Lowe won't get 18 mil a year like Zito, but I can see him getting 15 or 16 mil for 4 years.

According to Ken Davidoff of Newsday, the Mets, Phillies, and Dodgers have expressed interest in free agent outfielder Raul Ibanez. Ibanez would replace Pat Burrell in Philly, and is a backup plan for the Dodgers if they fail to sign Manny Ramirez. The Cubs and Royals may also get involved, but both clubs face payroll limitations currently.

Interest from four NL clubs means Ibanez could remain an outfielder for his age 37-39 seasons, a dicey proposition. He allowed 18 more bases than the average left fielder in 2008, according to the plus/minus system. Ibanez hit .293/.358/.479 in 707 plate appearances, earning just $5.5MM in the last year of his contract. He should be able to double his salary in '09.

does anyone else agree with me that the phils fucked this up? they have mismanaged numerous injury situations over the last few years. i think it was obvious to most people that chase was injured when he started struggling back in june/july. i wonder if someone in the organization would have stepped up and got him examined by a doctor that he may have only missed a few weeks. instead he continued playing and it probably got worse and now we probably wont have him for the first 2 months of next season...when we typically struggle anyway.

dont get me wrong--i am ecstatic that we are WORLD CHAMPIONS but i think the phils dropped the ball on this one

I totally disagree.. I think he was examined during the season and the injury wasn't bad enough to warrant shutting him down for the season, as long as he felt he could play with it, as he did and couldn't do anymore damage by playing.

I think they had a fairly good idea that the injury would only get better with surgery and sitting for any period of time would do no good... so as long as Chase wanted to play and couldn't hurt himself more, he played... rather have him miss the 1st month or so of the season this year (although someone better set up if he does) then shut him down with 2 months left in a season.

I really hope that this off season recovery allows Chase to "fatten up" a bit... he comes into spring training so slim and in shape that I think it hurts him as the season wears on...

True, the Phils can solve their depth problem in the middle if and add some speed to the bench very easily.

Bring back Nick Punto - the original bench dog. He'll be cheap, can play 2nd, SS and 3rd is an excellent fielder who is always on web gems and hit .284 last year. Perfect utility role player along with Bruntlett.

Yeah, but isn't Punto in Minny? It looks like what they're gonna do is platoon Bruntlett and Donald, which I'd like to see personally. They could even possibly bring back Iguchi now. I mean at the worst he'll miss up until the end of May, and I don't see him missing that much time.

Punto is a free agent. He'll cost much less than Taguchi who made almost 4 mil last year.

Yeah, but Iguchi is definitely not making that much this year. I don't know - I don't like welcoming ex-Phils who were around during the days of Travis Lee, Tomas Perez, Lieby, Brogna's, Glanville's and the such. I know there's a lot of over rating going on here, but I'd like to see Donald get some actual playing time. Ya think Marson is the back-up next year?

EDIT: Also, Punto made 2.4 mil last year and I think Iguch made liek 3.6 or something. So I can gurantee Iguchi doesn't make that amount next year. So if we sign Tad for like 2.5-2.75 is fine with me.

I think they chose the beginning of next season over middle/end of last year. I think they probably new he was going to need surgery but if they did it in July/August of last year he was going to be done for the season. I think they did the right thing but that is easy to say since they won the World Series. It's a bit scary though as hips can be bad injuries for athletes. Hopefully it won't be anything that effects him long term career-wise.

Mark my words.. Iguchi will get about $4 mill next season. I have no problem with bringing Punto in especially since he can play 3rd but I wouldn't mind seeing Donald get a shot at playing 2nd for a bit.. although that's all it would be, a few weeks at 2nd then back down to the minors so don't know if that would help or hurt him in the long run.

If the Yanks trade Cano for Peavy, I can see them giving him a 2 for 8 or 3 year for 12 mil deal. I mean he does have 2 rings which is more than most of the Yanks these days. ;)

If the Yanks trade Cano for Peavy, I can see them giving him a 2 for 8 or 3 year for 12 mil deal. I mean he does have 2 rings which is more than most of the Yanks these days. ;)

I don't see a guy who had career lows get paid more than what he got this year. Yeah, that is crazy he's got two rings....I think it's just crazy that EVERYONE gets a ring when you win....Which reminds me that I'm waiting on my own.

Hopefully it won't be anything that effects him long term career-wise.

different injury obviously--but he had surgery in the middle of the 07 season and came back sooner than expected and we still made the playoffs (really didnt miss a beat while he was gone). i just think the phils got lucky on this one. he could have made it a lot worse playing everday no matter what ruben amaro says.

agreed - i always cringe when they say someone can't hurt it worse by playing - of course you can -every injury can be made worse.

In a swap of former first-round picks, the Phillies have dealt outfield prospect Greg Golson to the Rangers for outfield prospect John Mayberry. Mayberry, 24, split the 2008 season between double-A Frisco and triple-A Oklahoma and hit a combined .264 with 38 doubles, 20 home runs, 71 RBIs and 10 steals in 135 games. Golson, 23, batted .282 with 13 home runs, 60 RBIs and 23 steals at double-A Reading. According to Amaro, the Phillies preferred Mayberry's power to Golson's speed.

Does anyone like myself have the notion that Amaro may start making moves just to put his own stamp on the team? Not to get paranoid, but I wouldn't be a Philadelphian if I thought otherwise...

I have no problem with this deal.. especially with the deer in the headlights looks Golson had at the plate during his end of the season call up... Plus if Mayberry pans out he could be a reasonable righthanded bat in LF.

Righthanders Carlos Carrasco and Drew Naylor, lefthander Sergio Escalona and catcher Joel Naughton were added to the 40-man roster, Senior Vice President and General Manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. announced today.

Carrasco, 21, combined to go 9-9 with a 3.69 ERA between 25 starts (26 games) for triple-A Lehigh Valley and double-A Reading. He was selected for both the Eastern League mid-season All-Star team and the World Team roster at MLB’s All-Star Futures Game at Yankee Stadium in July. Carrasco ranked second in the Phillies’ minor league system with 155 strikeouts in his 151.1 innings and fifth in ERA.

A native of Australia, Naylor, 22, split the season between single-A Lakewood and single-A Clearwater. In 14 starts for Lakewood he went 5-3 with a 2.99 ERA and two complete games. In his 165.1 innings between both stops, Naylor struck out 156 batters, the most in the Phillies’ system this season.

Escalona, 24, went 0-1 with one save and a 2.22 ERA in 15 games for Reading. He posted a 1.89 ERA (4 ER, 19.0 IP) over his final 11 games of the season after posting a 3.38 ERA over his first four appearances. Escalona also appeared in 12 games for Mesa in the Arizona Fall League.

Another native Australian, Naughton, 22, hit .275 with two home runs and 33 RBI in 86 games for Lakewood. He hit .406 in August, ending the season with a six-game hit streak in which he batted .500 (13-for-26).

PCP Take:Carlos Carrasco is the key name here, he needed to be placed on the 40-man to keep out of the rule 5 draft. The question with him is, would the Phillies give him a legit shot at competing for the fifth spot in the rotation? I am not sure he would open the season with the big club, but he sure can pitch is way into a spot with a good spring and at the very least be this year’s J.A. Happ.

I don’t see him starting the season in the bullpen, but starting the season at AAA Lehigh Valley is certainly in the cards and now being on the 40-man roster he will be a candidate for a call-up if someone in the rotation gets injured.
