An historical day for Ireland

Oh no, it's not ME attaching something gigantic to the game... that was already done. Give it up dunk, you couldn't possibly understand. Do a news google search on 'Croke Park' and see which one of them does NOT mention the word 'historical' and yet, I didn't write any of themdunkman wrote:to say otherwise means i dont give a fuck.. its only a game, you're attaching some gigantic significance to a sport... big deal
attaching historical importance is something else entirely.. ask the population what year the Easter uprising was and hopefull 90%+ should be able to tell you... wait 100 years and ask them what was so significant about a rugby match and they'll probably just look blankly at you
. I'm sorry but you're just getting ridiculous now in order to keep the argument going.
On another note, apparently England is considering apologising for bloody sunday (no. 1) on the 24th

What? I think it would be a nice gesture and som eof the most nationalist people I know have said the same. Would you not think it would be a nice gesture? I'm not expecting it but if it happened it would be most welcome.gaz wrote:So what if they fuckin apologise, does that make it ok?Do you not think it's a bit fuckin late for that? Are they doing it so we won't boo god save the fucking queen?
Some stupid people will probably boo the anthem anyway, nothing I or you or the British foreign minister can do about that if they do.The Astoria??? Orgazmic!

It would have been a nice gesture in 1920 or '21 or'22 etc.Why now?Did the brits just realise that the murder scene is still there?Don't get me wrong,I'm all for progress, especially in my own country, but it seems that because Croke Park is in the public eye(as far as the uk is concerned)they suddenly feel the need to apologise.Kinda fuckin stinks if you ask me.23/8/06.

well yes, I'd totally agree the apology should have been there long ago but it wasn't and you're the one who suggested I move on from being stuck in the past. I don't feel as strongly as I'm sure many do and they have every right to... but I think an apology, however late, would be significant. I think the lack of any kind of apology is what keeps some people from moving on.gaz wrote:It would have been a nice gesture in 1920 or '21 or'22 etc.Why now?Did the brits just realise that the murder scene is still there?Don't get me wrong,I'm all for progress, especially in my own country, but it seems that because Croke Park is in the public eye(as far as the uk is concerned)they suddenly feel the need to apologise.Kinda fuckin stinks if you ask me.The Astoria??? I see your point. An apology now is................I don't want to say meaningless,I'm just a bit suspicious of their motives I suppose.I consider myself a Repuplican and I'm wary of the british hierarchy in general from the government to the monarchy,it's just the way I am and I make no apologies for it.As I said,it's their motives i have difficulty with.23/8/06.

What motives do you think there could be? I see the only possible motives as easing relations between the countries... ok well maybe not motive, but the only possible outcome. If they do apologise that's one less thing people have to remain bitter about. I'm pretty wary of them too but I think if we don't get anything under the Blair administration, we'll never get it.gaz wrote:I see your point. An apology now is................I don't want to say meaningless,I'm just a bit suspicious of their motives I suppose.I consider myself a Repuplican and I'm wary of the british hierarchy in general from the government to the monarchy,it's just the way I am and I make no apologies for it.As I said,it's their motives i have difficulty with. The Astoria??? I think the timing would be good - considering the whole 'event', the GAA opening their grounds to allow England to come and play at their headquarters, it IS an olive branch of sorts and a significant step. Not that we WANT anything back but the opportunity is there for them to give something back. It doesn't arise very often. Those who MAY boo the anthem are the types of people who will boo it apology or not.redrock wrote:Suspicious of motive or timing? The Astoria??? Orgazmic!

Because maybe the timing is right. Relations are pretty good right now and things have calmed down significantly in the past few years. Why not now??gaz wrote:You have to think their timing is a bit convenient, why now? It's been almost 87 years not usually a noteworthy anniversary,is it?So why?The Astoria??? Orgazmic!

No, of course they shouldn't have, and I don't believe ANY government doesn't do anything out of the good of their hearts... but considering the steps we've made recently, I think it's their turn. I think maybe we're showing them up a bit and there's a danger they could look even more stubborn than they have done. There's no reason for them NOT to apologise, everyone knows that, maybe it's time they see that too.gaz wrote:Maybe you're right, why not now? They should'nt have left it for so long, though.
Also I think we're big enough now to ACCEPT the apology... well I hope. The Astoria??? Orgazmic!

One thing that shocked me yesterday is that my ex (who is a protestant from the North, not political though) didn't know people actually DIED in Croke Park  . What do people think the big deal is all about? Do they just think it's cos it's such a great stadium? Or do they just think we're making a fuss about nothing?
I was surprised the first time I heard that they don't actually teach Irish history in England
. I actually got asked once buy an English guy 'what I want to know is what exactly did the English do on the Irish?' as if there was nothing! The Astoria??? Orgazmic!

They teach some aspects of it.
I know Scotland had Irish History as part of its History curriculum.
do you get any UK countries history as part of the Irish History Curriculum? (not arguing, actually wondering
) oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.0 -
Yep, we get the whole 800 years of when they invaded usdunkman wrote:They teach some aspects of it.

and other stuff going on at the time in Britain, we also learn about the British empire and stuff like that... quite a bit of British history to be honest. I only say it because I think surely it would be beneficial for them to know why SOME Irish people may be a little bit bitter towards them. The Astoria??? Orgazmic!

well I don't hold anybody's education against them... I blame the system for something like that. How can you hold something against somebody for not knowing something? He's far from a loyalist or a unionist if that's what you're thinking and he hates the whole political thing. There's no point getting disgusted, I told him about it and he can no longer say he doesn't know what happened in Croke park. All it takes is for people to be told and to understand peoples reasons.gaz wrote:Im sorry to say,I'm not surprised in the least by the English chap, but I fuckin am surprised that someone from this island, regardless of religion or backround did'nt know anything about bloody sunday. What did you say to him?The Astoria??? you cant teach kids the "bad history" though

i'm of the opinion that people shouldnt be bitter to a country that maybe did some bad shit to them 400 odd years ago... if i was bitter then i'd have a lot of England hating to do, but i just cant be arsed... why feel bitter about it when it happened years ago, and was done by some men in suits who are long dead...
the world would be a better place without kids growing up holding grudges towards countries methinks.oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.0
