New Guns and Roses after the FIRST listen....

After a few listens I can say only this, it is NOT as bad as it could have been and it is not as bad as some people will say. It is however thoroughly mediocre, unnecessary, dated already and a colossal waste of time and money.
It would have been a solid follow-up if it had been released in like, 1994 or something but it had to be the greatest album ever to justify the wait, the cost and the hype and it is not. It is solid if a little bland."I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0 -
I like this more with every listen. Yes it's overproduced and over-the-top. It kind of reminds me of the 'Be Here Now' album by Oasis. But I liked that album and I like this one. I actually prefer Chinese Democracy to both of the UYI albums, which were so bloated with filler and unfocused as to be almost unlistenable. This album may be a bit dated and doesn't reach the heights of Appetite, but it's one helluva epic rock album. I dig it.she was underwhelmed, if that's a word0

Hmm, Better kind of rocks after a few listens. We'll see when i finish my full record spin. It may hang around for a few weeks but I don't see it getting too many quality plays after that.“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”0

People are saying this a lot, but I agree... this album does get a lot better as I listen to it more and more. Better, If The World, and There Was a Time are the standouts for me. There Was a Time in particular is one of the best GNR songs ever I think. It's a town full of losers and I'm pulling out of here to win0

I just picked it up along with aha shake heartbreak. 2 albums I have no idea if I will like. I love buying music like that. I'll post my "review" later.5/28/06, 6/27/08, 10/28/09, 5/18/10, 5/21/10

I enjoyed it very much. I was apprehensive to say the least but it's pretty good. And it's nice to have a GNR album with all original tracks on it, the first since Appetite. All my favourite singers have stolen all of my best lines.0

For the most part, I (along with many other gnr freaks) have had about most of the album (in leak form) since EARLY 2006. That is nearly 3 years. That being said these songs have gotten the most plays BY FAR from me in that time. I have my itunes set so that i can see the amount of plays ea. song gets. Out of the 4,000 songs I have the ChiDem songs are the most.
I don't really know what my point is. It could be that the songs are great and don't wear out. However, at this point i'm getting bored with them, still like em though. hmmm...i don't really know what i'm trying to say here.
It is #1 on U.S. itunes though!!Whats got the whole world faking?0 -

very weird. I actually enjoyed my first listen a lot. Wasn't expecting that.
the Shecklers tune may be a bit much though“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”0 -

Yeah I'm pretty convinced that Shackler's Revenge blows. It's a town full of losers and I'm pulling out of here to win0 -
Well i finally took a listen to this HYPED up album, not really a big GNR fan but like the odd listen to their greatest hits cd.
Grazman's review. WAY TOOOOOO LONG!!! was relieved when it finished. It was like 14 epic November Rains on 1 album, sounds much more like Use Your Illusion than Appetite after first listen with a bit of NIN and Queen thrown into the mix. There aint no amazing songs like Paradise City, Jungle, Sweet Child etc, just pretty much 14 November Rains with the odd fast one here an there.... and i dont like November Rain. After one listen i have no desire to go back and listen to it again, nothing grabbed me, infact the music sounded very dated, overproduced and boring. Not peed off anyway cos i wasnt even the least bit excited about this being released. YAWN!
Grazman scores it a 5 out of 10It's Evolution, Baby!0 -
Just finished my 1st listen.
(Never heard any of the leaked tracks)
So yeah, it's not going to change the history of music, but it is a DAMN GOOD rock record!"He who hears music, feels his solitude peopled at once" R. Browning0 -
I absolutely love it. It's definitely overproduced in some spots but it never really comes across in a bad way to my ears.... kinda cool actually. It's not raw and incredible like old GNR but I think it's fucking good!! I have no close why some were saying that it's crap....0

not my cup of tea... just based on the first listen... doesnt seem to have a good sense of what it wants to be... there are decent parts to each song... axl's voice is still pretty good on a few tracks... on others he sounds as much like dog the bounty hunter as he looks... just too much in all the wrong places, leaving lots of gaps in other places... cant put my finger on it just yet
itll stay on my ipod and may see some play amongst my 13,000 song shuffle... but thats about it...0 -
It seems like many people are buying it just based on curiousity. The same goes for me.
After my first listen I'll give it a B. Its good, I just don't really like Axl's voice.5/28/06, 6/27/08, 10/28/09, 5/18/10, 5/21/10

I think the album is pretty good, def one of the better rock albums to come out this year. If I have any ocmplaints at all its that it feels a little bit dated, but that is to be expected since its been in the works for 16 years. The whole thing is very epic and feels like a soundtrack to a $400 million dollar blockbuster movie. I did not expect it to be this good and I'm really pleased. Some of my favorite tracks are Better, Chinese Democracy, and Madagascar"Being undecided...it's dangerous. And I'll give you a perfect example: people with mullets, that's indecision."-EV

I'm surprised nobody on these boards has mentioned anything about Catcher In the Rye so far. This is WITHOUT A DOUBT the best song on the album. Just read the lyrics. Right now my favs are Catcher, Sorry, This I Love (love the solo), and I.R.S.Whats got the whole world faking?0

I've talked about Catcher in the Rye plenty. I loved the demo. I don't like the album mix and the removal of Brian May. It's a bloated mess, when I heard the stream for the first time in full, it pissed me off. After that, I though he may have ruined Madagascar too, but thankfully he left that one alone.
Thought it took much better to being stripped down. But, I guess that was 1999? and it's 2008 now. Plenty of time for needless dicking around.
C'mon, there's no comparison. Much cleaner and it's a window into what this could be if Axl didn't have a massive, massive case of OCD.
