Don't think Eddie sounded as bad as people think....

Listened to the MP3, take away what people believe to be eddie struggling to sing the song in the faces he makes. Have these people seen him sing before. He's always making those faces. The sound quality on tv on the live feed was crap, but after listening to the MP3 and re-watching via the link provided at audioperv, my concerns are gone. He's never going to be the singer he was at 25 or 26, but he sounded fine for a song that was a rocker. I loved it. I've heard people say "comatose 2", but I don't really get that. Different song structures entirely. Everyone's got their opinion though. Mine is that it kicked ass. Really looking forward to seeing what else the new album will bring.

Hmm... I think Ed did have a pretty rough performance, but I agree with most of your post. The MP3 (along with lyrics posted on the board) made me like the song a lot more. I also agree that it wasn't like "Comatose". I think this will be a great album track, but I think Ed's live performances on songs that rock such as this one is fledgling at best these days.

I agree totally. Eddie was kind of low in the audio mix and at times totally off-mike, which gave his performance an unkempt feel. People might be mistaking some of that for struggle.

Reminds me most of Insignificance... and that is just fine with me. I am so far encouraged by the two new songs I've heard. I'm not saying they are my favorite songs by any means, but I'm so far content.

So you'll be skipping the shows this summer then?

Ed's worst nights singing is still better than everyone else's best.

  • I am actually astounded to hear a couple of the comments. Sure, voices change with age, but that is part of the band as they continue, well, being a band. Let me just say ... I loved it. Great song. I have not heard anything off the new album at all. I am psyched for it. And PJ fans criticizing Eddie's voice? Rough. To me, what separates PJ from anything else I've heard is something very individual and simple ... and that's this ... I don't choose to like them. I like them because each time they make a record, each time I see them perform on TV, each time I see them live, they win me over. I connect with them and their music. That is what's personal and individual for me. My enjoyment of their music is completely involuntary. I do nothing but hit play and each and every time they bring it for me. If they didn't, I would just simply say it. But they do. And that goes for Eddie's voice too. It's changed. And I like the change. More mature. Raspy, deep, thoughtful, and familiar. And never monotonous. Lastly, let's just say that I don't think I've ever seen them more on point than the shows they did this past summer in 2008. I look forward to the next 20 years of PJ music, Good Lord willing. God Bless.

Anyone who thinks that was a solid vocal performance is swiming the PJ kool-aid. Hopefully not a sign of things to come and just a bad night. Those cigarettes may be taking their toll. The sound was horrible (on what is probably a rad song).

The highlight of the night was when eddie jumped on the drum stage so he didn't look like a midget next to Conan.

Ya, that was pretty blatantly obvious :)

I really liked the song though, and Ed's voice was pretty good, but could have been better in my opinion,

Agreed. I mentioned that last night and had a number of nasty comments directed my way...

Anyways, Ed sounded like complete shit and he was struggling the entire way through that 2.5 minute song (or whatever it was).
  • I think Ed struggled because it is just hte kind of song he struggles on. He never sings Lukin, Evolution or Comatose very well, in my uneducated opinion, because they are too quick for him and he can't quite hit those notes. However, on the records all of those songs sound great. For me, there are two types of Pearl Jam song, those that sound better live and thsoe that Ed just can't quite nail. Maybe this was just the second type.

As for peope suggesting Ed is getting too old. Neal Young, Dylan, etc, are still making great sounding records; saying Ed is too old is like saying he was too young 18 years ago - a load of ****
we're all going to the same place...

I thought it was a very typical Eddie performance - perfect! It doesn't matter b/c on these threads people just complain and attack! After thirty PJ shows -cant wait to see them again

Yeah...I think the voice issues are from the sound in the studio. I've watched the clip a few times at various levels of volume and I think Ed sounds like Ed. Only time I thought for a second there was a voice issue was right in the beginning vocals, but then realized he was down in the mix. After that I thought it was fine.

Oh..and people reading into the facial ticks as something to do with a problem vocally obviously haven't watched them much over the last 18 years!? That's Vedder! Come on people..stop reading into every.single.nuance.

Sometimes its frustrating coming on here. Sure some my like the song..some may not..that's part and parcel of having your own opinion...but come on..."He scrunched his face at the 2:10 mark..so it must mean he is suffering from mass cutaneous throat discombulation..."

    Yeesh.

I thought Ed's performance was quite 2005 Cornell-ish. Hopefully not a sign of things to come.

I never said fat...minor weight gain perhaps...just around the cheeks. Like what happened to me when I quit smoking...never said fat - he's far from fat, and still hot!
