    I dont see him ripping the troops, he is speaking the blatant truth, matter of factly.
    How many of you college/university folk went to Iraq or know anyone of your academic friends who decided to go to Iraq? Sure there are a few but they are rare.
    The flip side of this is that its academic folk who have the education that comment on the war and rip it up but they arent the ones there fighting it, its the non academics dying for it.
    Bottom line: get everyone the fuck out of Iraq and start concentrating on your own problems.

    If I were ever sent to Iraq to fight, and was lucky enough to make it back home, you could damn well expect me to throw my medal at the White House. I don't want a medal for shooting at people who we should have never been at war with in the first place.

    people do have a lot of options. don't forget that there are alot of people who come from broken families that feel the need and desire to be something. it is pretty easy to 'prey' on someone like that. i've seen it first hand. they used to come in our high school library all the time.

    much easier said than done. i think it would be 100 times easier to join the army than it would to do any of the things you listed; furthermore, it is easier to make that decision when a recruiter makes it seem like heaven.

    Other educational options for poorer people; work your ass off in school and get good enough grades to get an acedemic scholarship, excel in a sport and get a sports scholarship, apply for the millions of other scholarships out there, work part time and attend a community college, work full time and attend school part time.

    most commercial pilots were trained in the air force. in the last 20 years i personally know of at least 10 people who enlisted so they could fulfill their dreams to become commercial pilots. the list goes on and on.

    They could try doing what I did and work their way through school. I know it's innovative approach that you probably feel is beyond comprehension of poor people. Why don't you try respecting these people instead of feeling sorry for them. If they've chosen the military then respect that choice. It was not their only option, they know and so should you.

    the list keeps going on and on every day of some young soul who loses his life in Iraq trying to pay for his college so his mom and dad don't have to. For every one person who joins to pursue their dream job of being a pilot, there are hundreds who had no other option to pay for college.

    if they don't have the brains; be thankful there IS a place for them and not in jail. be grateful they have an option to get an education and make something of their lives.

    I think the key difference is that I show the people making the decision to join the military some respect. You seem to want to treat them as brain dead fodder for a killing machine.

    They have options. Respect their decision. Or do you think so little of the poor that you feel you should be in charge of making their decisions for them?

    NO ONE should have to risk their lives fighting in a war to get a proper education. Rich or poor, just the rich have more options to get into college than the poor do.

    i agree. he makes it sound like poor people are so stupid they don't realize they will be shot at. i was born dirt poor and worked 2 jobs plus fronted a band to get on my feet.

    I'm not looking down on anyone man. They choose the path because they have no options. The options given in this thread were: a) study really hard and get a scholarship b) become a great athlete and get a scholarship.

    Hell, I grew up in a middle class home and got decent grades and even I couldn't get scholarships or even into the school of my choice. I was good at sports but not anywhere near the level of getting a scholarship.

    YOU put your life in jeoprady every time you get into a car; or walk a city street. more people were killed by drunk drivers then will ever be killed in iraq.
