Convicted? Yes.
Reasonable doubt? Yes.
You have to concede the whole situation is fishy.

.what with DNA evidence and the likes these days surely they could get off if they had anything to go off? Obviosuly I should read the case before going further.'
"....and much more importantly, DNA and other forensic technologies have progressed to the point where items that were previously inadequate for testing are now providing the positive proof that Damien, Jason and Jessie have been waiting over a decade for.
The results of recent DNA testing have revealed that these three men couldn't have been involved in the murders because not one cell of genetic material has been identified that matches them. The nature of this crime as put forth by the State of Arkansas makes it very unlikely that the perpetrator could have committed it without leaving even the smallest trace behind. DNA evidence was, however found that matches a pair of individuals who had been together on the day the children disappeared. One of these individuals is the stepfather of one of the victims......."
When it comes to the delay between Ed writing the letter and posting it, I'm wondering if he does the same thing I do with my holiday postcards... buy them, write them and..... bring them back home in the suitcase because there 'wasn't really an opportunity' to mail them!
well lets turn that around, what if it was your kid? would you be so concerned about judicial fairness then?
If it were my kid, I would want to skin the GUILTY person alive. In this very publicised case, even just having the slightest doubt that the right people/person were in jail and having to look at people around wondering if it could then be them, would tear me apart. The would be absolutely NO closure.
i would love to hear ed weigh in on this issue here... ive always have been a little curious just what he saw in this case and i think him and speedy could have a good debate... if its simply a matter of civil liberties for ed then there HAS to be a better case to get involved with... definitely too much taint here to tie your good name to IMO... i usual see eye-to-eye with ed... if we are taking what speedy says as fact (and i always do) then i am torn... hmm

Damien Echols arrest records are available .....
it would take you 5-10 minutes here on the computer to find out all you need to know about Damien Echols....
and once you read the FACTS about Damien Echols and his mental history and his criminal history.......
you may want to take a breath and ask yourself....
"Why the fuck is Eddie Vedder supporting this piece of human garbage"
Take me piece by piece..... Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
Im glad that Mr. Vedder gave us Damien Echols address in prison....SO we can all write Mr. Echols a letter...
Because i would be glad to write Mr. Echols a letter and let him know that a hope he ROTS IN PRISON...
FOR MURDERING and MUTILATING little boys......
I would be glad to let Mr. Echols know that I think he is a sick and disgusting piece of human garbage.
You know, Speedy... you have every right to exercise your freedom of speech and do whatever you want - such as writing a nasty letter to Damien.
What you just said has motivated me to write a letter to both Damien and an email to Lorri next week after things have settled down at home.
AND.... I am going to donate to the defense fund. I was not going to say anything because I don't believe in "Look at what I did! This is what I did and you all should be doing the same thing!" and don't dare saying I am doing this because of Eddie Vedder.
Had it not been for EV, I would have never known about the case. At first I didn't believe they were innocent but after so much reading, something indeed is fishy. And they have the right to prove that they didn't do it and I am going to support them.
I am the mother of four beautiful children and I'd want to make sure it was the RIGHT person(s) who murdered my children.
"Fuck Cincy!!!" You sound like a broken record... it was the best show in 2006 for me.
I got a new phrase.... "Fuck C3!!!" hehehehehehehehehe!!!!
But that would bring too much negativity on the board because that was my experience, not everyone else.
Anyhoo... thanks Speedy for your encouragement and motivating me to do more, it's greatly appreciated!!

No one has said that Damien Echols is a model human being, or that he is even a nice guy, but aren't you minimizing the whole point: did he commit this crime. Sorry, but last time I checked we strive to not incarcerate people on their moral standing or what stupid shit they have said in the past. (If that were the case, I could think of lots of folks that would be behind bars right now, including myself). And secondly, since when does spending time in mental hospital make you a criminal?!!

There is a lot of 'info' on Damien out there. Lots of facts, exaggeration, misinformation, stuff taken out of context, etc. All of this getting mixed up and put forth as 'truth'. Echols is not the kind of kid I would have liked to have, not your model citizen, but I still believe that EVERYONE - weird or not - deserves fair justice. Should this fair process take place, the RIGHT bad guys are in jail and the innocent need not fear the system. Utopic? Probably.

if you were committed to a mental hospital because you are dangerous to yourself and others than i would say that comes into the case as reasonable suspicion... obviously not solid proof to these specific crimes... but its hard for any jury not to have that in the back of their mind regardless of other evidence... and not to get into any "minority report"-esque pre-crime shit but maybe its for the best for this guy to be locked up somewhere if hes really a hazard to the people around him... maybe another mental institution rather than a prison... but either way... id just rather not see ed connected to something like this... especially in a thread titled "letter bout xmas single"

Fair enough....but I still get pissed when I see folks making assumptions (like speedy) that someone is guilty based upon past actions or problems. The question is whether or not Echols committed murder, not whether or not he is a sketchy person.
id just rather not see ed connected to something like this... especially in a thread titled "letter bout xmas single"
Again, as with the cartoonist, I don't think Ed is 'connecting' himself to a person, rather a cause and a big one too - justice and fair proceedings for all. It's not just about Damien, it's about the whole system and miscarriages of justice (more common than one thinks). I suppose those that are a bit more involved in activism may understand a bit better where he's coming from.
i understand very well if someone is angre about a murderer and especially when the victims are childrens...but everyone has the right to fight from his freedom..even the worst person, who did the worst acts..most of the wars are in the name of freedom, and democrasy..and we cant do the court in here,,if some of you cant respect the rights of the persons who are in jail, you have to respect the memory of the children and dont be make it a courthouse here..and i dont know if eddie have to write that to the fans and put us in ,but i admire him that he try to help a friend..

threatening people is not the same thing as doing something.. there's lots of threatening violent acts on the internet for example, including on this board.. and afaik he was never arrested for actually attempting any of those acts.
the fact someone is mentally ill does not make them a criminal...most mentally ill people are far more a danger to themselves than to others.
And even when they are you still can feel sorry for them (and I've worked, as an admin, on acute mental health wards, with sometimes people that committed violent crimes, including murder...fully proven ones.)
Life is not black and white.
I'm not saying he didn't do it, I looked a bit at this few months ago and found fishy things on both sides of the argument.
But the very fact there is doubts and big procedural mistakes (and past history is NOT proof, there are only circumstantial evidences in this case, no physical one..and witnesses that keep changing their mind) is enough that things should be examined thoroughly and systematically. We're not talking about technicality here but serious misgivings.
Especially as one is on death row..there's been many cases of people executed and later completely exonerated...but it's too late.
Anyway, if you don't want to give money (I don't either), nobody forces you to.
Again, as with the cartoonist, I don't think Ed is 'connecting' himself to a person, rather a cause and a big one too - justice and fair proceedings for all. i get what the issue is... THUS ed is connected to a shady individual (regardless of guilt)
thats an awfully subtle way of tooting your own horn
Not tooting a horn at all. I am not particularly activist - certainly not half as what Ed seems to be, but there are causes I do believe in and I will do my little bit for it. What I was trying to say is that if people have been involved in some kind of activism (even low level), they may just see things differently and understand a bit better. That's all. Same kind of thing that if you are a parent, you may understand issues dealing with children a bit better than those that do not have kids, etc. Nothing more.

Most issues will be 'connected' to a person/a number of people - whether they are beautiful, perfect and 'spotless' or not quite 'clean'. It is the issue that is important. A potential miscarriage of justice (with possible death penalty) is very serious and I would have thought, most of the time very gray areas. I'm sure someone with absolutely no record, no history, etc. would not so easily fall in this kind of 'trap'.
Ed is sharing his thoughts/feelings on these issues (he does also speak about the 'trestles' issue) - no one needs to look into it/help if they do not feel comfortable - he is not asking that.
Looks like this thread is looking more an more like a thread one would find on 'Moving Train' !
May 19, 1992, seventeen year old Damien Echols was arrested with his fifteen year old girlfriend Deanna Holcomb for breaking into a vacant trailer. They were running away together and, at the time of apprehension, were caught partially dressed and in the closet. According to his arrest report, Echols was charged with burglary and sexual misconduct. He was later convicted of breaking and entering and second degree sexual misconduct. He was remanded to Craighead County Juvenile Detention Center. While in detention, he expressed a plan for suicide, to tie sheets together and hang himself. He was sent to Charter Hospital in Little Rock for intervention and stayed there for a little over three weeks.
Echols seemed to believe there were more charges than this, telling his psychiatrist he was also charged with disorderly conduct and terroristic threatening, charges which he denied. Although not charged with making threats, he described his thoughts to his therapist
. . . while he was waiting in the police car to be taken to juvenile detention or jail following having been arrested, that he witnessed his girlfriend's father coming toward her as she waited with police offers in an aggressive manner. Damien states that he was able to work his fingers loose, moved over and was able to slip the safety off of the police officer's gun which had been left in the police vehicle. Damien freely admitted he had plans to shoot the girlfriend's father if he acted in an aggressive manner toward the girl. (p. 383, Exhibit 500. Page references below are also Exhibit 500 unless otherwise noted.)
Take me piece by piece..... Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....

So... does that mean the father was abusive and there were risks of him hurting/beating up his daughter? Could this then not be thought of Damien wanting to protect her SHOULD this happen (and not just 'I'm gonna kill you' threat)? Should the father not be investigated for domestic abuse?
See... words can be presented/twisted any old way.....
