I have spent the last 30 years forming the religious right. I write a letter every week and send a newspaper every month to 200,000 pastors who are broadly called evangelicals, bringing them up to date on what is happening in Washington, in the state capitals, in the culture, and what we need to do about it. And of course I'm criticized for it, and of course I have calculated the positives and the negatives, but I have long been at peace with what I do.

I would have to agree. If the media never reprinted any of Falwell's comments the only people that would have heard him are the people that follow. The majority of the country would be oblivious to his hatefull rhetoric.

Morally he was a good guy

Really? Your idea of what constitutes 'morality' obviously differs from that of much of the rest of the human race - excepting neo-cons, and Nazis.

'...his alliance with Republicans in the 1980s was a key help in the elections of Ronald Reagan as president and many political leaders have since continued to seek his support.

Mr Falwell was a strong opponent of abortion, homosexuality and many other issues that conflicted with his fundamentalist Christian beliefs.

His statements on feminism and race issues often outraged liberals.

In 2002, he sparked anger across the Muslim world by calling the Prophet Muhammad a "terrorist". He later apologised.

Shortly after the 11 September 2001 attacks, he said that gays, atheists, civil-rights activists and legal abortions in the US had angered God and "helped this happen".

In 1999, he denounced the BBC TV children's show The Teletubbies, because he believed one character, Tinky Winky, was homosexual.'

The guy was a definite religious fanatic. No doubt about it to those who knew anything about him.

Reminds me of the Wesboro Baptist folks.....the same delusional religious framework for the breeding of hatred and societal lunacy...

Hitler was a politician. A twisted fuck who brainwashed people into carrying out his dirty work. He didn't personally kill 6 - 10 million Jews. Ordinary Germans susceptible to indoctrination did. Even Hitler had to begin somewhere. Genocide begins with propaganda - hateful propaganda. Jerry Falwell spouted hateful, stupid propaganda.
Fuck him! His body should be burned in a trash bin along with Donald Rumsfelds.

...can you imagine the type of person that supports him? I mean the guy died and all, but he didn't really live or actually qualify for life either... ultimately anyone that spouts or maintains that mindset is human garbage...

That's the worst part about this. They can't differentiate the respect that average people deserve (warts and all, we all make friends and enemies) with the scum of the earth who preach mass hatred by the millions. It's a shame that some can't differentiate. That's why we have the masses of sheep allowing scum like him make millions.

    More Falwell quotes:

    ON THE ANTICHRIST:

'If he's going to be the counterfeit of Christ, he has to be Jewish. The only thing we know is he must be male and Jewish.'

    ON THE TELETUBBIES:

As a Christian I feel that role modelling the gay lifestyle is damaging to the moral lives of children.

    ON THE 9/11 ATTACKS:

The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad.

True. In a more civilized world, people like Falwell would be laughed at. Unfortunately millions end up hanging on his every word instead. We saw in 1933 how dangerous this can be. If I had it my way I'd have had the pudgy little pervert tarred and feathered and pelted with rotten fruit.

    the moral majority is neither....

    fuck you falwell!
  • As much as I personally disliked the guy, I can't excuse myself to rejoice in his death. That would allow me to spew the same hate that I despised him for spreading.
