Did you know that during the soccer World Cup last year, many Local Authorities in England banned people from displaying the English flag in support of the national team, for fear it would offend or be seen as a racist symbol ??!

.....and a swastika is nothing to a jew. you can't ignore intent. people need to learn not to be so ignorant.
they shouldn't let it have any meaning. ignorant people did the killing of the jews and the swastika is a mere symbol of that ignorance. why submit or react to a symbol and give it that power. when you face the ignorance and take away the anger the symbol or racial slur makes you feel then it loses it's status and no longer has power over you. a swastika can't do physical harm, only mental if you empower it and let it.
that's part of the reason racism still exists. blacks have given almighty power to the N word. they can sing and dance all day to rap music that uses the word 50 times in a song but the minute a white guy says it the music stops and a riot ensues. it's fucking retarded that a simple meaningless word can elicit so much violence.
in a war if the enemy was firing bullets that didn't hurt or kill would they continue to fight the war using the same bullets? no it would be useless right? so if we take away the power from these symbols and racial slurs just maybe it will help ease racial tensions. seeing most confrontations begin with words or symbols before escalating into physical violence as in this case with the jena six.
Oh dear dad
Can you see me now
I am myself
Like you somehow
I'll ride the wave
Where it takes me
I'll hold the pain
Release me

Free the Jena 6! Free Mychal Bell!
Join the Protest at the U.S. Justice Department

Washington DC

On Sept. 20, tens of thousands of people marched in Jena, La. to demand immediate freedom for Mychal Bell and the Jena 6. The case of the Jena 6 has garnered international attention, and shone a spotlight on the racist nature of this country's criminal "injustice" system.
Although the message of the Sept. 20 protest was broadcast far and wide, just one day later, a Louisiana judge delivered another outrage. Mychal Bell, 17, was denied bail while awaiting an appeal of his recently overturned adult conviction.
Bell and the other five young men that make up the "Jena 6" were charged with crimes ranging from assault to attempted murder. Bell, the first convicted, recently had his case overturned by a court ruling that he had been improperly tried as an adult. His hopes of freedom, however, have been dashed yet again. It will only be the mobilization of the people that will win justice for Mychal Bell and the Jena 6.
It is time to turn up the heat. The Sept. 20 protest in Jena has to be replicated over and over across the country until the Six are free. The ANSWER Coalition is joining with the hundreds of other groups calling for the freedom of the Jena 6 and Mychal Bell. We are demanding that all the charges be dropped!
On Tuesday, Oct. 2nd, people from all over the Washington DC community and northeastern region will stage an important demonstration in front of the Justice Department. The civil rights of Mychal Bell and all of the Jena 6 have been grossly violated. Mychal Bell's continued imprisonment is a flagrant miscarriage of justice.
"All those in the Washington DC area who believe in justice should be in front of the Justice Department on Oct. 2nd at 5pm. Injustice of this magnitude cannot be tolerated. Join with the ANSWER Coalition and other community organizations to Free Mychal Bell and end the persecution of all of the Jena 6."

The media uproar continues now it's here in Washington DC.

Are you saying that I'm saying this. Please clarify?? Maybe they are talking about in adult court....the charges should be in juvenile court.

I have to agree with SomebodyElsesSky. The use of "props" or words to intimidate are worthless if ignored. It's like a bully on a playground, if everyone walks away, who is he going to harass?
As for dropping the charges. Absolutely not! These kids did a greivous wrong. They should be punished. If it is true that they had previous charges and altercations with law officials, then perhaps it IS time to try them as adults. They obviously aren't learning their lessons in juvenile court.

For the record, I am of a certain culture (I am not ready to get into this) that has a history of violence foist against it. Our family has always taken a neutral stance when it comes to "things" associated with this ancestry. We live by the ideals that life is the here and now, not the past. If modern day persons choose to use those events as some sort of intimidation, they are the ones with a problem. We have moved on. Therefore, their negativity cannot harm us. It merely causes them further inner hate and prejudice.
Using the jews and swastika as an example is great, because when was the last time you heard a news story about a jewish kid beating up a gentile over a swastika or a heil hitler? Obviously the jews are a perfect example of how to overcome ethnic hatred.

if you were black...? i don't know. tis easy to say such a thing. personally i would have been furious. just as a person i'm horrified.
This is kind of relates to a point i was making a little earlier in this thread. It is impossible for somebody white to have the SAME emotional response and reaction to symbol that has had such historical impact. It is completely unfair for someone white to even suggest how someone black should react in such a situation. To say "if i were black i would do such and such..." just doesn't really make sense. If you are not black, you really don't know how you would react.

This is an interesting concept and question. It's sort of like being white and one maybe in an interracial relationship/marriage and someone else calls you n-word lover, spits on you, burns your car, degrades you...."traitor to the white race" and so on.
One could quickly get a feel of the significance/symbolism and the history of what a noose would mean. One rarely would know until one is physically put through that situation, the one where the heartrate goes through the roof.

Even so, not fully, i think. For white folks, even those in intr-racial marriages and so forth, lynching is not part of their PERSONAL experience in these United States. They may be able to understand it a little better (any open-minded wite person can do that), but still not have the same emotional response. It boils down to the subtle differences between sympathy and empathy.

I can dig what you're saying. I was just trying to give a particular sense to what it could be like. Hell, there's many young black folks who have no idea what a hanging noose signifies in many towns. They have to inquire to their elderly more experienced parents to understand what that particular symbol means.
Comes down to having both sides having more tolerance/compassion towards each other and like you said empathy.

Nope, sorry, i was just scared of the whole mindset in general, not you specifically.
