Haha, whilst we're on about talking in stereotypes I suppose an Australian with a big mouth, and over inflated sense of their own importance is very apt
The only thing I may need hair dye for is to take out the impending threat of greyness, silly boy/girl.

Nah, no confusion We'll add 'completely ignorant to the fact that the rest of the world finds them completely ignorant' to the list of stereotypes shall we?
It's a pathetic, childish, sly and nasty way of allowing prejudice to be acceptable.
I've heard al the stuff, same as we all have, but it's always annoyed me a bit. People who subscribe to such thoughts must be incredibly thoughtless at the very least, also I wonder how most find it acceptable to ridicule and stigmatise a person based on the colour of their hair?? Do you have the same warped fears of someone with a different skin colour?? Oh no, of course not, perish the thought......you sure?
Didn't realise you were "one of us" Jamie.
I agree with you, and I wanted to post something along those lines but I didn't bother, as I knew no one would take it seriously.
It's just about the only form of social prejudice you're allowed thesedays, and I don't think people outside the UK realise just how much abuse you can get for it. Next time someone does it to me (doesn't really happen anymore as my hair isn't as red as it used to be...not greying, it's just got darker ) I should follow them down the street shouting "Hey look everyone, this guy's an immature prejudiced TW*T! Hahaha, look, he's a tw*t!" That's pretty much equivalent to what we get over here.

I think people are perhaps taking this too seriously. Bottom line, if you are an attractive ginger there isn't really an issue at all. Plenty of hot red-head celebrities out there like Nicole Kidman, Isla Fisher and Sarah Wayne Callies
I'm not so sure about the blokes, Ewan McGregor is a bit of a ginge though and that hasn't really held him back!
I think saying it's AS bad as racial abuse is maybe taking it a bit far, but it still shouldn't be tolerated. Why should people be made to feel inferior because of the colour of their hair? This is what happens a lot in the UK. Attractivness isn't really relevant.

Oh it's a tricky subject for sure. The point I was making, is that if you are an attractive person, hair colour doesn't really matter so much because people are more struck by your good looks than your hair colour. I think people get picked on for all sorts of things anyway. I got shit at school becasue I had long hair, people used to think they were really original shouting 'Kurt Cobain' at me, but I just ignored it. Kids will pick up on anything that isn't the norm - what's to say these ginger kids wouldn't get picked on for something else if they didn't have red hair?
I get teased by my mates because I have ginger sideburns (despite having dark blonde/ light brown hair) and I find it quite funny, it's harmless and to me, it's kind of one of those ironic insults - like everyone knows there isn't really anything wrong with having ginger hair, but they are making out like there is, like in that South Park episode where Cartman says they have no soul!

I disagree. Attractiveness doesn't come into it, at least over here in the UK. Everyone does it because it's socially accepted, and they all think it's harmless fun. But what if it happened every day? Not just from people who you didn't like, or didn't know, but from people who are supposed to be your friends, who KNOW it bothers you but continue to taunt you about it anyway. And to be in the classroom and have the teachers do it. I used to have a maths teacher who would say "shut up ginger" every time I used to say anything. Everyone else thought it was hillarious, of course. And then to go home and have your family do it. And to walk down the street and have some person you don't even know shout at you, and people in passing cars. This STILL happens to me.
To you it might seem harmless, but the trend in this thread seems to be from people who actually have ginger hair, is that it does more harm than people might think.

Hmm, if a teacher called me ginger I would have replied with "shut up cunt face", but that's just me....
The problem you have here, is that there is no obvious solution, and also it is kind of self-perpetuating because people do react to it. As much as you disagree, I do still believe that if a red-head is good looking, they are far less likely to suffer the abuse a less attractive red-head would. Obviously it is wrong to pick on someone for a physical characteristic, but in reality we are all guilty of it. We all look twice when we see a huge person in a mobility scooter, or someone dressed a bit 'differently' and I'm sure we are all guilty of making comments about them for our own amusement. Would it make any difference if we all patted each other on the back for being so politically correct? I don't think so. In my view, most decent right-thinking people, are perfectly capable of looking past any superficial shit like hair colour anyway - the only people who would make take the piss out of you to your face, are the kind of people who would pick on anything different in a person.

I don't have a problem anymore. I'm not a child, and thankfully i've got a lot more confidence than I did then. So when people do take the piss, I either ignore them, or i'll pick someone about them to make fun of to see how they like it. People don't like it, you'd be surprised to hear.

Wow. I have gone my whole life without really having a problem due to my red hair. I didn't realize that some folks really have a hard time with it. A few people here and there have mentioned it... and my friends to refer to me as a spitfire... but I attribute that as much to my personality as my hair.
I mean I got picked on...but no more or less then your average teenager.
Maybe it is just because my hair is more of an auburn then a bright red?

Probably. My twin brother is as ginger as ginger can be and he's suffered with other people's 'jokes' (ha de fucking ha  ) and insults for having red hair for years.

Ah you have no idea, I'm a bit 'react first, think later'. It kind of shocks people, because I'm quite quiet and people don't expect it from me. But if someone puts me down I have no issue speaking up - and there is no way I would have put up with being bullied by a fucking teacher. But I do appreciate where you are coming from, I know plenty of people wouldn't speak up.

Well if the cap fits......nah I'm only kidding, I'm just pointing out that some people are blessed with good looks and others aren't, and a good looking face can get a person a long way.

I don't think that is necessarily the case, I have a few friends with red hair, and they suffer no real issues because of it. In fact the one mate is incredibly popular with the ladies regardless of his ginger hair. I've just got back from a holiday with a few of them, and one night out these amazingly hot Swedish girls came and asked me and two friends if we wanted to go to a club with them. We happily obliged, and they promptly spent the entire night fawning over my red-head mate - and good for him!
I bet that there is an equivalent of being 'ginger' in most cultures around the world. Of course it sucks, and it is absolutely wrong, but what can you do about it?
Probably. My twin brother is as ginger as ginger can be and he's suffered with other people's 'jokes' (ha de fucking ha  ) and insults for having red hair for years.
My little bro has hair that was more red than mine growing up (it was fire engine red, and stood straight up as a baby). As far as I know he was never picked on much for it either.
I used to highlight my hair all the time, and have only recently gotten the last bit of that cut off so I am back to my natural color.
I have to say I get more compliments on my hair now then I ever did when I had more blonde in my hair. Guys seem to dig it too, with the exception of a certain hyper-opinionated aussie here on the board.
Oh, and I live in the US.... It would seem that makes a difference.

I can imagine it can't be nice. It's weird really cause I did used to get picked on a bit when I was a teenager. I had long hair and dressed grungey so used to get called 'gay' and stuff like that, cause rock music was not really as widely accepted ten years ago as it is now. But I never really cared that much to be honest.

Probably. My twin brother is as ginger as ginger can be and he's suffered with other people's 'jokes' (ha de fucking ha  ) and insults for having red hair for years.
... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

My little bro has hair that was more red than mine growing up (it was fire engine red, and stood straight up as a baby). As far as I know he was never picked on much for it either.
I used to highlight my hair all the time, and have only recently gotten the last bit of that cut off so I am back to my natural color.
I have to say I get more compliments on my hair now then I ever did when I had more blonde in my hair. Guys seem to dig it too, with the exception of a certain hyper-opinionated aussie here on the board.
Oh, and I live in the US.... It would seem that makes a difference.

Birmingham 500% white?!
Is there a rule that there must be a group segmented from society to be picked on?

Haha!
