiosks I threw in the garbage.
And BTW, if it had said in the brochure that people would be subjected to racist signs upon entry, I would never had gone."Where there is sacrifice there is someone collecting the sacrificial offerings."-- Ayn Rand

Trust me, if there was a way to leave, I most definitely would have.

Perhaps it would have been smarter to wait until after the tour to say something?
What your opinion of racist is not going to be the same as someone elses. You went to his place. Regardless of how you felt about his sign, you still were at his place, and to get all pissed off, and resort to name calling (in his mind, perhaps calling him a redneck is just as bad as him calling a black person a Coon).. and then your revenge for him not kicking your ass out of his tour, you go back to town, and destroy his advertisements? and why exactly is HE the problem?0 -

isn't this a tad apologetic for the owners ... it's like - it's ok to be racist because it's a private function ... i agree for the most part ultimately, one can choose to not support organizations they feel are racist but she had no way of knowing ...
anyhoo - if an assault on someone who doesn't even spend a night at the hospital warrants 22 years - it's pretty tragic ...0 -

Legally, yeah, its okay to be racist as long as you arent hurting or threatening anyone. As well it should be- Just because i dont agree with it, doesnt mean it should be illegal.
I just dont think it was appropriate to start calling HIM names. It brought her down to his level, and then to go the extra step of attempting to damage his business by destroying brouchures he had paid for is ridiculous.
If it had been a black business owner with a sign that said "Cracker Count," do you think she would have called that owner a Nigger? Doubtful. Hateful words are hateful words.0 -

i'm guessing she would react the same way ... i could be wrong ...
i dunno - i view this sometimes like violence against women ... for too long - people have kept their mouths shut in order not to stir the shit - but there comes a time when things need to be put out there ...
like my original post in this thread said - america isn't interested in knowing they are a racist country ... it doesn't sit well with their ideals of who they think they are ... they'd much rather brush these things aside and focus on other things ...0 -

I'm having trouble posting so I'm not sure if this is going to go thru...
As I posted originally, the sign at the swamp tour had a noose as did the tree that the white boys hung them on in Jena. Nooses ARE taken as a threat by the black population because of all the lynching in the slavery days. It's obvious they have no problem threatening people, because they certainly did it to me.
Secondly, if the brochure had "Arian Nation Swamp Tour" on it I would have had the option not to go. Or if I did decide to go, I would have known full well what I was getting into. It's not fair to put out brochures that seem welcoming to "everyone", and when you get to the tour there are racist materials posted. Which is why I had no problem throwing them out. Let them be a little more honest in their advertising about their preference of color.
And thirdly, yes, I'm sorry I offended "rednecks" by lumping this scum in with them. By definiton a "redneck" is a poor, uneducated person from the American south. I should have called him a racist piece of garbage.
Of course I would have been smarter to wait until after the tour to confront the owner. But he was there at that time, and might not have been when I got back. And I really wanted to discuss it with him."Where there is sacrifice there is someone collecting the sacrificial offerings."-- Ayn Rand

Redneck, by definition, is now universal. In other words, you can be a redneck and be from Boston.
Racial divisions in Louisiana are evolving even as we speak. The influx of Latino workers post-Katrina is adding additional tension to an area where there were at least three different cultures trying to carve out their niche....the cajuns, the blacks and the whites. All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you.
