I thought Ed sounded great on Conan...yeah his vocal were a little bit softer than the music but I bet it will sound a lot better on the album and live in concert.

I can't agree here. Nope. Eddie's voice was not good last night. It sounded hoarse and just way off. This doesn't ruin the song for me because I haven't really heard it.

It's tough watching a band play in a sterile environment. No crowd to feed off of, turn on and off abruptly for one song, lack of wine, whatever - it's not what we're accustomed to.
It didn't sound great if you watched it, but close your eyes and listen to the track again.
Eddie Vedder has the best voice in the history of Rock! Sure it's changed in the last 19 years or so but it's still basically the same old ed I started listening to in '91. Last night was very uncharacteristic, a steep spike on the time vs. change in voice graph, it would be really stubborn of anyone to deny that...he would never have been able to pull off state of love and trust! Anyway, I'm sure it was just an off day or something...it's physiological when you're putting so much strain on your vocal cords!

This might sound like a cop out, but I wouldn't be surprised if Ed was more worried about remembering all the damn lyrics than being technically correct on every note.
I know when I try to sing something and I'm unsure of the words, I don't exactly sound like Pavarotti, either.

My own little review? It was great to see my guys performing. It was great they were performing new music. It was on TV. It was free. :P They looked great. It made me feel terrific...a new album is coming.
And that is about all. Oh yea...and it was FUN! Thanks for all the posts that agree with me even though I'm posting after you.

About time some else made sense you are not part of the cluless today i'm totally phyched for the upcoming shows ...
Man this is one of my least favorite threads that I've ever read on this board. Really covering a lot of inconsequential crap. EV fat? I think not. EV not sounding good? That song rocked my pants off and I'm pretty sure Ed nailed it from top to bottom, maybe the mix wasn't great - ok. But the facial expressions and the strain in his voice is what makes Ed great, he feels the music so that you can too! I think this song is definitely an omen of some really awesome things headed our way. The Target stuff is pretty ridiculous thing for people to complain about too... it isn't Wal-mart. Sure it is still big corporation and all of that but they got to get the music out somewhere right? And Target isn't going to make them censor their album either. We have to remember that Pearl Jam is still one of the most socially responsible group of celebrities (let alone bands) ever and we have a lot to be proud of where they are concerned. My 2.

I think the song kicks some MAJOR ass. I also think that Eddie's vocals sounded AWFUL broadcast over TV. However, the MP3 sounds SO much better. Still not the best Eddie vocals in the last little while, but definitely enjoyable.

I couldn't agree more with you. I listened to it about three more times last night and watched the video. He didn't sound all that bad, quite honestly he sounded like he may have been a bit under the weather, as he did struggle just a bit at the end. I also think that not being able to hear yourself correctly with such a bad mix doesn't help matters either. All in all the song was fresh and I loved how into it the band was! Did anyone notice him pound his chest with his fist in one of the verses! That's old school Ed "fire" and I loved it!!
Camatose 2 is just a fucking joke of a statement! if anyone thinks the songs sound remotely the same need to go throw their headphones on and listen again. I am not a big fan of comatose as it makes me cringe to hear Ed growl in such a way that it sounds like he is damaging his voice, I just don't care for that style of singing by him. Oh and Kings of Leon... give me a break...please.
Did anyone consider that he may have been under the weather a little bit? Have any of the folks on here tried to sing with a slight chest or head cold? In all this vast knowledge of song structures and "falsetto" singing and all of this other crap I have been reading here lately, has anyone had to perform slightly under the weather in a possible chilly studio with who knows how much time for warm up and whatever nerves come from doing a live TV taping? Plus the man has a new baby, how much is he sleeping? Here's a news flash if your rest isn't right your voice will suffer. I just had to add my 2c about Ed's voice since he has been bashed so much lately and I am not sure why. I am all for opinions and conversation, but a lot of the shit I have been reading on here lately has been downright mean. He is not a fucking machine, some days your body is better than others, that is a fact.

All the criticism about Eds voice is funny to me. I think he is trying to sound the way he did last night. Grainy and raw. It seems like it's just a different approach. Maybe we all got to used to hearing his soft, smooth vocals of Into the Wild and forgot that he can grumble like an animal too. I thought it was fucking great!
I think with all the build-up to last night, folks were hoping for perfection. That's what fans do.
We didn't quite get it, but now we have something to look forward to - the album version
and a song that should kick some major butt live.

Listened to the MP3, take away what people believe to be eddie struggling to sing the song in the faces he makes. Have these people seen him sing before. He's always making those faces. The sound quality on tv on the live feed was crap, but after listening to the MP3 and re-watching via the link provided at audioperv, my concerns are gone. He's never going to be the singer he was at 25 or 26, but he sounded fine for a song that was a rocker. I loved it. I've heard people say "comatose 2", but I don't really get that. Different song structures entirely. Everyone's got their opinion though. Mine is that it kicked ass. Really looking forward to seeing what else the new album will bring.

Agreed about the clothes and weight comments--absolutely retarded. But that is what you get when half your fanbase is middle aged women who read people magazine and spend their time in the "pics where Eddie looks hot" thread.
Also agree that it is about the music. Last night's musical performance was sub par. I can't imagine the band is happy with how it sounded over people's televisions or in studio. For me that's part of what makes PJ great, they want to sound awesome and perform well--they are always looking to improve and evolve, and they want to put on a great show. Despite the fact that if they put out an album barking Christmas carols like dogs and Ed farting in the mic, people on this board would be lap it up, call it "pure genious" and say things like "even Ed farting into a mic is better than most singers on their best day."
