I've mentioned this before but I found an article in the Washington Post which may help explain the enormity of this Sunday coming.

Ireland moves on:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/05/AR2007020501459.html

It is probably the most talked about sporting event in the history of the country, as much for the event as for the actual game, it's HUGE! I have my ticket :) and I'll be there and it's one of those really exciting moments... similar to seeing Pearl Jam for the first time. I can't wait :)
The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
Verona??? it's all surmountable
Dublin 23.08.06 "The beauty of Ireland, right there!"
Wembley? We all believe!
Copenhagen?? your light made us stars
Chicago 07? And love
What a different life
Had I not found this love with you

Well I guess if it's good enough for Muhommed Ali to fight there, U2 and the Chicago Bears to play there... it's good enough for Eddie O'Sullivans men :)

Now Now Dunk that wasn't funny !!!! :)

It really is a turning point and a great one at that, i'm sure there'll be a few die hards who'll be raging at " God Save the Queen " being played in Croke.

I think it'd be different if it was the british army coming to play in Croke. But really sport is sport and when possible should be left to do its job without political context interferring.

Let's just hope the luck of the irish will be with us and we play well !!!!!
Helen i'm envious you have tickets!!!

I know we have to move on and it's great that we're doing so but if ANYTHING gets the Irish team and supporters geared up it will be god save the queen... their anthem will have an adverse affect :D it may be a sad moment though, I wonder what the reaction will be? I believe prince Harry's attending :o

It really depends ........... although seeing as the irish rubgy team is an all island team i dont see many northern fans having too much of an adverse reaction remember some of those ulster boys wearing ireland shirts regard God save the queen as their anthem ....... hence ...ireland's call
    BUT
Regardless of tolerance there'll still be many who'll utilise that moment to hope and pray that england walk of the field with heads hanging in defeat...

I think i'd hate for anyone to be disrespectful and boo and shit thus letting the side down so to speak.

Yep, I'd like to think that, as a nation, we can be bigger than that. There'll always be a few who let the side down though :o but with the majority (hopefully) of supporters being true rugby fans, thus respecting everything, hopefully they can nip it in the bud.

wish i had tickets for this. it will be the game of the tournament. horgan is back (Thank god!) although without brian we may struggle a bit. paul and donacha need to raise their game. and for god sake start with jerry flannery! fucking great hooker!

edit: MUNSTER FOR THE HEINEKIN CUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Horgan's not back for the France match though, is he? He's a fucking brilliant player... come on SO much the past year or two. Well it's very unlike O'Connell to be absent like he was last Sunday so I'll expect a BIG game from him. O'Callaghan just needs to stop giving away penalties :o and I agree with Flannery. It's not really fair on Best but when Flannery came on the forwards started playing like the Munster pack cos that's what they are and they got those rolling mauls going and it was good to watch.

Stringer may be out this weekend but I think that's a good thing cos Boss adds a lot more to the team I reckon... not to fault Stringer or anything but I reckon Boss is faster and he's a wee bit bigger too :D

Holy fuck fuck fuck you're right, he's BACK :):):):):):) that's fucking EXCELLENT!!!!!!! Oh I feel so much more confident now :) . Backs my feeling that there's no WAY O'Driscoll will be fit - Eddie's just trying to confuse the French.

boss is more attacking but i think ronan and peter have a far better understanding and pete is a bit more creative. issac is a nice option to have but not seen as much from him yet and wouldnt want to try him against a stong french team.

well Stringer and O'Gara have played together since they were 10 or something... but I think Boss is much more exciting and well capable... and the French wouldn't know as much about him either though.

No thank you very much, I have a thread for the tournament on the AET so I was hoping to discuss the historical nature of the game here. I think something like turning our backs to the pitch during the anthem would be a nice silent protest rather than booing or any of that stuff.

    It's '' An Historical Day''

only use ''A'' if the next Word starts with a consonant that isnt h.

always know what you are talking about before you try and ridicule someone :)

"an is used before any noun starting with h, such as an hotel, an historian, an hypothesis, three forms common in academic use."

Is this a friendly between the two teams?

Or is it a big plot by Ireland for some pay back? ;)

stringer does have his off-days with his passing but it was just the begining of the tournament. a lot of guys against wales had a poor game by their own standards. if he is fit i would always go with pete... he and ronan have an understanding which is not mached by any other pair in the game. they have been playing rugby since i think high school days.

First off - one of the first things my brother told me about rugby that I quickly came to realise is true: there's actually no such thing as a friendly in rugby :p . There may be matches that aren't 'competitive' but they all count towards world rankings and the like.

Secondly, if there WERE friendlies in rugby... this would be FAR from it. It's part of a competition called the 'six nations', every year Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, France & Italy each play eachother once and whoever tops the table at the end wins the tournament. If you beat EVERY team, you win a grand slam. We haven't won a grand slam in about 60 years :o and this year will be our best ever chance in MY lifetime probably. Since last summer (when we lost by within one score TWICE to New Zealand - who have the best TWO teams in the world, their first team and their second team :D ), we've beaten the likes of South Africa and Australia, who are two more heavyweights in rugby. One of our clubs last year won the Heineken cup, which is like the European club cup.

So there are high expectations on Ireland at the moment, because apart from the six nations, the world cup (held every four years) is also on this year, in September. We are at LEAST expected to win the six nations, they're also pretty much expected to win the grand slam :o and THEN we go into the world cup with that momentum and see what happens :) although we've a really tough group.

So, yes, we're definitely expecting to beat England as they haven't been playing well since they won the last world cup and we've beaten them 3 out of 4 years I think. But the six nations is a competition where anything can happen between the top 5 teams - just last year Scotland (who SHOULD finish second last this year - sorry dunk) beat France and England

    Hope that helps a bit.

That's cos the stupid fucker's been playing with a broken hand or something :D

I agree darkcrow about their understanding but I really think the few games Boss played, he didn't weaken the team at ALL. Stringer also sometimes tries to go to fast and fucks up, which pisses me off, AND what's with those bloody quick penalties when it's in a kickable position? :o You wouldn't get the All Blacks doing that, they take every score they can get until they've finished the other team off and THEN ya go for the fun tries.

I think Boss just added so much more to the game without actually taking very much away.

It's Flannery and Murphy I feel are getting the bad deal out of this.

jerry should be starting on sunday. i think eddie was just worried about his fitness. Geordan is a great player but right now I do not think he is the "in form" guy. what we need to be worried about is Referee Steve Walsh who has said he will "come down hard" on ireland. refs really shouldnt be allowed to say that shit. they are supposed be unbias. irb should change the officials. anytway southern hemisphere refs suck.
