    i looked at freya. she still had the sculpture in her hand.

    'and what the hell can arlo do? help us roll the body in a rug and dump it off the nearest bridge. no freya, he needs an ambulance.'

    i turned my back on my sister and started towards the phone. i was running on auto pilot and i didn't want that pig dying on my floor. i could feel freya's presence as i dialled the numbers. i dropped onto the sofa and rested my head in my left hand. i cleared my throat when i heard a voice on the other end of the line.

    'a man broke into my place and attacked me. he needs help.'

    i gave the woman my address and then we waited. freya disappeared back into my bedroom. i stayed on the sofa.

    as i reached my bedroom door i could hear freya talking quietly to vincent. so obviously the bastard wasn't dead. i stood in the doorway not trusting myself to get any closer. vincent was sitting up, leaning against my bed. freya was kneeling beside him. with blood all over his face and shirt it looked worse than it was.

    Truth be told a big part of me was sorry for that. At least now I didn't have to explain having a dead body in my bedroom. I return to the phone to hear the weird mellow music on the other end was still playing.

    i looked at him like he was speaking a language i couldn't understand. i opened my mouth to say something but a voice interrupted.

    i turned to see another man a bit more than an arm's length away. he was older. maybe in his mid thirties. i'd never been good at gauging people's ages.

    'she's not running away. she just needs some space. let's give it to her. surely we can do that.'

    he smiled and the cop named sean backed off.
