Let us write a story sentence by sentence.

i could have so much fun with this one. i wonder if he'd be up for a little mindfuck.
i laughed. he looked at me, furrowing his brow.

'what's so funny?'

he turned and walked away. maybe i underestimated him. wouldn't be the first time i'd made that mistake with a man. i followed, so i could lock the front door behind him. pushing the kitchen door open, he found him standing there as if he were expecting me. now who was mindfucking who? we stood looking each other in the eye, neither one of us willing to back down. almost imperceptibly, a smile formed on his face. he quickly hid it.

'if you want something mark, you're gonna have to ask. i'm not a mind reader.'

using his first name gave me a thrill.

'i don't know. what is it you want to ask me?'

a game player. i like it. i smiled in recognition.

'no. i told you that story detective. i'm not repeating it. not here and not now. if that's all you're for, then i suggest you leave. you know where the door is.'

i left him where he stood and walked back into the kitchen to boil the jug. leaning against the bench, i wrapped my arms around my body.
what the fuck was i doing? i couldn't do this with him. not now. i needed to do something. to react somehow, i know that. and i guess the best defense for me, was a good attack. or so i always thought.

'who said it was a game detective? i was raped. by a neaderthal who thinks he can do whatever he pleases and who beats up on my sister. i don't need to be shown where the lines are drawn thank you. now i think you should leave.'

having anna turn up at his place last night stirred many emotions in davey. he was trying to put her behind him and he knew that wasn't ever going to be easy. the only other time he had seen her so vulnerable and lost was when she lost the baby. though lord knows he didn't handle that very well. he also wondered why she didn't go to arlo instead of coming to see him. he knew she was a comfortable with him, but surely there was more to it than that. the more he thought about anna, the more confused he got. he crossed the room to where his files were and opened the second bottom drawer. this was where he kept photos that he wanted to keep private. not exactly a secure location, but then who would go through his stuff. he pulled out a sheet of paper that was A3 size. davey looked at the sleeping form that was anna. she was naked and nearly five months pregnant. she had fallen asleep on a mattress on the floor one day after they had made love. the sunlight streamed through the window. her hand rested protectively on her tummy. it was a tight shot that started just above her brow and ended just as her belly started to curve under. it was one of his favourite shots of her.
the phone rang bringing davey out of his reminiscence. he left the photo on the bench as he went to answer the it.

'you know i saw your girl yesterday. she didn't look too good.'

'she was looking for my brother. don't know if she found him though. what's up with her she seemed a bit freaked out by me. i don't know why. i'm an alright guy. i wasn't gonna hurt her or nothing'

davey realised that perhaps dex was a little high. he did tend to ramble on when he was under the influence.

what davey said sailed right over dex's head. davey heard him sigh and then dex swore as something smashed. then dex dropped the phone. davey had to stop himself from laughing as he listened to dex try and retrieve it. but he realised it wasn't a funny situation.

'what? i'm not too much of a girl. am I? why am i a girl? what?'

dex was clearly not thinking straight.

there was no reply and davey had to wonder if dex even knew he was still on the phone.

'is isabelle there with you dex?'

dex seemed to stir, but still said nothing.

'DEX!'
