I can imagine it can't be nice. It's weird really cause I did used to get picked on a bit when I was a teenager. I had long hair and dressed grungey so used to get called 'gay' and stuff like that, cause rock music was not really as widely accepted ten years ago as it is now. But I never really cared that much to be honest.
Cause everyone knows the grunge scene was so gay.
Guess it affects everyone differently. It doesn't really bother me now, as it doesn't happen very often, but when it did it really used to get to me. I was a very different person back then aswell, and I think that if I got a lot of abuse for it now, I wouldn't be as bothered.

I disagree. Attractiveness doesn't come into it, at least over here in the UK. Everyone does it because it's socially accepted, and they all think it's harmless fun. But what if it happened every day? Not just from people who you didn't like, or didn't know, but from people who are supposed to be your friends, who KNOW it bothers you but continue to taunt you about it anyway. And to be in the classroom and have the teachers do it. I used to have a maths teacher who would say "shut up ginger" every time I used to say anything. Everyone else thought it was hillarious, of course. And then to go home and have your family do it. And to walk down the street and have some person you don't even know shout at you, and people in passing cars. This STILL happens to me.
Well I'm sorry to read this, unfortunatly the "obvious solution" is to muller them up. Course, this isn't always a viable or sensible(it mostly is) option but it's what they deserve. What jamieuk alluded to is the truth, it''s the same type of people, Remain unfettered and ity escalates, choose your mates carefully.
As for the explainers givin out here, they need to fuck off back to their sewing circle what with their smuggy croaking shite
"Your fucking damaged goods!"is a nice and true response, especially to some rancidold mousse.
Sober now.......um,I don't feel all that strongly about it actually.
I agree with you, and I wanted to post something along those lines but I didn't bother, as I knew no one would take it seriously.
It's just about the only form of social prejudice you're allowed thesedays, and I don't think people outside the UK realise just how much abuse you can get for it. Next time someone does it to me (doesn't really happen anymore as my hair isn't as red as it used to be...not greying, it's just got darker ) I should follow them down the street shouting "Hey look everyone, this guy's an immature prejudiced TW*T! Hahaha, look, he's a tw*t!" That's pretty much equivalent to what we get over here.
Well, I'm not actually Dave, just spiritually I suppose. Like I've said to you in the past, people find anyone that is slightly different somewhat scarey and the easiest thing for most of the knuckle heads around is to be prejudice. They don't even realise.
People here saying it's not the same thing as racial prejudice, well obviously it's not on the scale because there isn't the history, but to an individual of course it's the same. Especially to a child, and some people struggle to get over that.
Like I said, I'm not red haired, but in the Welsh valleys Comprehensives of the 1980's, there were no black people, perish the thought of what might have happened if there had been. Kids took stick for anything, I have kind of 'olive' skin so I was ridiculed for that, I also have curly hair which apparently is a crime!
Dave is right, immature prejudice is what it is.
All you lot trying to trivialise the name calling should own up to yourselves, you should realise that whatever you may think or believe, it is actually wrong, and extremely unpleasant especially as I say for kids. And until 'grown ups' realise that, then it will simply continue. I'm all for a laugh, but let's have a bit of respect for each other eh?
Great post, J and never a truer word said. A bit o' respect goes far in this world

Newsflash for you, we don't judge people on their haircolor over here.
This is a totally new thing for me to hear about and quite frankly it is pretty pathetic.
Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away

No.... i was talking about the fact someone confused Australians as "(having) a big mouth, and over inflated sense of their own importance"
when it's trully the US of A. Just setting them right. They seemed confused is all... nothing to do with Gingers
Nah, no confusion We'll add 'completely ignorant to the fact that the rest of the world finds them completely ignorant' to the list of stereotypes shall we?
p.s....not you Jeanie
Phew!!! **wipes brow** I feel better now!!
You gotta watch out for them young, dumb, fulla....oh yeah, well just watch out hey???
As to gingers, well mostly we nickname em all Blue here.
And I'm sure that many of you are well aware of my ginger fetish.

Opposite of red I guess, I dunno, I'll go hunt up the origins but yeah, clearly not blue. I guess we've always done it. I can't count how many red head friends I've got that have the nickname Blue.
I never even realized but someone mentioned it to me and then I noticed, a greater percentage of my friends and guys I've dated have been red headed. I think it's lovely.

I too have a ginger fetish... can't cook a stir fry without it
um.... i don't care for Blue... yes in the past it was common to call them blue... but... I have had my eyes opened... calling them ginger... and carrot top... but i surely use it as a term of endearment...
blue is far from calling someone a ginger minge heh

yeah I'd be interested to know the origins of that funny ol' nickname!
I always used to feel sorry for my twin bro' growing up cuz he got picked on so much for being ginger... I never realised i'd end up with one!

maybe the hate for gingers stems from people being Albino.... hmmmm i just thought of that. Not that i really hate either Ginge Minge's or Albinoes.... i have never associated with either of them.

Ginger in cooking is good.
Ginger hair is also lovely, or blue, whatever you want to call it. I usually go with whatever the person prefers.
Don't know too many that have a preference for being called carrot top.

At the pub where I used to work there was an albino guy who used to walk past at the same time every morning... we called him 'Whitey'.
He looked like Whitey from Me, Myself and Irene.
Lovely bloke

Having trouble finding the origins but here's a few little bits.
It's possible it just evolved like so many of these things did.
Blue is an affectionate term though. I recall someone saying to me once that it was because it's the opposite of red and that red heads are firey and more inclined to blue. (as in argue) but bluey is also considered like "me old mate" and very much a good thing.

Just curious. Your comment that your area is 500% white and there is no one else to pick on struck me as funny.
