Would one species specifically evolving to our level out of millions of others actually be random? Seems like the opposite of random to me.
Yes, it would be - one minor change in climate or living condition could have made for a random mutation in our DNA - and countless other species' DNA too. It just happened to lead us down one road of evolution, and the others down numerous different roads.Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -
EvilRabbit wrote:Natural selection. Look into it.
Earlier another guy talked of the mathematical impossibility of natural selection. Another retarded creationist argument. Trying to gauge the odds of something by looking BACKWARDS is obviously going to create astronomical odds, but that's not how it works.
If any of you seek the real answers to these questions, they are out there. You simply need to read real science books and not listen to opportunist dickheads like Ray Comfort or Pat Robertson.
Damn..reading comprehension is your friend. If you take notice, I have said that I believe evolution and creationism are the same thing. Pretty sure I didn't get that from Pat Robertson. You know what they say about ASSumptions right? Anyway, so you're telling me that natural selection (which I have looked into) is the reason that we are the ONLY species to evolve to such a high level? And you call us simple minded?? oookkkkkk....
Side note..one thing I've noticed in life is that those who speak in a bold, condescending manner usually are trying to compensate for something. It's easy to insult when you have nothing of any substance to say.0 -

I'm cool with that explanation and agree....I just believe there's something bigger that made it that way. I just don't believe it happened by chance.
Keep in mind, I'm a Christian who believes the Book of Genesis is a metaphor for evolution.0 -
Big Man wrote:you put my quote out of context. You know well that I was refering to your Jesus quote, which was obviously stupid. I said dont talk about stuff you have no idea about. It makes you look silly.
I was simply enjoying the irony of you telling me to educate myself with a grammatically-incorrect sentence. I mean no offense, but you have to see the irony there...
As for talking about stuff we have no idea about... this whole thread is about Ed and Religion (or was). Yet none of us have a clue about his religious views. Sure, you can speculate based on "DTE" or "Marker In The Sand," or comments on stage, but beyond that aren't we all guessing???
I have no idea if Ed is an atheist or whether he truly believes in a god. Neither do you and neither does anyone else here. Are you a screenwriter?

The difference between me and some other atheists on this thread is that I don't have any problem with people believing in a god, or anything. I just have a problem with people who don't accept science.:)Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -
Crazy Breed wrote:man wasn't supposed to have all the answers,we are not Gods even though we are created in his image.
that's why scientists are atheists, their egos can't handle not being able to explain or know how, where, what & why about everything.:D
face it,there are somethings beyond us that no one will ever understand or have full knowledge of.
And I'm fine with that. I'm also fine with people that don't have any faith. It's their choice. I just do not understand people like EvilRabbit who feel the need to be condescending to other people b/c they disagree with him. It's "open minded" bunch being hypocrits again that gets me.
Plenty of folks in this thread have shown there can be an interesting dialogue on this topic, there's only been one douchebag in the thread.0 -

And most of us atheists believe it was a story concocted by people ignorant of the world around them, and that was the best explanation they could come up with based on the evidence available at the time.
I didn't call you simple-minded. Go ahead and assume I did though. Are you a screenwriter?

Well as a believer, it's hard to not accept science when it's staring you in the face. It's just a matter of the source that we disagree on.
Which is fine.0 -

Douchebag? Jesus would be proud of you.
I have only argued for my position because atheists are loathed and persecuted by the vast majority of people in this country. For no good reason. We can be good people, great people, but you paint a portrait of lost, dark, depressed assholes.
Most of us non-believers would be more than happy to let you believe whatever you want in private, but you bring your nonsense into schools, into the minds of children, and into the White House. That affects us and makes us angry. Whereas our atheism does not affect your daily life in any way.
Well, other than prompting you to call people names. Are you a screenwriter?

Although you are back to being a little dickish again. You keep implying things and then saying you didn't out and out say them, i.e. "I didn't say you were simple-minded..." Although in hindsight getting into it with you is a lot more fun than some of the others who have jumped on board today. Seriously, at what point does this shit get moved to Moving Train??
I tried to just be an observer today (I've really been fucking off at work this week- boss's vacation.) but I keep getting pulled in to these things. Here we are, Page 30 and we have yet to unwrap the mysteries of the universe. Who knew, I thought for sure we'd have proven/disproven God by now...0 -
Crazy Breed wrote:I consider myself a Christian but most Christians don't really even know what it means to be a Christian.they practice Roman catholicism which is essentially paganism.
You obviously don't know much either if you think catholicism is paganism, and i'm not even catholic. A little respect on both sides is all it would take to end ridiciulous little comments like this. Right, they worship mary, right they are pegans. Protestants constantly show how little they truly know about christianity. The Official Matt Cameron appreciation signature!0 -

I can't help it. I'm sorry. I guess atheist = dick.
I liked your other phrase. What was it...? dickdouchery. That cracked me up.
Yeah, I was hoping I could have convinced all the believers to abandon their faith by now. I can't understand why it hasn't happened yet. It worked on my dog. She doesn't go to church anymore. Are you a screenwriter?

How about this? I'll give my DC poster to anyone who can prove God exists. That should get this thing settled pretty quick. Are you a screenwriter?

For the record, I prefer douchedickery. Sounds better (to me).

No he's probably not, but I don't think I'm perfect.
You've done a lot more than just argue your position. There are plenty of atheists in this thread that are just arguing their position. You've been a douche. I'm sorry if that's namecalling..but it is what it is. Basic idea here, if you don't like being told you're being a douche..don't be one. It's really simple.
And as far as religion affecting your life...one of our founding fathers said..
"The general principles upon which the Fathers achieved independence were the general principals of Christianity" - John Adams
So in other words, tough shit. Head over to China if you want a secular nation.0 -

You have been a great example of how one argues their opinion w/o being a condescending asshole.
Thank you for that.
Now I'm getting out of this thread b/c EvilRabbit is causing me to sink to his level. I should know better.0 -
