very weird. I actually enjoyed my first listen a lot. Wasn't expecting that.

the Shecklers tune may be a bit much though

Yeah I'm pretty convinced that Shackler's Revenge blows.

Well i finally took a listen to this HYPED up album, not really a big GNR fan but like the odd listen to their greatest hits cd.

Grazman's review. WAY TOOOOOO LONG!!! was relieved when it finished. It was like 14 epic November Rains on 1 album, sounds much more like Use Your Illusion than Appetite after first listen with a bit of NIN and Queen thrown into the mix. There aint no amazing songs like Paradise City, Jungle, Sweet Child etc, just pretty much 14 November Rains with the odd fast one here an there.... and i dont like November Rain. After one listen i have no desire to go back and listen to it again, nothing grabbed me, infact the music sounded very dated, overproduced and boring. Not peed off anyway cos i wasnt even the least bit excited about this being released. YAWN!

Grazman scores it a 5 out of 10

    Just finished my 1st listen.
(Never heard any of the leaked tracks)

So yeah, it's not going to change the history of music, but it is a DAMN GOOD rock record!

I absolutely love it. It's definitely overproduced in some spots but it never really comes across in a bad way to my ears.... kinda cool actually. It's not raw and incredible like old GNR but I think it's fucking good!! I have no close why some were saying that it's crap....
  • not my cup of tea... just based on the first listen... doesnt seem to have a good sense of what it wants to be... there are decent parts to each song... axl's voice is still pretty good on a few tracks... on others he sounds as much like dog the bounty hunter as he looks... just too much in all the wrong places, leaving lots of gaps in other places... cant put my finger on it just yet

itll stay on my ipod and may see some play amongst my 13,000 song shuffle... but thats about it...

It seems like many people are buying it just based on curiousity. The same goes for me.

After my first listen I'll give it a B. Its good, I just don't really like Axl's voice.

  • I think the album is pretty good, def one of the better rock albums to come out this year. If I have any ocmplaints at all its that it feels a little bit dated, but that is to be expected since its been in the works for 16 years. The whole thing is very epic and feels like a soundtrack to a $400 million dollar blockbuster movie. I did not expect it to be this good and I'm really pleased. Some of my favorite tracks are Better, Chinese Democracy, and Madagascar

  • I'm surprised nobody on these boards has mentioned anything about Catcher In the Rye so far. This is WITHOUT A DOUBT the best song on the album. Just read the lyrics. Right now my favs are Catcher, Sorry, This I Love (love the solo), and I.R.S.

I've talked about Catcher in the Rye plenty. I loved the demo. I don't like the album mix and the removal of Brian May. It's a bloated mess, when I heard the stream for the first time in full, it pissed me off. After that, I though he may have ruined Madagascar too, but thankfully he left that one alone.

Thought it took much better to being stripped down. But, I guess that was 1999? and it's 2008 now. Plenty of time for needless dicking around.

C'mon, there's no comparison. Much cleaner and it's a window into what this could be if Axl didn't have a massive, massive case of OCD.

I dont care what anyone says about Axl...Whether he is an asshole..a primadonna....nuts...full of himself or WHATEVER....and I also dont care that this was 14 years in the making.....

This is one of the BEST records I have EVER heard...PERIOD...That is all...:D

speaking STRICTLY for myself of course....I LOVE IT!! :)

grabbing this tonight Scott, quite looking forward to it, so far made sure I've avoided all demos etc as just wanted to have an open mind about the finished product..

well I say getting it tonight, thats if I can find the bloody thing, tried two stores yesterday and they had totally sold out

I pick it up yesterday. Never intended to do so, but couldn't resist the urge. After the first few songs I am going to say that, considering all the hype, I am not very impressed. Maybe if I listen to a few times it will grow on me, but it just seems lacking and weak compared to appetite and the use your illusion discs. It is clearly evident that slash is absent from this album. After working on a album for 14 years I had hoped for more, but it is actually just what I expected.

That's how I felt at first too. But trust me, it'll grow on you.

after one listen i wasnt left thinking "good" or "bad", just thought it was very average. sounds like a lot of other music out there today so i will put the generic rock label on it. if your looking for something that everyone at the party can enjoy go for this record. its sure to please the masses. probably wont get many more plays in my house.

Anybody else think he sounds like "the Count" from Sesame Street on the first two verses of "Streets of Dreams"
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

not really, but something about it is a little cheesy. He doesn't sing it that way live though, which is good.

Yeah in some songs he sounds pretty bad... when he goes for that extreme high register it's just kind of aggravating now.

But his mid-range is spot on and sounds better than ever, imo.

And I've said it before, but I'll say it again for added emphasis... Better is kicking my ass right now. Absolutely killer song.

yeah, the lower register stuff is where i hear it. haha

Anyways, Better is a really good song, agreed!

Ever see "Forgetting Sarah Marshall"? He sounds exactly like Jason Segal singing in his Dracula musical.

I like Madagascar, this used to be my favorite "new" song but I'm digging a couple other songs more now. His vocals are ok on it but I've heard him sing it better live.
  • Was it ever gonna meet up to expectations ?

    Was it fuck!

Appetite is still one of the best balls to wall sheer enjoyable rock albums of all time and is a stone cold classic better than any Nirvana album ever was.

UYI could have been much better with some discipline and editing, one album highlighting all the best tracks would have been killer instead of the self indulgent mess both albums were.

Chinese Democracy is fine if you don't go in expecting the reinvention of the wheel, I was plesantly surprised and found myself only starting to cringe when the last 2 tracks appeared, it over produced for sure and the roster of musicians involved is ridiculous but the title track is a blast and I really like Better, a few more listens and who knows what I might think but my 1st is more than happy.

Just think of it as an Axl solo album and it's a bit more easy to swallow. No GNR album without Slash and Duff can be taken seriously as a GNR album, what happens next is anyones gues but I still don't think that proper reunion is completely off the cards.

I couldn't remember where I heard it before and started laughing when I first heard axl spew that aweful attempt at being whatever it was he was going for. Skip to 1:10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5ZtwbzUFZE

As for CD, I think it is a pretty solid album with a lot of great stuff, some mediocre, and a couple of WTF?! were they smoking? moments

    after 2 listens I give it a 7.5/10

It is indeed a great album. I mean Bumblefoot tries to replicate that classic GNR sound, but still adds a little bit of his own style. Great album though as well.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!

I wish i was more familiar with some of these guys guitar work because i'd be intrested to know who plays what leads.
I can pick out most of Bucketheads leads. I'm also thinking Better is a combo of both Buckethead taking the early leads and then Robin Finck playing the bluesier ones at the end.

Who plays the "If the World" and "There was a time" leads?

Also, I think the title track, There was a Time, and Riad n' the Bedouins are my favorites so far.
