CHRISTmas is a CHRISTian religious holiday. the santa clause and whatnot is the holidays. it is secular and has nothing to do with actual christmas. by any name, it's the same damn tradition. so who cares if you hear happy holidays or merry christmas? times change. it's not the 1950s anymore, thank god.

And perhaps Animal does not care about the religious part, but every year you see more and more "put Christ in Christmas" signs in yards. And I am sure some of these people are the same peopel that are offended by Happy Holidays.

So let me get this straight .... you don't care one bit about Christ, but it's real important to you that everyone call it CHRISTmas? Wtf?
That is accurate. Did you want to rename the United States holiday because it has the word Christ in it when we don't actually say Christ-Mas....we pronounce it Krismas?

Again, it's about tradition of Christmas day.

To me....and I suspect a lot of folks who do not go to church.....do not think about Christ or care really much about that fable still want the word Christmas to be used. Why you ask....not because of the word Christ....but because that is what we have been calling it for many, many years and that is the day (among many others throughout the year) that this country has recognized as a National Holiday.

Why are people so nasty about this topic?

I never lashed out to anyone about this topic. In fact....I don't even see it as a topic which should get people angry. Yet I you fuckers are lashing out on me as though i am putting your mother down.

You people are fucking weird. If this topic bothers you....then leave it alone.

No need to be ass holes.

oh come on! It was a damn joke about a topic that really shouldnt be a topic in the first place. There's SO many different kinds of poeple in this country. People should remember that when someone wishes them them happy holidays or merry christmas or whateverthehellelse they say. Nowadays, people should just be happy that people are actually greeting them in a friendly matter. And I wasn't lashing out. I was making a joke. People take this issue way too far when common sense should kick in and end it in a mere matter of minutes.

Anyone offended by "Happy Holidays" really needs to find real problems.

I can tell you though, there are Christian folks who are upset & offended by teh commercialization of a holiday that celebrates the Birth of Christ, not so much people saying "Happy Holidays" or "Happy Jedi Yoda Day" or whatever.

It's not difficult. It's exactly what I do. If I know what holiday a person celebrates, that's what I wish them. If I don't know, it's "have a great holiday." It makes sense for governments and stores to take the "holiday" approach, since they deal with people from all traditions. Why is THIS mentality so difficult for people to understand?
No, that is not exactly what you do. I say, if you celebrate Kwanzaa...then you should wish everyone a Happy Kwanzaa. You should not worry about what everyone else celebrates. You should not strip down your greeting for fear of offending someone. And you should not offer greetings or tidings for something you don't celebrate.

I am sure there are. But you can't really have it both ways. If we are to expect everyone to happily say Merry Christmas, we can't expect that Christ be put back in Chirstmas. Once the near-secularness of the holilday vanishes...let me put it this way: I am a Christmas-celebrating agnostic and have actually been told by someone that they are offended that I celbrate Christmas when I am not even a Christian. These people better not be the once bitching about "Happy Holidays."

I am one of these people. And I don't get bothered if someone says "Merry Christmas." I also don't get bothered if someone says "Happy Holidays." I use happy holidays to people I do not know, incase they don't celebrate Christmas. If that makes me PC, so be it.

That's half my point. People shouldn't be offended by being greeted with a well wishing from a holiday they don't personally celebrate. And the other half of that is people shouldn't be whiting out the word Christmas (or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa) because they are afraid someone else doesn't celebrate it.

Fanch....nobody has ever said they are offended by the greeting of Happy Holidays. My point is that phrase shouldn't be used because you are afraid of offending someone because they don't celebrate what you celebrate. Use it all day long if like i have already said you are trying to cover Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years with one fell swoop.

I am advocating people taking down their guards and wishing people what YOU celebrate. People need to stop being worried about what everyone else does or whom they might offend by celebrating their holiday.

Again, I would be elated to be wished a Happy Hanukkah. I would feel it way more sincere than a generic Happy Holidays because I don't know what you celebrate so I don't want to offend you...mentality.

So if I know someone is Jewish and celebrates Hannukah, I should wish them a Happy Solstice? Why on earth would I do that?

I don't know why you would do that. You've lost me.

If you do celebrate Christmas....then you should wish everyone a Merry Christmas....not an insincere greeting from a holiday you don't celebrate just to try and fit in or make everyone happy. And you shouldn't not say Christmas because you are afraid of offending someone...that is just silly being this is the United States and it is recognized as a National Holiday.,

Because you said I should wish other people a happy whatever-I-celebrate. So if I'm celebrating the solstice, I should wish my Jewish and Christian friends a happy solstice? That makes no sense. I'm not worried about offending anyone ... I've already said that anyone who gets offended by people saying nice things to them is an idiot. I'd just rather offer a greeting that makes some kind of sense. My Jewish and Christian friends aren't going to have a solstice party, happy or otherwise, so it would be a stupid thing to say to them.

I wouldn't say that I "celebrate" Christmas. I would say that I get reluctantly dragged along to various Christmas gatherings in an attempt to keep my parents and in-laws happy.

Personally, the only winter event that has any meaning for me whatsoever is the solstice, as a celebration of nature and the passing of the seasons, the return of the sun, that sort of thing. I do put up a tree ... I call it a solstice tree, my husband calls it a Christmas tree, my kids call it "the tree," no one argues about it. Don't give me any shit about my tree either, the pagans were doing the tree thing long before the Christians ;)

Then yes, if the Winter Solstice is what has meaning to you....then you should absolutely wish your Jewish and Christian friends a Happy Solstice. That would be way more sincere than wishing them a Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah coming from you. If that bothers the people you give the greeting to....then that is their problem.

And no need to wink at me. I pointed out that it is a Pagan tradition that we celebrate today in my opening post. ;)

My greetings are most sincere! I DO sincerely want my Jewish friends to have a happy Hannukah, my Christian friends to have a merry Christmas! They're not going to have a solstice at all, who am I kidding? The Jews will be in the middle of their Hannukah celebrations on the day of the solstice, and the Christians will mostly be busy in a mad flurry of last-minute shopping and baking. I'd feel like an idiot wishing them a happy solstice, it wouldn't be sincere at all.

    AnImAl:

I'm suprised how opinionated, one sided and stubborn you are being on this (unbeliveably stupid) issue. Usually I point to you when I want to steer towards level headed, middle of the road thinking.

I am a sworn enemy of political correctness. I disagree with those that think you should say happy holidays or seasons greetings so as to not offend anyone. At the same time I also disagree with those that feel you should say Merry Christmas to support (bandwagon) Christianity.

Albeit for completely different reasons pagan or religious, you're in the same boat with some very screwed up people.

That's fair and I know my position lends people to think that I feel this way for different reasons than I really do. You and I are damn near in complete agreement except for the hearing or thinking about Christ when I see or say the word Christmas. I understand that most people who side with this argument do so for religious Christian reasons....that is not me. And it is another example of how I think independently of any organized group.

another (off the wall) example...I am a liberal who supports Pro-choice, the death penalty, and our right to bear arms. Call me crazy.....but I make up my own mind....as I suspect you do also.

i am the latter. which is why i dont give a damn what greetings i receive or what people call it. as long as i get the day off to see my family and get some swag under the tree... they can call it happy hitler day for all i care. ok, maybe that's a bit far, but you should see my point.
