    lol I always enjoy seeing Wal-Mart being tossed around in these discussions.

    Wal-Mart has done more for the lower-class than the welfare state ever has. Like... I dunno... Jobs?

    My question is why no one ever complains about 5th Avenue vendors "robbing the rich."

    See, and I think it has more to do with the actual National Holiday being Christmas.....it shouldn't matter. They should recognize the majority and move on. Celebrate what you want with your family.....but understand that the majority of the populous here in the USA celebrates Christmas and they will see Christmas trees and signs saying Merry Christmas and Santa Clause all over the place. I disagree with whiting out the word Christmas because a very small percentage of the people who make up this great country do not celebrate it.

    Schools should have Christmas trees, and Christmas parties. (However, I also think they should have Halloween parties.) When the word Christmas no longer gets everyone a day off....then we can hide it away with a generic Holiday message so as not to offend anyone. But, while it is recognized as a National Holiday....then everyone needs to deal with it. In a democracy, the majority wins.

    If we should just refer to everything as Happy Holidays, how will we ever know what we're celebrating?

    For example, Columbus Day.

    78% of the U.S. population is Christian. 22% is not a "very small percentage." Personally, I don't care whether or not my city puts up a tree, and if they do I don't care what they call it. They can put up a menorah instead, or a festivus pole ... who cares?

    Anyone who gets upset when someone wishes them a happy holiday might want to try having a REAL problem sometime, just for perspective.

    Except for I think that you think all 22% do not celebrate Christmas and I would venture to guess that about 80% of that 22%, while may never go to church, still celebrate and like the tradition of Christmas.

    Nope, I am encouraging everyone...businesses and individuals alike, to wish everyone whatever they celebrate. Stop trying to make everyone happy with one magically vague statement.

    And as far as government and schools, if it is a National Holiday, then celebrate it openly.

    I'm with hippiemom. I can't believe anyone really cares about this. I think it's ridiculous for either side to get upset, Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Joyous Kwanza, who cares? If your biggest worry in life is how you are greeted at Wal-mart around Christmas time, I want your life.

    you're confusing the tree and santa and gifts with christmas. those are traditions and have been adopted as secular american "holiday" traditions that everyone in this country does. the christmas you want recognized is the manger and whatnot. that is a religious holiday and you're free to still celebrate it. but you'd be up in arms if your kid had to observe ramadan in school and i dont think it's unreasonable for minorities to feel uncomfortable being forced to observe christianity in school.

    the "traditions" or christmas have nothing to do with actual christmas. show me where santa is mentioned in the bible and ill yield. christians hijacked a pagan holiday to up their membership. now they're pissed that the secularists have hijacked some of their holiday traditions to brighten up the winter. quit whining and get over it.

    I mention in my fucking opening post that I just want to celebrate the PAGAN tradition of Santa Clause and whatnot.

    I am talking about the National Holiday in the United States called Christmas. It is has Christmas trees. And we fucking say Merry Christmas.

    It's not difficult. It's exactly what I do. If I know what holiday a person celebrates, that's what I wish them. If I don't know, it's "have a great holiday." It makes sense for governments and stores to take the "holiday" approach, since they deal with people from all traditions. Why is THIS mentality so difficult for people to understand?

    CHRISTmas is a CHRISTian religious holiday. the santa clause and whatnot is the holidays. it is secular and has nothing to do with actual christmas. by any name, it's the same damn tradition. so who cares if you hear happy holidays or merry christmas? times change. it's not the 1950s anymore, thank god.

    Christmas is of course a religious holiday but I think the religious sentiment has gone, most see it as a commercial holiday. But I don't care. It's a time of year to be happy and spend time with the people that you love. Whether you are religious or not, it doesn't bother me :)
