I can understand it if they did the Target commercial. What probably happened was that Target approached Cameron about it, and he asked the guys to do it. I believe that they would do it if he asked them to. Now the exclusivity, I just can't see that being true.

Ha, no way that's true.

this board has gone a bit bonkers today about all this, everything is getting locked down.
I'm just a bit confused as to why.
Its all over the internet so surely this would be the place to discuss these rumours? which is for now all they are.
anyone who wants to start hating Pj for working with target really needs to go find a life. Shock horror muscians wanting to make money
Yeah, how dare they promote themselves! anyone with a number below 181xxx that is now no longer a fan of PJ because they are corporate sellouts, please feel free to give me your number.
I think that PJ only has themselves to blame for the fan "confusion" over their stance on advertisers.
We ARE after all talking about a band who refused to play in an arena until a "Bud Light" sign was covered up. Or Ed bashing Jewel for aligning her song Intuition with a product of the same name... or not performing on Letterman that time unless the whole show was commercial-free (wow, was that overkill) or other similar anti-advertising, anti-corporate ideals.
They're the ones who built themselves up, and were very vocal about it.
I don't mind that Jewel sold her music to Schick (or whoever) but I appreciate what PJ did with their own music, frankly. PJ's music is not the same as Jewel's pop music.
Now PJ wants to make more money, so I believe they HAVE compromised their principals to do so. I noticed at their VA Beach show that Bud Light was PJ's sponsor for the show, and most bands did not have a sponsor, yet PJ did. So it's extremely hard to say that PJ did not do a 1000000% turnaround on a number of things.
Will I still listen and enjoy their music? Of course! But when I hear "green disease", I do laugh inside a bit.

Don't understand all the "sell-out" talk. Have some faith in the boys. If the exclusive rumors are true, I would guess they were able to negotiate things like more evironmentally friendly manufacturing and distribution. And if you don't agree I suggest giving up your 10C # because mine is pretty friggin high.
...btw, did I read that two guys were able to buy the album at a certain retail outlet yesterday?
Where'd you read that, out of curiosity? (If you're allowed to say..)
someone said it on a thread last night that is now deleted. it may have been a joke. if no one on here collaborates it then I'll assume it is incorrect. I had speculated on what I thought all these clues meant, but since the thread I wrote it on was deleted, I'll assume I should not speculate again.

Not sure if people know this, but Target has in-store promotional videos that play in their electronics areas.
And knowing that Pearl Jam likes playing live/making live videos, its not really a stretch of the imagination to realize that this is probably just a promo video for Target, that has NO bearing on the album being exclusive to them.

stop making sense....some people need to have their moral indignation
I'm disappointed in their commercial direction too, however, I understand it.
My view on the last 20 years (in general):
Early 1990's - PJ becomes HUGE practically overnight. Everybody loves them, and they're a bit uncomfortable with it. They're idealistic and any sponsorships are not wanted. They're making more money than they ever thought they could, all in a VERY short timeframe. They have what they consider "enough" to be comfortable for a very long while, and I imagine they donate a bit of their money too. They battle TM on our behalf and cripple their tour in the process. No other bands join their cause which leaves them frustrated. They have inner turmoil and fire a band member and hire another one.
Mid 1990's - They notice that with a change in direction in their lineup and music that sales are not as high as they used to be. They're thinking "maybe being more moderately successful is a more comfortable pace anyway". PJ is still selling out arenas. They agree to play Letterman, but only if there are absolutely no commercials, because they really are that hard-core.
Late 1990's Early 2000's - PJ is thinking: Man is it tough to sell albums. What's this Napster thing? Hmm... well, I'm sure our fanbase will still buy our albums. What do you mean a couple of venues still have tickets available? We all just had kids and bought bigger houses and need the cash! Ed is cursing at Jewel for licensing her song to Schick for a razor commercial, but is quietly wishing he could find a happy medium to do the same.
Mid 2000's to now - PJ is thinking: Well, we'll never make money on the albums anymore. We simply have to double and triple ticket prices from what they used to be to make up for it. Still not able to bring in all the money we want? Well, let's sell the music to CBS programming and license the music to Rockband. Even more... hmm, what do we have lying around that we can sell. Oh let's re-release Ten. Aw, hell, let's re-release EVERYTHING!
...I mean, it's a shame that people aren't paying for their music and that has affected them so dramatically, but between that and their increased wants and needs, they then have to figure ways to bring in more and more money. Playing casinos, having "Bud Light Presents Pearl Jam" on their listing at a venue, licensing their music to corporate america, raising ticket prices... these are all things I think they would have choked on 10-15 years ago. I think their previous stance against anything even close to this is what is biting them back.

Waiting to hear from the band, but if confirmed that this is a commercial and/or exclusive deal with Target, yes, I would be disappointed. Not saying I'd hate the band, or stop listening to their music, or stop attending their concerts. But disappointed??? DEFINITELY.
Just my 2 cents. :( :( :(
