I was in Tip-Top Tailors on Sunday looking at suits and I was conversing with my friend Mandy at the time. I explained that being atheist I don't feel the same emotional attraction to the holiday events that others do. I appreciate the time spent with my family, but I'd be equally satisfied doing that a different weekend, without gifts and without a huge meal.
While I was discussing this two elderly women were staring at me, I think they were disgusted, offended or maybe just confused.

Neighbor I believe everything you said except the part about looking at suits. I'm quite sure the elderly women were experiencing all three of those things just as you observed. They are older and wiser and were sad that you can't experience the joy of the season as they have for so long. The Christmas season is not meant to be a generic, pragmatic, practical event.

LOL
I actually purchased a suit from that store. It's nice and was only $225. It's going to replace the blue pinstripe suit that doesn't fit me anymore.
Old women, yup, they just aren't hip with the times.

I should check that store out, some of my suit pants are getting shiny in the seat. As for the elderly ladies, I guess you can't argue with that but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and quess they might have been hip in their time. Good luck with the suit.

Thanks, the salesperson was extremely helpful, his name was Movahe or something.

in any case, it's not really christmas anymore. christmas is dec 25. the madness of the month before it is the holidays... kwanzaa, ramadan, hannukah, christmas, solstice, etc... are all part of it. .
cant count Kwanza...that one is a 'made up" holiday...by the blacks with no religion ...

No my friend, I am not ruined by any of this. But in the example I sited in the opening post is of a city, and the people of that city not happy with their city saying a generic Happy Holidays. Not about a corporate ran Wal-Mart. I agree...commercialism is out of control in association with Christmas. WalMart is gonna do whatever they want to do. However, our schools and government offices we do have control and influence over.
then vote them out of office. if enough people are outraged, it will change. thing is, the vast majority of people dont give a fuck what the greeting says. it's a small, paranoid minority looking for some reason to feel important.
cant count Kwanza...that one is a 'made up" holiday...by the blacks with no religion ...
eh, so was christmas. the christians had to think of a good way to rope pagans into converting, so they said that jesus was actually born dec 25 to steal the thunder of pagan solstice celebrations. 1500 years later... voila! christmas!
We do have influence, and if we live in communities with Muslims and Jews and pagans and people who celebrate Kwanzaa and god only knows who else, it makes sense for the community to use the "holiday" standard, rather than the "Christmas" standard. Wishing someone a happy holiday is not an insult to their traditions. What's insulting is assuming that your own personal traditions should take precedence over others. If you're in a small town where everyone celebrates Christmas, then Christmas it is! If you're in a more diverse area, deal with it. "Happy holidays" means, "Whatever holiday you celebrate, I hope it's a happy one." It's a NICE thing to say, and people should take it that way.
See, and I think it has more to do with the actual National Holiday being Christmas.....it shouldn't matter. They should recognize the majority and move on. Celebrate what you want with your family.....but understand that the majority of the populous here in the USA celebrates Christmas and they will see Christmas trees and signs saying Merry Christmas and Santa Clause all over the place. I disagree with whiting out the word Christmas because a very small percentage of the people who make up this great country do not celebrate it.
Schools should have Christmas trees, and Christmas parties. (However, I also think they should have Halloween parties.) When the word Christmas no longer gets everyone a day off....then we can hide it away with a generic Holiday message so as not to offend anyone. But, while it is recognized as a National Holiday....then everyone needs to deal with it. In a democracy, the majority wins.

78% of the U.S. population is Christian. 22% is not a "very small percentage." Personally, I don't care whether or not my city puts up a tree, and if they do I don't care what they call it. They can put up a menorah instead, or a festivus pole ... who cares?
Anyone who gets upset when someone wishes them a happy holiday might want to try having a REAL problem sometime, just for perspective.

Except for I think that you think all 22% do not celebrate Christmas and I would venture to guess that about 80% of that 22%, while may never go to church, still celebrate and like the tradition of Christmas.

Oh, and you can wish me a Happy Holidays all you want if you are trying to cover Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years with one fell swoop.
Don't do it because you are afraid of offending someone so you'll just be super vague as a replacement.
Nope, I am encouraging everyone...businesses and individuals alike, to wish everyone whatever they celebrate. Stop trying to make everyone happy with one magically vague statement.
And as far as government and schools, if it is a National Holiday, then celebrate it openly.
I'm with hippiemom. I can't believe anyone really cares about this. I think it's ridiculous for either side to get upset, Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Joyous Kwanza, who cares? If your biggest worry in life is how you are greeted at Wal-mart around Christmas time, I want your life.

you're confusing the tree and santa and gifts with christmas. those are traditions and have been adopted as secular american "holiday" traditions that everyone in this country does. the christmas you want recognized is the manger and whatnot. that is a religious holiday and you're free to still celebrate it. but you'd be up in arms if your kid had to observe ramadan in school and i dont think it's unreasonable for minorities to feel uncomfortable being forced to observe christianity in school.
the "traditions" or christmas have nothing to do with actual christmas. show me where santa is mentioned in the bible and ill yield. christians hijacked a pagan holiday to up their membership. now they're pissed that the secularists have hijacked some of their holiday traditions to brighten up the winter. quit whining and get over it.

Okay, listen here everybody.....read what the fuck I have written....especially my opening post.
Don't tell me what I am talking about.
I mention in my fucking opening post that I just want to celebrate the PAGAN tradition of Santa Clause and whatnot.
I am NOT talking about religion.
Nothing pisses me off more than when someone tells me what I am talking about.....which completely counters what I have written.
I am talking about the National Holiday in the United States called Christmas. It is has Christmas trees. And we fucking say Merry Christmas.

Why are people so nasty about this topic?
I never lashed out to anyone about this topic. In fact....I don't even see it as a topic which should get people angry. Yet I you fuckers are lashing out on me as though i am putting your mother down.
You people are fucking weird. If this topic bothers you....then leave it alone.
It's not difficult. It's exactly what I do. If I know what holiday a person celebrates, that's what I wish them. If I don't know, it's "have a great holiday." It makes sense for governments and stores to take the "holiday" approach, since they deal with people from all traditions. Why is THIS mentality so difficult for people to understand?

You're the one confusing shit here.
CHRISTmas is a CHRISTian religious holiday. the santa clause and whatnot is the holidays. it is secular and has nothing to do with actual christmas. by any name, it's the same damn tradition. so who cares if you hear happy holidays or merry christmas? times change. it's not the 1950s anymore, thank god.
Christmas is of course a religious holiday but I think the religious sentiment has gone, most see it as a commercial holiday. But I don't care. It's a time of year to be happy and spend time with the people that you love. Whether you are religious or not, it doesn't bother me
I think the world would be a much nicer place if people didn't take offense when others wished them well. If you don't celebrate Christmas and someone has the nerve to wish you a merry one, can't you just go ahead and try to have a merry day on the 25th anyway? By the same token, if you do celebrate Christmas and someone wishes you a happy holiday, say thank you! They want you to be happy on your holiday, how is that offensive?!
I blame Bill O'Reilly for creating an issue where there wasn't one. Of all the things we argue about in this country, this is surely the dumbest.
Wow, I agree with hippiemom. The biggest evidence yet that this issue is beyond stupid and anyone who gets upset about being wished a Merry Christmas or Happy Hanakuh just doesn't have enough problems to worry about.
